UCSB students to host “Save Deltopia Town Hall”

Tracy Lehr

ISLA VISTA, Calif. (KEYT) The unsanctioned street party known as Deltopia usually happens along Del Playa Drive in Isla Vista the weekend following Spring Break.

Older Gauchos may remember it as Floatopia, but that got cancelled due to environmental and safety concerns along the shore.

An influx of people from out of town led to a riot in 2014 and since then there has been a crackdown.

Current students don’t want to be blamed for the past and want to discuss solutions.

But many are opposed to a proposed Deltopia noise ordinance.

Members of the Associated Students are hosting a Save Deltopia Townhall at the Isla Vista Theater on Embarcadero Del Norte at 5 p.m.. on Wednesday Nov. 12.

The town hall will have a panel discussion featuring representatives from Associated Students , IV foot Patrol, Isla Vista Community Services District and a representative from Supervisor Laura Capps’ office.

Crackdowns on the noise in the past have led to silent discos, added lighting and an increased law enforcement presence.

E.J. Raad, the elected External Vice President for Local Affairs of Associated Students, hopes students and Isla Vista residents and community members show up.

“What we really need is for constituents to make their voices heard, this ordinance needs to be passed by the [Santa Barbara[ County Board of Supervisors in January, so they need to know how their constituents here in Isla Vista feel about it, since we are the ones being affected,” said Raad, “It would ban music, any amplified noise and that is a little vague, the idea though is music is the number one thing that attracts people.”

Raad would like to see students enjoy Deltopia again with music that isn’t out of control.

“In my opinion, a win win would be this ordinance not being passed and then all the community stakeholders come together creating something on Del Playa that is a key part of Deltopia,” said Raad.

Isla Vista Community Services District Board of Directors President Spencer Brandt said the community could take a page from San Luis Obispo that created a sanctioned event on the Cal Poly campus instead of its “Saint Fratty’s Day” party.

Brandt would like to see a path forward that leads to a permitted event.

“What I would love to see is a permitted and sanctioned festival that is organized, that has artists that people want to see, that helps to alleviate a lot of the neighborhood issues that we experience when there are all these many, many parties happening at once.,” said Brandt.

Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Joe Schmidt who is part of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol calls resources are an issue.

“The proposed ordinance to prohibit amplified music for 72 hours during Deltopia is intended to reduce harm to the Isla Vista, UCSB, and neighboring communities. The out of town crowds have become untenable, and we’ve experienced far too much tragedy to allow this unsanctioned event to continue in its current form. This is a call to action for all community partners to unite and re-frame Deltopia as a local, sanctioned event with all necessary safety measures in place without draining countywide public safety resources. The County of Santa Barbara has been challenged by Deltopia for 16 years at a significant cost to taxpayers. It’s time for change,” said Schmidt.

Schmidt, Brandt and Raad plan to take part in the town hall discussion.

“The Isla Vista Community Services District is the local voice of people in Isla Vista so we are encouraging people to come out to the town hall on the subject of Deltopia this Wed. at 5 p.m make your voice heard I hear a lot of opinions about the right way to make this event safer for our community and now is the time to show up and express those opinions to out local decision makers,” said Brandts.

Students walking by the theater on Tuesday night said they would be attending the town hall.

Santa Maria Honors Heroes At Veterans’ Day Celebrations

Jarrod Zinn

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – Today Santa Maria honored heroes in the armed forces, both active members as well as those who have fallen.

The Freedom Monument outside the Abel Maldonado Youth Center held the 24th Veterans’ Memorial Ceremony since the monument was completed.

“The purpose of the event is to honor all of our men and women who served or are currently serving,” says Robert Tolan, the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Chairman. “But we also want to, you know, relay the message to our military heroes that there’s resources out there for them.”

Students from St. Mary Of The Assumption School read this year’s honoree names during a wreath procession of veterans, their families, and city officials.

“I don’t know. It’s called Happy Veterans Day, but in a way, it’s just Veterans Day,” says Jay A. Conner, founding board member of Honor Flight Central Coast. “You know, one of the things—because it’s happy for the veterans that are alive, but it’s, you know, the veterans that aren’t, it’s not so happy.”

A couple hours later, the 25th annual Veterans Day Free Barbecue took place.

“There’s a lot of world wide events going on and our men and women every day are sacrificing,” says Tolan. “Families are separated. You know, they’re dealing with all the conflicts that are going on around the world. Even if they’re not directly in combat.”

The unique decision that was made for this year was to schedule the two events at separate times so that anyone who wanted to could attend both.

“A veteran wrote a blank check to the people of the United States of America, up to and including their life,” says Conner. “They just served their country and they went there for one reason: to assure the freedoms that we have today. Some of the issues that we have today are granted by the freedoms that the very veterans have given us.”

The community packed into the Santa Maria Veterans Memorial Park on Tunnell Street for food, music, and formal salutes, all to say thank you to those who make the ultimate sacrifices.

Hundreds Attend Veterans Day Ceremonies to Honor Those Who Served

John Palminteri

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – The annual Veterans Day event in Santa Barbara brought hundreds together to honor veterans with music and speeches.

The 11 a.m. event at the Santa Barbara Cemetery was presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1649 and the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation.

It included a UCSB Color Guard Presentation, the Gold Coast Pipe and Drum Band, the Santa Barbara Choral Society, Sons of the American Revolution, singer and former police Sergeant Dave Gonzales and the Prime Time Band.

A special wreath was also presented for each branch of the military.United States Marine Corps Brigadier General Frederick Lopez, said, “this is a great military community throughout. Just to have it on this site, it is special. There are men from the Civil War all the way up to Iraq and Iran so it is a very special place.”

This year featured the song “The Veteran,” by Barry De Vorzon. De Vorzon is an American composer, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He has written special songs for the Unity Shoppe and is featured on the annual holiday telethon. He is also a veteran.

De Vorzon said “I’m one of the fortunate ones that came back and enjoyed a lovely happy life.   There were unfortunately a lot of guys who didn’t.  They either didn’t come back or came back as damaged goods and Ireally wrote this song for those veterans.”

A resident who attends both the Memorial Day and Veterans Day events Ricardo Bimbela, said “they gave their duty for our country and the least we can do is honor them. Their service, we can not ever  forget that.”

Los Patos Way Exit 95 slated to close Spring 2026

Tracy Lehr

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) A freeway exit that is not supposed to be used by trucks and tall vehicles is set to close for good in the new year.

The Santa Barbara Planning Commission gave the Los Patos Exit closure and underpass removal the green light.

Drivers along the 101 may know it better as Exit 95.

They may also know it from photos and videos of high profile vehicles getting stuck.

In June, a big box truck got stuck under the bridge that has a sign that reads 12 ft. 3 in.

The City of Santa Barbara Public Works Operations Manager Adam Hendel said the closure has always been part of the 101 Freeway project that is currently underway.

“The bridge doesn’t meet standards it is only 12 feet 3 inches high and it was built in 1901 so it’s over a century old and we do get large trucks crashing into the bridge, in fact a couple weeks ago a truck got stuck underneath,” said Hendel.

The removal will take place mid 2026.

“So, Spring 2026 at the earliest, and there will be a transition with that but we will close the 101 southbound  in partnership with Caltrans at Los Patos and work will happen behind the closure,” said Hendel.

The rusted railroad bridge will be replaced at a later date.

A temporary shoo-fly track will be installed to allow trains to bypass construction of the replacement bridge.

And the city is also planning new landscaping in the area that could be used for housing down the road.

New plants will be near the Andrée Clark Bird Refuge where people go to see wildlife and bird watch.

Michael Tiffany said he was aware of the plan and doesn’t think people heading south will mind going to another exit to get to the refuge.

“It doesn’t seem to get much use there isn’t a lot of traffic through it I seems to be a hazard I don’t think it will affect access to the refuge we come from the south so we take a different route anyway,” said Tiffany.

Many people are just discovering the area thanks to a new shopping area called The Post Montecito located at 1801 E. Cabrillo Blvd. in Santa Barbara.

It is close to the new roundabout along Cabrillo Blvd. and has stores from Los Angeles and New York including Teller, Spilled Milk, and Save Khaki United.

Rebecca Tanner of Runyon Retail said shoppers can take Cabrillo Blvd. to get to The Post.

“We don’t see there is going to be a problem with it. I think it will be great for businesses to not to have the through traffic coming up the street, especially with new businesses coming,” said Tanner.

The community hub in the center has a number of holiday events coming up this month and next.

We will have more on the upcoming exit 95 closure tonight on the news.

Applications are now being accepted for those as well as the newest cohort, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
