As concert ticket prices increase, more switching to payments plans

Luis Avila

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – With prices for live music soaring, fans are turning to payment plans as a way to afford and pay for their festival tickets.

More than 60% of Coachella attendees this year used the festival’s payment plan, according to Billboard, compared to 18% when the program began at the festival in 2009.

For some, it’s necessary to experience all the music and fun.

“With the plan, yeah. I guess it can be really hard for some people because you are paying a year in advance, like you’re preparing this whole time. It gets really high, especially for camping.”

Joanna, festival-goer

Coachella plans this year required a down payment of at least $50, with the remainder paid monthly. The service requires an additional fee.

While this might be bringing some relief for ticket prices, there are still other costs associated with attending.

“Food is a huge budget, transportation is a big budget.”

Shira, festival-goer

“Like overtly expensive. We spent 22 dollars on two slices of pizza.”

Kassra, festival-goer

Attendees say while you can’t escape the high cost, the best way to avoid additional costs is to plan ahead.

“If you prepare correctly and go about it the right way you can avoid a lot of the extra stuff. All the extra things you need, you can bring with you.”

Riverside County residents invited to give input on county services, budget at workshops

Cynthia White

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KESQ) – The County of Riverside Supervisors and the County Executive Officer have offered a series of community budget workshops this month to inform residents about the county’s services and budget process.

More than 40 county departments provide services ranging from healthcare and housing to law enforcement and public works projects. All these services require funding, whether it’s from locally generated property taxes or from the state and federal government. These workshops will provide a “Budget 101” overview that will go over where the county’s revenue comes from and which public services that money goes towards.

“As Chair of the Board of Supervisors, I am excited we are doing new things this year to increase outreach to community members during the budget process,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “For the first time, we will be bringing these discussions to our communities, in all five Supervisorial districts of Riverside County. We want to hear from you about what is most important in your county government.”

These feedback sessions are open to all residents and will provide an opportunity to give input into county services and priorities ahead of next fiscal year’s recommended budget in May and the annual budget hearings in June.

The workshops have been held throughout the county this month – Supervisor V. Manuel Perez will be hosting the District 4 workshop on Tuesday, April 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Classic Club, 75-200 Classic Club Boulevard in Palm Desert.

County officials say the goals of the community workshops are to make a complicated process more accessible and to ensure that the county’s budget reflects the needs of its growing population. Tim Myers, formerly of One Republic, discusses Congressional campaign in CA-41

Peter Daut

In the fight for the U.S. House, Democrats are hoping rockstar power will help to oust long-serving valley Republican Rep. Ken Calvert.

Tim Myers, a Grammy-nominated former bassist for the band “One Republic,” announced he will challenge Calvert in the 41st District.

At a time when there are fewer competitive House contests nationwide, Democrats consider Calvert’s closely divided district, which stretches from Corona to the Coachella Valley, one of the party’s best opportunities to gain ground in the chamber.

Myers was born and raised in Corona, but News Channel 3’s Peter Daut asked Myers if he still lives in the district.

“You currently live in Corona?” Peter asked Myers.

Myers said, “Corona is so important in this district and Ken Calvert’s over in Washington, he’s completely corrupt.”

Peter responded, “I’m just asking what city do you currently live in?”

Tim answered, “I was born and raised in Corona, and I love this district, I love the people.”

Peter once again asked, “You don’t live in Corona, though?”

“I’m not saying that, I’m just sharing I was born and raised in Corona,” Tim answered.

A spokesperson for the campaign arm of House Republicans issued a statement that Myers is “Everything wrong with today’s radical left: a Hollywood liberal trying to fake his way into Riverside County.”

Ex-indie rock drummer accused of recording child in restroom set for preliminary hearing

City News Service

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – The former drummer of the indie power-pop group the New Pornographers is scheduled to appear in court this week for allegedly possessing child pornography and recording a minor in a public restroom.

Joseph Seiders, 44, of Palm Desert, was arrested April 9 following an investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Along with possession of child pornography, Seiders is charged with intent to invade privacy, attempt to use a concealed camera without consent and annoying/molesting a child under 18-years-old.

Seiders was arraigned April 11 before Superior Court Judge Dean Benjamini, who scheduled a felony settlement conference Tuesday, and a preliminary hearing Thursday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.

He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Milbrant, deputies from the Palm Desert Station received a report of a suspicious circumstance in the 73000 block of Dinah Shore Drive on April 7.

They interviewed an 11-year-old boy who told them a man allegedly recorded him on a cell phone inside the restroom of a Chick-Fil-A.

Two days later, deputies received another report from an employee at a nearby business who said a man was allegedly seen entering and exiting a restroom with several young males, Milbrandt said.

Deputies identified and arrested Seiders at the scene.

A subsequent search of Seiders’ residence turned up evidence tying him to both incidents, along with possession of child pornography, sheriff’s officials said.

Details about the interaction between the suspect and the juvenile males inside the restroom were not disclosed.

Seiders was the drummer of the New Pornographers, fronted by AC Newman and the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Neko Case. He joined the band in 2014.

After the arrest was reported, the New Pornographers issued a statement reading: ”Everyone in the band is absolutely shocked, horrified, and devastated by the news of the charges against Joe Seiders– and we have immediately severed all ties with him. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by his actions.”

Seiders has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
