UCSB can’t hold early lead and lose 8-6 at #20 Southern Mississippi

Mike Klan

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi.(KEYT) -The bats were never going to stay quiet for long in Southern Mississippi, as the UC Santa Barbara and No. 20 Southern Miss Baseball teams combined for four homers and 14 total runs in the second game of their three-game series. Despite taking an early lead thanks to Noah Karliner’s continued clutch hitting and Nick Husovsky’s first yard call in Blue and Gold, the Gauchos ultimately fell to the hosting Golden Eagles, 8-6, setting up a showdown for the series win in Sunday’s finale.

HOW IT HAPPENEDThe first two innings of the game looked nearly identical to the first two innings of Friday’s contest, with the pitchers in control. Nathan Aceves, making his first weekend start for the Gauchos, kicked off his day with a kick change for a strikeout and set the Southern Miss side down in order in the first. He opened the second with another K and stranded runners at the corners to end the frame before the bats burst into life in the third.

The top of the Santa Barbara order played some small ball to load the bags, with Rowan Kelly walking, Cade Goldstein legging out an infield bunt single and Husovsky getting plunked. Jonathan Mendez’s comebacker bounced off the pitcher’s glove and to the second baseman for an out, though it drove in the first run of the game. Then, it was Xavier Esquer with the first big hit of the day, splitting the game in left center for a a two-RBI double. He would come around to score on Karliner’s two-out RBI single, another run-scoring hit with two outs for the Cal State Dominguez Hills transfer; he has three two-out hits on the season already.

The Golden Eagles got two runs back in their half of the third with a hit batter, two singles and an errant throw, but Santa Barbara restored their four-run cushion immediately in the fourth. Goldstein’s two-out single passed the torch to Husovsky, who wrapped his first Gaucho home run just inside the left field foul pole to make it 6-2.

Southern Miss hit a homer of their own in the bottom of the fourth, a solo shot to make it 6-3, before both pitchers managed to restore order and put up zeroes in the fifth. Aceves worked into the sixth, retiring the first batter of the inning before he was removed, though his reliever allowed a single and a two-run homer as the Golden Eagles brought Santa Barbara’s lead down to one. The lead was gone thanks to three straight singles to start the seventh, with AJ Krodel having to wriggle out of a second-and-third, one-out jam to escape with the game tied. He got some help from a great defensive play by Mendez at short, making a strong home to cut down the lead runner for the second out. There was no escape in the eighth though, as a two-run homer provided the decisive runs for the hosts.

UP NEXTWith the series now tied at one game apiece, the winner of Sunday’s game will get to claim the bragging rights. Dos Pueblos High School alum Kellan Montgomery will get the start for Santa Barbara in the rubber match, taking on McCarty English. With rain expected overnight and into the morning, first pitch is now set for 1 p.m. Pacific Time from Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with a free, audio-only stream and live stats available at ucsbgauchos.com.

Columbia Police rule early Saturday morning shooting an accident

Alison Patton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Police say an early morning shooting on Saturday that left one person hurt was accidental.

Police Department responded to a shots-fired call at Classic Buildings on North Providence Road around 4 a.m. Saturday

CPD spokesperson Colin Imhoff told an ABC 17 News reporter that a person was found hurt and was taken to a local hospital. He later said that after a CPD investigation, it was ruled an accident.

ABC 17 News has requested the incident report.

Classic Building’s Sales Manager James Melies told an ABC 17 News reporter that a police officer called him around 4:50 a.m., asking for any related surveillance video from the property. Melies said he provided officers footage from the business, but did not share the video with ABC 17 News.

Classic Buildings is near the Welcome Inn hotel and an Eagle Stop gas station.

Melies said that this type of crime is not one he sees normally around Classic Buildings.

“I do know that there has been a lot of shootings lately [in] Columbia and Jeff City,” Melies said. “As far as this area, our location, this is the first that I’ve seen.”

This is the eighth shooting in Columbia for 2026.

Central Oregon’s WinterFest brings community together for winter fun

Spencer Sacks

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Residents from across the Northwest gathered in Central Oregon this weekend for Bend WinterFest 2026. Despite a lack of significant snowfall, attendees enjoyed a wide range of festivities including food, crafts and live entertainment.

The event drew visitors from as far as Idaho and Portland to celebrate the season in Bend. Activities included a dog show featuring frisbee-catching pups, while various local vendors showcased their products and services to a community eager for winter-themed engagement.

Vendors at the festival reported positive interactions with the crowds throughout the weekend. Sarah Wellman, owner of Well Created, noted that people attending the event seemed genuinely interested in the local businesses.

“We’ve been having a great time. All the other vendors and people have been amazing,” Wellman said. “People are just so kind and generous and, really, genuinely interested in what we’re here to. To sell and bring.”

Other business owners emphasized the social aspect of the gathering. Nataliya, owner of Crepe Oh! Holics, described the event as a festival that unites the community.

“Winterfest is really very cool,” Nataliya said. “Festival, this unites people, community. So we just enjoy to be here.”

The festival grounds featured unique amenities such as fires and saunas to complement the winter theme.

Avalon Disko, co-owner of Zap Trip Mobile Tattoos, highlighted the specific atmosphere of the event. “I like the area we’re at,” Disko said. “We have all these fires and dogs and saunas. So. Yeah, it’s been fun.”

While the spirit of the event remained high, many participants noted the unusually low snow levels for February. Silas Baker, a resident of Bend, said he wished for more snow but still found the celebration exciting. Lincoln, co-creator of Sasquatch, described the lack of snow as “kind of bad” and expressed his hope for its return.

“I really, I hope for snow to be here,” Lincoln said.

The absence of snow raised concerns for some about the upcoming summer months. Bend resident Lacey mentioned that while the weather remains cold, the lack of snow could lead to more wildfires.

Tracey Barnett, co-owner of Crazy About Crystals, pointed out the inherent unpredictability of the region’s weather. “It’s cold, but there’s no source for it, right? We’re in central Oregon. You never know if you’re going to have snow by 5 feet or 5 inches,” Barnett said.

Participants and organizers at the festival said they are still hoping for fresh snowfall to arrive soon.
