Deadly Osage County shooting started with argument over affair, court documents say

Matthew Sanders

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

An Osage County shooting that killed a man nearly two weeks ago happened during an argument over an extramarital affair, according to a probable cause statement.

Clayton E. Johnson of Bland was charged Wednesday with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the Feb. 13 shooting that led to the death of 45-year-old Jarrod Compton. Compton was pronounced dead a few days later.

Deputies found Compton shot outside a mobile home on County Road 703, southeast of Linn. He was flown to a hospital in critical condition. A probable cause statement says Compton had been shot in the head.

Compton had been part of an argument over his alleged affair with the Johnson’s “paramour,” the statement says.

Osage County Sheriff Michael Bonham tells ABC 17 News that Compton’s wife wanted to confront Johnson’s girlfriend who Compton was allegedly having his affair with.

“The wife that was coming to confront also was married at one time to the suspect [Johnson],” Bohnam said.

Compton was taunting Johnson to come out of the residence, lifting his shirt to show Johnson that he didn’t have a gun, according to the statement.

Compton slipped going up the steps to the home’s front door and was shot when he got back up, witnesses, including a 13-year-old boy, allegedly told investigators.

“He lost his balance and his knee banged the door and apparently it wasn’t much after that that there was a shot fired,” Bonham said.

The boy also told investigators that Johnson had threatened to “shoot the victim between the eyes,” the statement says.

The boy told investigators that Compton did not try to open the door before being shot, the statement says. Johnson did not act in self-defense because the door to the residence was locked and Compton didn’t try to get inside, according to the statement.

Johnson was arrested at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, according to a release from Osage County Sheriff Michael Bonham.

No hearings have been set. Johnson was in the Osage County Jail on Wednesday on a $150,000 bond.

Wanted man arrested after attempting to run from traffic stop

Curtis Jackson

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 29‑year‑old Ryker Thomas Masson on Tuesday after he attempted to run from a traffic stop near Broadway and Skyline Drive.

Deputies pulled over a vehicle around 4:45 p.m., and Masson, who was riding in the passenger seat, immediately got out and took off on foot. Deputies recognized him and were aware he was wanted on two felony probation‑violation warrants tied to previous drug‑related cases.

Deputies chased Masson through an empty lot and into a nearby alley, where they deployed a Taser while repeatedly ordering him to stop. He eventually complied and was taken into custody. During the chase, officers saw Masson throw several items, including a needle believed to be drug paraphernalia, which were later recovered.

Additional Bonneville County deputies and Idaho Falls Police officers responded to assist. During the chase, a deputy from the initial stop slipped and fell onto a concrete curb, breaking his arm. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Masson was also taken to the hospital for a medical check before being booked into the Bonneville County Jail on his two outstanding felony warrants and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest.

New Amazon facility opens in Desert Hot Springs, could create 2,000 jobs

Daniella Lake

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – Amazon is opening a new 635,000 square foot facility in Desert Hot Springs. Officials say the facility will create more than 2,000 local jobs.

“We have over 10,000 people leave our community every day to work somewhere in retail, medical, hospitality. And so having these jobs local for a working community is huge. They don’t have to travel as far,” says Mayor Scott Matas.

The facility is called an inbound cross dock, meaning employees sort and organize inventory before sending it off to fulfillment centers, which then ship packages to customers.

“From here it will go to 40 of the fulfillment centers for Amazon,” says Bharat Thakre, the site leader for the facility.

Thakre says around 70 trucks will arrive at the facility each day and that Amazon has worked closely with the city to mitigate potential traffic issues.

“The idea is to be a step ahead of it and preempt any of the conditions and concerns that might show up eventually,” says Thakre.

Locals attend retired Sheriff John Phipps’ funeral

Madeline Murray

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Locals across Yuma County are attending the funeral for retired Sheriff John Phipps Wednesday morning.

Phipps passed away last month, leaving behind a wife and two children.

He began his law enforcement career with YCSO back in 1962 when he served as a dispatcher in Parker, Arizona before he was transferred to Wellton, serving as the Resident Deputy, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO).

YCSO also adds Phipps was sworn in as Sheriff in 1981 after running the year before. He retired from his position in 1992, “having served three terms.”

Sheriff Phipps touched so many lives in our community, and is leaving behind his legacy for the community and future law enforcement to carry on.

“These people that are here are just a fraction of the lives that he touched,” says Pat Mistro, friend of Sheriff Phipps, and those who were inspired by him in the community can carry his legacy with them by living like he did.

Christina Barraza, Sheriff Phipps Granddaughter says, “everything that he has done, being kind, keeping the connection amongst all of us here today going, checking in on one another, and just I don’t know, just overall being a great person, I think that that would tribute and honor him in the best way.”

Yuma County Sheriff, Leon Wilmot, shares how he will continue to be remembered by the Yuma County sheriffs office.

“That’s why he did what he did, was too improve the quality of life of the people that he served and that’s the same mantra that we all live by in yuma county,” says Sheriff Wilmot.

Family, friends, and community members gathered to honor Sheriff John R. Phipps who passed away last month.

“Unfortunately he has passed on, so we are honoring his life and legacy,” says Sheriff Wilmot.

He served in many roles including dispatcher and jailer, until finally becoming deputy sheriff in 1981.

Wilmot explains, “he was actually honored in congress for his legacy and leadership, he filled a lot of different stuff in the community too.”

He is remembered by those who loved him as a father, husband, grandfather, mentor, and friend.

“I’m very honored and appreciative that he was my grandfather, he touched so many lives, and so many hearts, he wore so many hats in the community, and as a person, and I’m just in awe that he was my grandfather,” says Barraza.

Sheriff Phipps dedication, commitment, and sacrifice will forever be remembered by the Yuma community.
