SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A man was arrested with the help of a drone in San Luis after being linked to multiple burglaries reported in the city.

The arrest was carried out thanks to a citizen’s call early Wednesday morning, who reported a suspicious person loitering in the lower residential area.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers from the San Luis Police Department located the suspect, who attempted to flee on foot.

A search was immediately called, which included several ground units and the deployment of a police drone, which allowed them to locate and arrest the individual.

During the arrest, the man was found in possession of common tools used in burglaries. Detectives subsequently executed a search warrant at his home, where they found various items, primarily power tools. Some of these have already been identified as stolen property.

Authorities reported that the suspect faces 11 burglary-related charges, including seven felonies, and has been linked to several similar incidents that occurred recently in the city.

The case continues to be under investigation.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – With summer temperatures heating up across the Desert Southwest, local animal experts are urging pet owners to take precautions to protect their pets from the dangers of extreme heat.

Annette Lagunas, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Yuma, says they see the impact firsthand.

“Unfortunately, we get several dogs that come into the shelter that are in distress because of the heat,” Lagunas said. “So anything that we can do to save a few pets is what we’re gonna do.”

Simple steps can go a long way: walking dogs early in the morning or late in the evening, ensuring they have plenty of fresh, cool water, and never leaving them inside a parked car. Lagunas emphasized that even a short walk on hot pavement can be dangerous.

“They are covered in fur. Their temperature is already much higher,” she said. “We typically see a pet around 101 to 102 degrees, that’s their normal temperature, so when it’s hot outside, they can go much higher than that, and it can be detrimental to their health.”

Lagunas and her team recommend always checking pavement temperatures before taking pets outside and creating a cool, shaded space for them to rest during the hottest parts of the day.

As summer continues to heat up, animal advocates hope awareness will help reduce preventable heat-related illnesses and save lives.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A local internet provider is giving back to Yuma schools through a community-driven initiative.

ALLO Fiber presented a $5,000 check to the Yuma Union High School District as part of its “ALLO for Education” program, which allows customers to support local schools when signing up for internet service.

This year, seven schools across Yuma have received funding through the program, helping to ease the strain on resources and support teachers and students alike.

“Being able to give back to the education system. You know, you see the shortage on school supplies, underpaid teachers, administrators…just being able to put a little bit back into that goes a long way,” said Abel Garcia, Public Relations Coordinator for ALLO Fiber.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma community gathered Wednesday night to honor the lives of law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty.

Hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police Yuma Lodge #24, the 48th Annual Peace Officer Memorial Service took place outside the Yuma Police Department (YPD).

The event, held every May 15, brings together families, law enforcement agencies, and community members to remember the 37 officers who have died while serving the citizens of Yuma County.

This year, extra care was taken to prepare the memorial space.

“The city just did a wonderful job cleaning this up, making sure that this event will look good for the level of importance that it is,” said Sgt. Morgan Patterson YPD.

Names on the memorial wall date back more than a century. The earliest recorded line-of-duty death was that of Yuma County Sheriff Cornelius Sage on May 3, 1865. As solemn music played and flags were raised, families of fallen officers stood together in remembrance.

“The plaques that are on this wall are not just there to represent the person,” Patterson said. “They represent the family members, the friends, the colleagues…the members of the community who are also suffering from this loss.”

Organizers say the goal of the annual service is to ensure that every name engraved on the wall is never forgotten.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Arizona Western College honored more than 2,500 graduates Friday night during its 2025 Commencement Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The celebration included students from across Yuma and La Paz counties, representing associate degree programs, occupational certificates, and dual credit high school graduates.

Graduates walked the stage with cheers from friends, family, and faculty. A moment years in the making for many.

“For people who are struggling with their degree, it’s so worth it in the end,” said AWC graduate Nathan Smith.

AWC partnered with Northern Arizona University–Yuma, Arizona State University Local, and University of Arizona–Yuma to host the celebration. Students of all ages and backgrounds participated, many earning multiple degrees and certifications.

“It’s a small college, but I’m used to that. I like a small community,” said graduate Gustavo de los Reyes. “It’s a packed stage, and it’s amazing to see my family here with me and my friends next to me. It’s just glory to God, honestly.”

This year’s Student Commencement Speaker was Alexia Gil, a Kofa High School graduate from Mexicali, Baja California.

AWC officials say graduation is just the beginning.

“Graduation is not the end; it’s the beginning,” said Ana English, Dean of Enrollment Services & Athletics. “On behalf of Student Services, we wish you all the best on your new journey.”

The ceremony streamed live on AWC’s Facebook page, YouTube channel, and local cable.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A man was arrested who was connected to a shooting in the area of Arizona Avenue, according to Yuma Police Department (YPD).

A 33-year-old man was arrested on May 14 and booked into Yuma County Detention Center on a bond of more than $1 million.

He will be in court on Friday, May 16, facing four felonies, including attempted first degree murder.

At about 1:50 a.m. on May 9, officers were called about a man with a gunshot wound in the area of Arizona Avenue near W. 32nd Street.

YPD says officers found a 32-year-old man suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was first taken to Onvida Health then later flown to a Phoenix hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A second person was arrested who was involved in a shooting on Arizona Avenue, according to Yuma Police Department (YPD).

YPD says a 35-year-old man was arrested on Thursday, May 15 and taken into custody without incident.

The second suspect was booked into Yuma County Detention Center along with the previous suspect, a 33-year-old man.

At about 1:50 a.m. on May 9, officers were called about a man with a gunshot wound in the area of Arizona Avenue near W. 32nd Street.

YPD says officers found a 32-year-old man suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was first taken to Onvida Health then later flown to a Phoenix hospital.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Three Harvest Preparatory Academy students received recognition in an international science competition.

Carmen and Mercedes earned the 3rd Place Grand Award in the Material Science category.

Their ECOPADS project stood out from other entries as it addressed environmental sustainability while also tacking women’s health, according to Harvest Prep.

“Getting a Grand Award is incredibly difficult,” said a Mr. Alfed Santos, STEM coordinator at Harvest Preparatory Academy. “But our amazing eagles proved they can soar high on the international stage!”

Another student, Estefany Regalado, was also recognized for her work in Microbiology.

She was able to earn a scholarship from Arizona State University.

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – The Calexico Police Department (CPD) says these past two weeks officers have responded to several attempted robberies in the northside of Calexico. 

“He would pretty much approach houses, knock on the door to see if anyone would answer and at one point, he attempted to gain entry,” said Sgt. Miguel Carbajal with CPD.

Police say the first attempt happened on Cantu Avenue and Sapphire Street.

The suspect tried to open the front door, but was not successful.

The second attempt happened on Jasmine Street and Emil Hashem Street.

“On one of the three incidents that we are investigating, he in fact opened the front door on another one he used what appeared to be several keys to attempt to unlock a front door,” said Sgt. Carbajal.

The final robbery attempt happened on Monday and this time on Mc Millan street near Enrique Camarena Jr High School at around 4:00 a.m.  

“He knocks on the door. He pretty much checks if no one it home, or if anyone is home, he attempted to gain entry into the residents in this situations the residents had…was equipped to a surveillance camera and captured the incident on footage,” said Carbajal.

CPD say they don’t know where the man is from, but he had a Texas I.D.

The suspect was taken to the Imperial County Jail. He is being charged with three counts of attempted residential burglary.
