SHIRLEY, Massachusetts (WCVB) — Police are investigating after human remains were found near a bridge in Shirley, Massachusetts, officials confirmed Wednesday.

A group of young people were walking near the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when they saw something that looked like a body part in the water, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

The group reported the body part to the police, who later confirmed that it was in fact human remains. Neighbors said the group was middle school-aged students.

“There is always activity around here, people walking their dogs. We walk our dog. It’s a pretty safe area,” said neighbor Michelle Maramarco.

Foul play is suspected in the incident, the district attorney’s office said.

There may be traffic delays or detours near the bridge, Shirley Police Chief Sam Santiago said.

“I hope we get some answers soon and that everybody is safe around here,” Maramarco said.

Shirley police, along with Massachusetts State Police and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, are investigating.
