Riverside County announces first measles case of 2026

Jesus Reyes

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KESQ) – A Western Riverside County child has tested positive for measles, county health officials announced Monday. It’s the first confirmed case of measles in Riverside County for 2026.

The child, who was not vaccinated for measles, is recovering at home. There is no recent history of international or out-of-state travel, according to Riverside University Health System — Public Health (RUHS – PH).

Confirmed measles cases have been reported throughout Southern California in recent weeks, including Orange, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles counties. According to the California Department of Public Health, nine cases of measles have been confirmed in recent weeks in California.

“As we see growing reports of measles from our neighboring counties, the risk of measles is no longer remote. It’s now also impacting us here in our own county, even among those with no recent international or out-of-state travel. The importance of timely vaccination is clear,” said Riverside County Public Health Officer Dr. Jennifer Chevinsky.

County health officials said for standard measles protection for children, one dose of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine should be given at 12 months of age and another at 4 to 6 years.

Prior to international travel, vaccination with one dose of MMR vaccine is recommended as an early dose for infants as young as 6 months old, to reduce the risk of contracting measles during travel.

For older children, adolescents and most adults without documented doses of MMR vaccine, two doses separated by at least 28 days should be given to provide protection, especially before travel to areas with known measles transmission.  Two doses of MMR vaccine are 97% effective against measles. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine series provides the best protection against disease and serious illness.

“Measles is highly infectious and can be spread through the air when a person breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes, so it is very important to call your healthcare provider if you may have been exposed and especially at the first sign of measles illness,” said Dr. Chevinsky.

Signs of measles are typically observed 10 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. A prominent rash is the most visible symptom but can also include a fever that lasts a couple of days, followed by a runny nose, cough, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). The earliest symptoms usually last four to seven days. More severe symptoms can include pneumonia and brain swelling, which can lead to death from complications.

The rash will usually appear first on the face, along the hairline and behind the ears. It then spreads to the rest of the body. Those infected can spread measles about four days before their rash starts to four days afterward.

Given the risk of rapid disease spread, early identification of illness and staying home while sick are vital. This helps protect children under 6 months of age who are too young to be vaccinated, pregnant women who are at risk for severe disease, as well as those who have immunocompromising conditions.

To get vaccinated, talk to your healthcare provider or visit one of Public Health’s upcoming vaccine clinics. All clinics accept walk-in appointments. Cost and eligibility vary. For questions and clinic locations, please call (951) 358-7125 or visit www.ruhealth.org/vaccineclinics

Nathan Pare no longer employed as St. Joseph director of planning and community development

Cameron Montemayor

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — City officials confirmed a key department director at City Hall is no longer employed after being hired last July.

Planning and Community Development Director Nathan Pare is no longer employed with the City of St. Joseph, a city spokesperson confirmed to News-Press NOW on Monday.

The city said it is now evaluating its next steps in wake of the move.

It’s unclear if the move was a voluntary decision or if it was initiated by the City. Pare was hired last July to lead the department after the City parted ways with longtime director Clint Thompson, who had previously served as director from 2001 to 2025.

Plans Review Coordinator Dale Reuter has been tapped as interim Planning and Community Development director following the change.

Pare came out of retirement to take the director’s position in St. Joseph in late July 2025 after a near 30-year career working in Kansas City, including experience as a division manager and experience working in code enforcement, demolition and property management.

The Planning and Community Development Department is the lead agency for both physical and economic development of the City of St. Joseph, with staff reviewing all residential and commercial development plans, zoning and subdivision platting and long range planning for the city.

Man who previously escaped from Osage County Jail sentenced to probation

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man who escaped from the Osage County Jail in October 2023 has been sentenced to probation.

Alex Stieffermann pleaded guilty on Feb. 4 in multiple cases to several crimes, including escaping confinement, second-degree assault, stealing a vehicle, first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle and causing damage to jail property. He was sentenced to probation along with a 15-year suspended sentence, court filings show.

Court documents in previous reporting say Stieffermann had ran away from the jail after he assaulted a jail officer and took his keys.

Stieffermann allegedly hit an officer “multiple times” and took his facility keys. Stieffermann made it to a kitchen area and hit another officer with a fire extinguisher, according to the statement. The officer was brought to an emergency room after suffering from a head injury, the statement says.

Stiefferman then escaped from the jail using the facility keys, but was later found in Linn, documents say.

Prineville police take man into custody after social media threats prompt Crook County schools alert, increased patrols

Barney Lerten

(Update: Adding video, more details from Crook County School District)

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) — Prineville police took a man into custody Monday morning following reports of threats circulating on social media that mentioned a specific officer and Crook County High School, officials said.

Police were first alerted to the “non-specific” threats around 7:30 a.m., Lt. Thomas Vollmer said in a news release.

“Although there was no indication of an immediate threat, the report was treated with seriousness, and officers responded with appropriate caution,” Vollmer explained.

The incident concluded without injury or an ongoing danger to the public, the lieutenant added.

Around 8:30 a.m., a message was sent to Crook County School District staff and families. saying police told them a social media threat was “directed toward a specific Prineville Police officer and Crook County High School.”

As a result, the CCSD Communications Team said, police were increasing patrols at the high school and all schools in the district.

“Schools will remain in session today with increased security measures,” they said, adding that “families who feel more comfortable may choose to pick up their student early or keep them home.”

“The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority,” the school district said.

Vollmer said the man linked to the social media posts was already known to local law enforcement and “has a documented history of behavioral health-related concerns.”

Officers located the citizen near NE Crest Drive around 9:30 a.m., and he was taken into custody without incident.

“At this time, there is no continuing threat to students, staff, or the community,” Vollmer said.

An update the school district out shortly before 10 a.m. said they’d learned from law enforcement that “the suspect has been taken into custody, and there is no longer a threat” to the high school.

Vollmer said, “We want to extend our sincere thanks to the Crook County Sheriff’s Office and the Crook County School District for their partnership, professionalism and dedication throughout this situation.”
