Driver crashes car into family’s backyard, pregnant mother concerned about safety

Marina Garcia

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – A family’s backyard located on South Murray Boulevard and Airport Road, a major traffic corridor, is in ruins after a car smashed through their gate.

KRDO13 spoke to the homeowner, Meleena Pope, who expressed serious concern for her four-year-old and two dogs’ safety.

Pope recalls unwinding for the night when she received a call from her neighbor.

“She said, I don’t want to alarm you. There is a vehicle that drove through your fence and is now in your backyard, and I was confused. And I was like, what?” Says Pope.

That confusion quickly turned to panic as her neighbor’s words registered; Pope remembered that her dogs were playing outside.

“I was hollering for my dogs, trying to put my shoes on,” says Pope. Luckily, her husband had let the dogs in just moments before the crash. “So I closed the back door, and I turned around, and both of my dogs are standing there, and they’re like, staring at me. I almost had an emotional breakdown.”

While the dogs are safe this time, her concern isn’t going anywhere; in fact, it’s only growing.

“With us welcoming a new baby into our family and then also having a young four-year-old, it fills me with even more anxiety. As a parent, my number one job is to protect my kids,” says Pope.

There is a guardrail along Airport Road, but part of it has been damaged, and it doesn’t continue around the other side of Pope’s home. The concerned mother says she’s been in contact with the city, hoping to get that changed.

We reached out Colorado Springs Police Department about the crash to confirm if anyone was hurt and to learn the status of the driver, but as of 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night have not heard back.

Community holds vigil for 17-Year-Old T’Neya “TT” Tovar in Salton City

Timothy Foster

SALTON CITY, Calif. (KESQ) – Dozens of family members, friends, and neighbors gathered Sunday afternoon in Salton City to honor the life of 17-year-old T’Neya “TT” Tovar.

The vigil was held outside the home of 51-year-old Abraham Feinbloom, who has been charged with murder and resisting a peace officer in connection with her death. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 23.

While the case continues to move through the court system, those in attendance said the focus of the afternoon was on remembering T’Neya and celebrating her life.

Loved ones stood together holding candles and photos of T’Neya. Balloons were released into the sky as family members embraced, shared memories, and leaned on one another for support.

According to investigators, human remains were discovered in Salton City in December. T’Neya’s mother said she was initially told the remains were believed to belong to a man. Weeks later, authorities requested a DNA sample, which confirmed the remains were her daughter’s.

T’Neya had been reported missing from a group home in Hemet in June, according to her mother. Friends described her as adventurous and said she often kept in touch with loved ones, even during difficult times.

Court records show Feinbloom previously faced felony kidnapping and false imprisonment charges in Imperial County in 2018. Those charges were dismissed in 2019 after prosecutors said they were unable to proceed.

Family members described T’Neya as bubbly, energetic, and full of personality. They said she loved to dance, sing, and make videos, bringing light and laughter wherever she went.

Her uncle said the loss still feels surreal and that he struggles to understand the motive behind what happened.

Throughout the afternoon, community members stopped by to offer hugs, prayers, and words of encouragement. Family members said the strong turnout was a reminder of how deeply loved T’Neya was and how much support surrounds them during this difficult time.

As candles continued to glow into the evening, her family said they plan to attend upcoming court hearings as they continue seeking justice.

Missouri lawmakers take another shot at a bill that would allow the Secretary of State to rewrite unfair ballot titles

Alison Patton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Missouri Supreme Court Justice knocked down a law last month that would allow the Secretary of State to rewrite unfair ballot summaries, instead of a judge. Lawmakers are taking another go at passing a similar law and making it stick this time.

Rep. John Simmons (R-Washington) introduced House Bill 3146 that would give Secretary of State Denny Hoskins three tries to rewrite ballot language if a judge finds it unfair. It would also increase the word limit from 50 to 100 words and require actions challenging the language to be completed 70 days before election day.

Simmons’ bill is closely modeled after Senate Bill 22, but omits one clause regarding the powers of the Attorney General.

Chief Justice Brent Powell wrote in his opinion that the SB 22 clause was unrelated to the original intent of the bill and declared the whole bill unconstitutional.

The House elections committee voted to pass HB 3146 on Tuesday. It was then referred to the administrative rules committee on Thursday. It is not on the agenda for the next meeting.

The law currently requires a judge to rewrite the ballot language.

For example, Cole County Judge Daniel Green ruled on Friday that language in a ballot summary that would make initiative petitions harder to pass was unconstitutional because it included what some call “ballot candy.”

Because SB 22 was knocked down last month, Green is in charge of rewriting the ballot language instead of sending it back to Hoskins.

Earlier this month, Hoskins admitted to writing biased ballot language for a referendum that would put the 2025 congressional map on the November ballot. In a lawsuit challenging the language. Hoskins’ legal team is asking a Cole County judge to allow the Secretary of State to rewrite the language.

The judge is now considering the state’s request and deliberating on arguments. A judgment hasn’t been issued.
