BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Real estate developer Taylor Brooks announced Monday that its newest tenant, WildRoots Coffee House, is now open and welcoming guests in its beautiful new space in Shevlin Crossing in northwest Bend.

WildRoots’ original northeast Bend location off Empire Avenue has been one of the city’s most beloved coffee shops, and owners Kris and Laura Steinke are excited about opening in a new part of town, the businesses said in a news release that continues below:

The new WildRoots opened last week and is conveniently located at the roundabout at Shevlin Park Road and NW Crossing Dr., on the first floor of Shevlin Crossing, at 2230 NW Labiche Lane in Bend.

HDCM Spotlight Chamber Players and all Educational Outreach programs are sponsored by the Brooks Resources Corporation, the organization said in a news release that continues in full below:

This program provides advanced training and regular chamber music instruction to dedicated young musicians in Central Oregon. Participants work in small ensembles and perform throughout the year at HDCM events and in the community.

“We are excited to welcome this talented group of students and look forward to hearing them perform together this season,” states Executive Director Isabelle Senger. “The Spotlight Chamber Players program has become a cornerstone of our educational outreach, helping to develop musicianship, collaboration, and confidence in young performers.”

Auditions are held annually, and open to students of stringed instruments or pianists with three or more years of private study and intermediate to advanced levels of playing.

This year’s students come from the private teaching studios of Jay Bednorz (Cascade School of Music), Peter Brownlee, Kara Eubanks (Willamette Violin Academy), Lenore Gilbert, and Aria Hartley. The members, aged 11 to 16, attend local schools including High Desert Middle School, Eastmont School, Redmond Proficiency Academy, Cascades Academy, and Summit High School.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The government shutdown’s impact in flight reductions is leaving some air travelers scrambling to get to their destinations, including KTVZ News at Sunrise producer Silas Moreau.

It was the worst weekend for air traffic control staffing since the start of the federal government shutdown. More air traffic control staffing problems were reported this weekend than any other weekend, according to an analysis of Federal Aviation Administration operations plans.

There were nearly 150 staffing triggers. That means air traffic controllers had to alter operations to keep the airspace safe, with fewer people working. These steps can include rerouting planes or delaying flights.

Moreau was in Phoenix this weekend, where he missed his flight because of long security lines.

“I just was in line, and I just felt it in the air,” he said. “I, I was just like, ‘Oh, I can tell these people are angry, these people are sad, they want to get back to their families.'”

Silas’s new flight was set for Monday night, so we’ll see if he makes it back home.

The FAA has prohibited most private aircraft from using a dozen major airports amid the air traffic control staffing problems. Exceptions are being made for military and emergency aircraft. The air traffic control systems command center can also grant exemptions.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — This fall, 65 former active-duty veterans and another 22 students receiving veteran dependent benefits are studying towards undergraduate and graduate degrees at Oregon State University-Cascades. 

In total, more than 321 veterans have received bachelor’s or master’s degrees since OSU-Cascades was founded in 2001. 

Of the student veterans:

18 are women.

The oldest is 46; the youngest is 19.

37 are from Central Oregon; 9 are from elsewhere in Oregon; 18 are from 10 other states.

Of those residing in Central Oregon, 18 are from Bend; 8 are from Redmond; five are from La Pine and three each are from Sisters and Prineville.

Services at OSU-Cascades that support student veterans include a dedicated lounge where students can meet peers and access academic, financial aid and community resources, and a student-led veterans club.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — This weekend’s Fill Your Pantry event was a huge success, organizers say, fueling food access across Central Oregon, with over $37,000 in free food and free food vouchers distributed to local community members.

Through the “Fill All Pantries” campaign, attendees stocked up on enough meat, bread, jam and produce to create 6,677 meals – all at no cost.

Combined with Double-Up-Food Bucks and Protein Perks SNAP match programs, community members were able to head into winter with bags full of fresh, local, and nourishing food grown by regional farmers and crafted by local producers. 

With SNAP benefits reinstated in Oregon just hours before the event, hundreds of shoppers were able to take full advantage of food access programs at Fill Your Pantry. SNAP recipients received up to $100 in  Double Up Food Bucks and up to $20 in Protein Perks matches – helping stretch food dollars.

Amid ongoing economic uncertainty, this event offered a vital chance to stock up on locally produced groceries  ahead of winter. The Bend Farmers Market reported more than 2 1/2 times the usual number of SNAP transactions compared to previous years, underscoring the growing community need for events that make healthy, local food accessible to everyone. 

“The success of Fill Your Pantry reflects the power of community collaboration. Local farmers, food producers, volunteers, partner organizations, and community donors came together to make nutritious, locally grown food accessible for everyone,” Said HDFFA Program Director Ann Pistacchi-Peck.  “We hope the momentum from this event will help strengthen future efforts to connect Central Oregonians with the region’s growers and food businesses, ensuring that healthy, local food remains accessible to all our neighbors.” 

Central Oregon Fill Your Pantry is a bulk buying farmers market designed to help community members stock up on locally produced food for the winter. This year’s event took place on Saturday, November 8th, from 11am-3pm at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, Oregon.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The founder of DAWNS House, a Bend nonprofit that provides housing for women recovering from addiction, has pleaded guilty to five counts of aggravated theft, agreeing to serve 3 ½ years in prison and pay over $400,000 in restitution.

Dawn Holland, 53, was arrested in May of last year and indicted on eight Class B felony counts of first-degree aggravated theft, accused of stealing more than $300,000 from DAWNS House (Directly Assisting Women Newly Sober). She entered a not guilty plea a year ago. 

Holland was accused of stealing the money between 2019, the year she was named the Bend Chamber’s Woman of the year, and 2023.  

A four-day jury trial was scheduled for next March, court records show. Holland’s plea petition was filed on Nov. 3 after a settlement conference that day with Circuit Judge Wells Ashby. 

Along with a 42-month prison term, followed by three years post-prison supervision, Holland agreed to pay $418,665 in restitution to DAWNS House, $100,000 of that before sentencing. 

Judge Ashby has scheduled a one-hour sentencing hearing for next Monday, Nov. 17. 

In the petition Holland signed, she said she was aware she could have faced up to a 10-year prison term and a fine of up to $250,000 if convicted on each of the counts she was pleading guilty to. She admitted stealing $10,000 or more under each of the five counts. 

Defense and prosecution attorneys are recommending she be allowed no contact with DAWNS House or their board members, as well as undergo substance abuse treatment.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Deschutes County is unveiling a Veterans Honor Wall Monday afternoon, celebrating 18 veterans who work for the county’s Health Services Department.

On display throughout November. The wall features a plaque honoring all six U. S. military branches, a U.S. flag and photos of nine women and nine men on the department staff who are veterans.

The Veterans Honor Wall is located in the lobby of the County Health Services Building, 2577 NE Courtney Drive in Bend.

The public is invited to view the display from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Veterans Day, when county offices are closed.

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — A $50,000 gift to Oregon State University–Cascades will establish a fund to enhance classroom learning and hands-on experiences for students in the school’s newly launched accountancy degree program.

The gift was made through the OSU Foundation by Lance Brant, an alumnus of OSU’s College of Business, and the founder and co-managing partner of Capstone Accounting and Tax in Bend, school officials said in Monday’s announcement, which continues in full below:

“This generous gift underscores the important role community and alumni philanthropy can play in readying students for a dynamic workforce,” said Sherm Bloomer, chancellor and dean of OSU-Cascades. “It also advances the vision for a university campus that serves Central Oregon and supports the state’s economic development and workforce needs.”

Launched this fall, in partnership with the OSU College of Business, the accountancy program responds to the growing demand for skilled professionals in Central Oregon, across the state, and nationwide.

Across Oregon, 1,300 jobs are projected to open annually for accountants and auditors through 2032, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Openings for certified public accountants in Oregon are expected to further increase as many current CPAs retire. 

Capstone Accounting and Tax is one of the largest accounting firms in Central Oregon. Brant anticipates that his company will hire up to 40 new accountants over the next five years.

“We are grateful to Lance Brant for his visionary gift to Oregon State University–Cascades and its students,” said Shawn L. Today, record-breaking comedian Matt Rife announced an extension of his highly successful Stay Golden World Tour, with a run of 40+ new dates playing off next year across North America, Europe and the UK. REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The new McDonald’s in Redmond, located at 625 NW Oak Tree Lane, held a grand opening celebration on Veterans Day with free meals for all veterans, active-duty service members and first responders.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., everyone was able to enjoy raffles and giveaways, $1 ice cream cones and $3 Happy Meals.

As part of the opening, the restaurant donated two checks totaling $2,500 to the Central Oregon Veterans Ranch and the Family Access Network.

Plenty of customers filled the restaurant for its grand opening. Mason Rodby, owner of the McDonald’s restaurants in Redmond, Madras and Prineville showed KTVZ News around the new building.

“It’s been an awesome day – really busy day,” Rodby said. “And no school today, so it brings it in. A lot of customers are coming in and enjoying our new lobby and enjoying our new drive-thru. It’s been great! We have a great, great team in there that’s serving our customers and making sure that they get what they ordered.”

This new McDonald’s takes a more modern approach. The restaurant is geared toward drive-thru, take-out and orders through the app.

The lobby has one person who can assist customers, but mainly relies on self-serve kiosks. There’s a new cash machine connected to the kiosks, as well.

The building includes three drive-thru windows, separate pick-up shelves for DoorDash and the McDonalds app, as well as a special late-light window just for Dashers.
