North Idaho Authorities seize over 100 Gallons of Huckleberries in commercial picking crackdown

News Team

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho (KIFI) — Authorities in North Idaho seized over 100 gallons of Huckleberries from a group in Boundary County suspected of commercial harvesting, a practice prohibited within the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. The seizure was the result of a collaborative backcountry patrol aimed at protecting the region’s natural resources.

The operation involved the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), U.S. Border Patrol agents, and Kootenai Tribe of Idaho Law enforcement. According to a BCSO statement, the joint effort focused on “ensuring the safety of recreational users and berry pickers in Boundary County’s wilderness areas.”

Sheriff Travis Stolley emphasized the importance of preserving the area for all: “Our backcountry is something we want to ensure stays a safe place for berry picking and outdoor activities. We are committed to keeping it safe and accessible for everyone. Thanks to our partners and Forest Service grant support, we were able to take decisive action against suspected illegal commercial operations.”

Authorities believe the individuals involved in this seizure are the same group who evaded U.S. Border Patrol agents in a separate incident earlier last week.

Huckleberry Harvesting: Report Suspicious Activity

Boundary County Sheriff’s Office

Commercial harvesting of huckleberries is strictly forbidden within the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. It’s also illegal to damage or remove huckleberry bushes, a common problem associated with commercial gatherers who often use specialized equipment like racks, which can harm the delicate plants.

The BCSO urges anyone in the backcountry who observes suspicious activity related to huckleberry harvesting or other illegal acts to report it to authorities. Your vigilance helps protect North Idaho’s valuable natural resources.

3 dead and several injured in an early-morning shooting outside a Reno casino

CNN Newsource

By Elizabeth Wolfe, John Miller, Sara Smart, CNN

At least three people are dead and several others injured after a gunman opened fire early Monday outside a resort and casino in Reno, Nevada, police said.

Those killed outside Grand Sierra Resort included visitors in town for a bachelor party and a Reno resident driving nearby, according to police in the neighboring city of Sparks.

Reno police shot a suspect, 26-year-old Dakota Hawver, authorities said. Hawver was taken into custody and sent to a hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday, according to Sparks police.

Investigators allege Hawver first shot five people in the valet area, killing two of them – Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33-year-old Southern California residents, Sparks police said. Aguila and Canepa, visiting for a bachelor party, were shot from behind while waiting for a ride to an airport, police said.

The sixth person shot and third person killed, 66-year-old Reno resident Angel Martinez, was driving his car through the casino parking lot when Hawver ambushed him and shot him several times, police said.

Two others who were shot still were hospitalized Tuesday but are expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Investigators have not identified a motive in the shooting, according to police. Hawver does not have a criminal history or any documented issues with mental health, Sparks police said Tuesday. Details about what charges he would face were not immediately released.

A multifaith candlelight vigil honoring the victims will be held Wednesday evening at the Unity Center of Reno, according to the organization’s website.

How the shooting unfolded

The suspect was seen pacing the parking lot of the resort – located less than 3 miles east of downtown Reno – for about 45 minutes before the shooting, a law enforcement official briefed on the incident told CNN.

At some point, the gunman walked into the resort’s valet area and began shooting, Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth told reporters Monday. The shooting was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m., authorities said.

“Once at valet, the suspect produced a handgun and pointed it at a group of victims,” Crawforth said. “The suspect’s firearm malfunctioned. However, he was able to make it operable. Once operable, the suspect fired multiple times at the group of victims at valet.”

Five people were shot in the valet area, one of whom died at the scene, and another of whom was declared dead at a hospital, Sparks police said.

After the gunfire in the valet area, the suspect, who had multiple magazines of ammunition, turned and fled through the parking lot, where a resort security guard confronted him, the police chief said. The suspect shot at the security officer, who returned fire.

As the suspect fled, he shot at a person who was driving through the parking lot, killing that driver, according to Crawforth.

Reno police received a report of the shooting at 7:25 a.m. and were at the scene within about two minutes, according to Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance.

Officers found the suspect in the parking lot, and he began firing at officers, striking a patrol vehicle, Crawforth, the Sparks police chief, said.

Reno police officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect, Crawforth said, without specifying how many officers shot him.

“The bravery and rapid response by our officers stopped the suspect’s rampage on innocent victims, which definitely saved lives and prevented additional people from being victimized,” Nance, the Reno police chief, said.

Because the shooting of the suspect involved Reno officers, Sparks police will take a lead role in the investigation of the whole incident, Nance said.

The six Reno police officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy, Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson told CNN Tuesday.

Nance joined Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and other emergency response officials in offering condolences for the victims’ families.

“Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure, not just for the victims, the first responders and the people who are there, but for everyone who calls our community home,” Nance said. “Violence is not acceptable, especially in our public spaces. Everyone has the right to be safe here.”

There was initially confusion surrounding how many people were injured or possibly killed. Northern Nevada District Health Officer Dr. Chad Kingsley told CNN Monday morning that two people were found dead and three were taken to a hospital. A law enforcement official who had been briefed on the incident told CNN two people were killed and at least two others were injured. Johnson, the Reno police spokesperson, dismissed both tolls as inaccurate.

Guest shaken by ‘unmistakable gunshots’

As the shooting began, resort guest Michael Sisco was about to head outside when he heard “unmistakable gun shots” in “rapid succession,” he told CNN.

“I looked out the window and saw people running,” Sisco said.

He saw one person, who appeared to be shot, stumble and crawl to a nearby car and then lie down on the ground.

After the incident, Sisco heard an announcement over the resort intercom that warned of “an active law enforcement incident outside.” It informed guests, “You are safe inside.”

Guests later received a text from the resort that said, “We currently have a law enforcement situation on property which has been contained. We apologize for any inconvenience as we continue to resolve the situation.”

Photos taken by Sisco show emergency vehicles, including an ambulance, fire truck and police cars, outside the casino following the incident.

The resort entrance was still closed off at 10 a.m. Sisco said, though guests were allowed to leave from a different exit. The entire valet parking area was roped off.

The resort’s leadership is “incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team, whose immediate actions helped prevent further harm,” the resort said in a release. “We also want to thank the Reno Police Department for their rapid assistance and coordination, which was instrumental in quickly eliminating the threat and protecting lives.”

No resort worker was injured, the business said.

Reno City Council member Devon Reese called the incident “yet another act of senseless gun violence.”

“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,” Reese said in a social media post.

Shooting at Reno casino leaves 2 people dead and multiple injured, health official says

CNN Newsource

(CNN) — A shooting at a casino and resort in Reno on Monday left two people dead and at least three others with injuries that required transport to local hospitals, according to Northern Nevada District Health Officer Dr. Chad Kingsley.

Circumstances of the shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort are still unclear, but an adult male suspect has been taken into custody, Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson told the Associated Press.

The suspect was seen pacing the parking lot for about 45 minutes before the shooting, a law enforcement official briefed on the incident told CNN. The suspect initially opened fire, but their gun jammed, the official said. Once he cleared the jam, he resumed shooting.

The suspect was transported to the hospital and is in unknown condition, Kingsley said.

The gunman’s motive is still unknown, and investigators are speaking to the suspect, the law enforcement official said. The victims do not appear to be connected.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. Monday outside the casino in the valet area, Johnson told the Associated Press.

The Reno Police Department warned residents to stay out of the area. Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, were seen outside the casino on Monday.

“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,” Reno City Councilmember Devon Reese said in a social media post.

Idaho Falls-based beef processing plant sold to American Farmers Network

News Team

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — American Farmers Network (AFN) has officially acquired Intermountain Packing LLC (IMP), the Idaho Falls-based beef processing plant.

According to a press release, the move allows AFN to fully integrate and control its supply chain, bringing cattle processing, fabrication, and further processing in-house. Sanin Mirvic, Founder and CEO of AFN, called the acquisition a “game-changer” for the company.

“We can ensure the highest quality standards from the ranch to the consumer’s table. This acquisition of Intermountain Packing not only enhances our operational efficiency but also strengthens our commitment to providing sustainable, highest quality grass-fed beef,” said Mirvic.

Bill Hampton, CEO of Intermountain Packing, echoed Mirvic’s enthusiasm, highlighting the partnership’s potential for expanding the plant’s current capacity. “We are thrilled to join forces with American Farmers Network,” said Hampton. “Together, we are poised to set new standards in the grass-fed beef industry, delivering exceptional products to our consumers while optimizing our operations.”

The acquisition comes after a year of challenges for Intermountain Packing, including a large number of complaints from Idaho Falls residents due to a pungent odor emanating from the plant. In February, former IMP CEO David Adams was charged with creating a public nuisance in connection with the smell. The following month, Bill Hampton assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer at IMP, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Teacher negotiations for Idaho Falls School District #91 continue

Noah Farley

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — The Idaho Falls School Board and School District #91 are negotiating with the Idaho Falls Education Association to reach an agreement on their new budget.

The Education Association is using a federal negotiator to discuss contracts, and D-91 is using their own attorney. The Education Association’s negotiator, Jake Snarr, says they are not happy with how the budget was presented to them this year. Snarr says the budget was presented differently compared to previous years.

“The [School] District’s representative didn’t make a financial proposal, but the District characterizes it as a financial proposal,” Snarr said. “But essentially it was just a number that they put across the table. It was about $35.3 million. They’re saying that they’re okay with anything that we do within that $35.3 million, but it’s up to us to figure out where all that money goes.”

The Education Association has some issues with this budget proposal because it doesn’t seem specific enough, and the budget includes more than just salary.

“The public probably has a concern that the teachers have a contract by the time that the school year starts, not just because that they’re paid, but because the only part of the last contract that rolls forward in the interim is their salary,” Snarr said. “It’s not the terms and conditions of the contract.”

Snarr says he looks forward to working with the School District and thinks this can be figured out before the new school year begins. He says mediation with School District #91 will start again on August 1st.

Local News 8 has reached out to District #91 and we are waiting to hear back from them.

Pocatello skaters celebrate grand opening of Optimist Skatepark on Friday

Sam Ross

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI)– Skaters, city leaders, and supporters gathered to celebrate the grand opening ribbon-cutting of the new Optimist Skatepark on Friday.

The skatepark features stairs, rails, ledges, and a six-foot-deep bowl, as well as a concrete ledge feature in the shape of the State of Idaho. The park was designed by Pillar Design Studios and built by Artisan Skateparks in partnership with the Pocatello Parks and Recreation Department and local skaters who pitched in on construction.

“Skateboarding connects generations, neighborhoods, stories; it gives us a common memory, a shared past that we could build our future on,” said Darin Black, owner of Deckadence Board Shoppe in Pocatello and member of the city’s Parks and Rec Advisory Board. “This skate park is your skate park. This skate park is my skate park. This skate park is our skate park. Let’s honor it.”

Also unveiled at the ribbon-cutting ceremony was a memorial plaque honoring legendary local skater Chevy Nichols, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 17.

At the event, attended by hundreds of people, skaters shared the importance of having a new, designated place to practice their sport in the Portneuf Valley.

“It’s a good euphoric feeling,” said Dillon Jackson, a Pocatello skater who helped lay concrete during the final stages of park construction. “The whole community, and the sea of people we just seen, they all cheering because we got a park, and of course for Chevy, that was really cool, really brought a tear to my eye.”

Optimist Skatepark is located at 972 N 7th Ave in Pocatello.

Time’s ticking, tell ITD what Idaho roads need!

Ariel Jensen

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — The Idaho Transportation Department wants your feedback on what to work on next, but the clock to submit your responses is ticking.

The department has a 30-day open comment period where anyone can comment on the long-term plan for some projects across the state, but it ends Thursday, August 1st, 2025

ITD says they are seeing a lot of great feedback on their Facebook page, but if you want to see actual change, you need to submit your suggestions through the correct channels.

“People care greatly about the roads that affect them the most. Of course, we all care about the ones we have to travel, right? So we get a lot of comments on interstates, get a lot of comments on places with the most congestion or the highest safety concerns, and many of which people will find that those projects are already in our long-term plan. But there are some, of course, that we’re happy to hear when it’s like we didn’t realize we might need to think about that, and people give us good feedback to be able to do that, said Sky Buffat, Public Information Officer, of the Idaho Transportation Department.

Two more life sentences for Doomsday Mom Lori Vallow Daybell

News Team

PHOENIX, Arizona (KIFI)-A judge sentenced Lori Vallow-Daybell to two consecutive terms of life in prison for the murder of her fourth husband Charles Vallow, and the attempted murder of her niece’s former husband, Brandon Boudreaux on Friday.

She is already serving five life sentences in Idaho for the deaths of her children JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan,  and conspiring to kill her current husband’s first wife, Tammy Daybell.

The sentences will run consecutively and will also run concurrently with the Idaho case.

Larry Woodcock, the grandfather of JJ, yelled at Vallow Daybell during a video appearancem, saying “You murdered Charles, the best thing that’s ever happened in your life, for your delusional, narcissistic ways. I will never speak your name again, murderess. You are nothing.”

Prosecuting Attorney Treena Kay dismantled claims that this was a “family tragedy.”

“A family tragedy does not involve the intentional killing of a person,” Kay said. “A family tragedy does not involve working with an accomplice to commit first-degree premeditated murder. And a family tragedy does not involve conspiring with others to kill.”

Lori Vallow-Daybell also spoke before she was sentenced. “So whether I’m giving 5 life sentences or 7 life sentences, I will continue to try to uplift and help and strengthen those around me. It does not matter where you serve on earth as long as you do it with love. It doesn’t matter if I’m given 7 lifetimes or the death penalty like my husband,” said. Lori.

The judge admonished Daybell before handing down the sentences. He told her she left a trail of destruction and “it will take an act of god for you to go free.”
