HOWARD COUNTY, Maryland (WJZ) — An international manhunt is underway for a man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and leaving her body inside his apartment in Columbia, Howard County, before fleeing to India, according to police.

Howard County police on Sunday issued an arrest warrant for 26-year-old Arjun Sharma on first and second-degree murder charges in the apparent stabbing death of 27-year-old Nikitha Godishala, of Ellicott City.

According to police, Sharma said Friday that he last saw Godishala on New Year’s Eve at his apartment in the 10100 block of Twin Rivers Road.

Later that day, police said they found out Sharma had left the country on a flight to India. A search warrant was then executed at his apartment, where officers said they found his ex-girlfriend’s body with stab wounds.

Detectives believe Sharma killed Godishala shortly after 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Police and federal law enforcement are still working to find and arrest Sharma. A motive is not currently known and the investigation is ongoing.

Police said the suspect, Sharma, called 911 to report his ex-girlfriend missing on Friday. They then believe he headed to Dulles International Airport and boarded a plane bound for India.

Sharma will be charged with first- and second-degree murder.

“There was obviously some premeditation to be able to do this and then to flee the country, so that’s what we have right now as far as charges,” Howard County police spokesman Seth Hoffman told WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren.

Hoffman said officers carried out a search warrant at the suspect’s apartment in the 10100 block of Twin Rivers Road.

The building is adjacent to the Mall in Columbia.

Inside the apartment, they found the body of Godishala, of Ellicott City, with multiple stab wounds and other trauma, Hoffman said.

He was unsure whether the police were able to recover the murder weapon.

Hoffman said there were no calls to service or other prior complaints at the apartment.

“We are unaware of any previous calls for service or incidents involving the two of them,” Hoffman said. “We do believe it wasn’t uncommon that they would still meet each other and have communication after their relationship ended, but we don’t have a motive right now as to why he would kill her.”

Godishala’s friends grew increasingly concerned when they stopped hearing from her on New Year’s Eve. Some took to social media to ask if anyone knew her whereabouts. Police said she stopped contacting loved ones shortly after 7 p.m. on December 31.

“Her friends have already filed a police report, but we need more eyes on the ground. If you live in or around the Columbia area, please keep a lookout. If you have any information, no matter how small,” one post read.

“We received information from friends and family that really raised some red flags. It really propelled the investigation towards the instance of foul play being involved,” Hoffman said.

Godishala appeared to have posted in August in a Facebook group looking for someone to take over her room in the apartment and described her ex as “respectful” and clean.

Neighbors are stunned, including Daniel Wheeler Jr., who told WJZ Investigates he saw police cars outside the building.

“I feel deeply sorry for the family,” Wheeler said. “Guilty doesn’t rest oftentimes, and whatever he’s going through he will ultimately have to face.”

Murders in area surrounding the Mall in Columbia are rare.

“The biggest thing you’ll see over here is people fighting over parking spots. I like it like that myself,” Wheeler said. “It’s a very close-knit community. People are very friendly.

Wheeler said he hopes the neighborhood can recover.

“I hope us as a community we can come together and keep looking out for each other and show some love toward the beginning of this new year,” he told Hellgren.

Howard County Police said they are working with federal and international authorities to capture Sharma.

“The U.S. Attorney’s office works with Interpol, which is an international organization, and they will eventually issue what is known as a ‘red notice’—basically an international arrest warrant,” Hoffman said. “From there, that goes out to all the countries that work with Interpol, which is close to 200 countries including India, so that will give Indian authorities information. They will begin to track him and hopefully arrest him. From there, it could take quite a bit of time to process and hopefully get him extradited.”

India’s embassy posted about the case on X, formerly Twitter.

“The Embassy is in contact with the family of Ms. Nikitha Godishala and is extending all possible consular assistance,” officials wrote. “The Embassy is also following up the matter with the local authorities.”

Stunning “Wolf Moon” lights up Central Oregon skies

Tracee Tuesday

CENTRAL OREGON (KTVZ) — Central Oregon residents were treated to a breathtaking sight Saturday night as the year’s first full moon — known as the Wolf Moon — illuminated the High Desert skies from Bend to La Pine to Prineville.

Viewers across the region shared incredible photos of the glowing supermoon as it climbed above the horizon, casting a bright, silvery light across the landscape.

This particular full moon qualified as a supermoon, appearing about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a typical full moon because it was closer to Earth in its orbit. It officially peaked around 2 a.m., but its dramatic rise at dusk drew widespread attention — and plenty of cameras.

Thank you to everyone who captured and shared your images of the Wolf Moon with us.

Three shot on Clark Lane Sunday night

Nia Hinson

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Three people were shot on Clark Lane at the Greens apartment complex on Sunday night, according to Columbia Police Chief Jill Schlude.

According to Schlude, police received reports of a shooting in the 4800 block of Clark lane shortly after 9 p.m. Police found three people who had been shot on scene. Their injuries are considered to be life-threatening, Schlude said. Police detained one person on scene and said they do not believe there is an outstanding threat to the public.

Schlude could not confirm if the shooting happened in the parking lot or in an apartment.

A social media post from CPD said that there were three reported victims. Injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening, the post said. Additional information about what happened was not immediately available.

“Officers arrived on the scene very quickly, so did the Boone County Sheriff’s Department they located three victims,” Schlude said. “Those three victims have life-threatening injuries, everybody was transported as trauma patients to the hospital with gunshot wounds.”

The Ashland Police Department, University of Missouri Police Department, Hallsville Police Department and Boone County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.

“Obviously, when we have large-scale incidents like this, there’s a lot of information coming in that 911 is trying to sort through, so we initially were told there were more than three victims,” Schlude said. “Once we realized the victim count was lower than what was initially reported, they went back to their jurisdictions.”

An ABC 17 News reporter on scene saw several CPD vehicles near the Links apartment complex around 9:30 Sunday night. The reporter also saw officers searching a wooded area near the complex.

ABC 17 News is working to learn more information.

Columbia on-street parking rates increase to $1 starting Monday

Alison Patton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

All on-street parking rates in Downtown Columbia are increasing to $1 per hour, a $0.40 increase, starting Monday, according to a city press release. This ensures all parking rates match the campus area south of Elm Street.

According to the release, the city intentionally selected Monday to reprogram and update pricing labels on the meters and install new signage with updated rates because fewer people will be downtown.

This is the first rate adjustment since 2013, according to the release. The additional parking revenue will be used to maintain and improve parking infrastructure.

Columbia resident Amanda Werlein said she already avoids downtown because of traffic, and she doesn’t think Columbia should charge for parking.

“I think it would help the community more to have more freely available parking. It would be nice if parking wasn’t paid at all,” Werlein said.

Werlein also said an extra $0.40 isn’t a big deal.

“It is a reasonable enough choice to increase the parking to a dollar; it’s not that much of a change,” Werlein said. “It shouldn’t be something that is there to begin with.”

Also starting on Monday, cashless users who pay the meter on the ParkMobile App won’t have a fee associated with their transaction, according to the release. About 54% of people pay for parking through the app.

Man injured after being entrapped in a chemical mixer

Dillon Fuhrman

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Rural Metro Fire says a man was injured after being entrapped in a chemical mixer Sunday.

According to a post on Facebook, it happened at Gowan Milling, located in the area of E. County Eighth Street, at around 8:20 a.m.

Rural Metro says a “coordinated response involving fire, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and hazardous materials teams were initiated” due to the nature of the facility, which “handles regulated materials.”

This prompted the Yuma Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team/Technical Response Team and Onvida Health personnel to respond to the area.

Upon arrival, Rural Metro says, “Crews established incident command, secured the area, and implemented safety protocols to protect both responders and facility personnel.”

They also said they isolated power to affected areas, conducted air monitoring and took precautionary measures in order to address potential exposure concerns, and said, “technical rescue resources were utilized to assist with a complex extrication.”

Rural Metro says the man was treated on scene, and was then taken to the hospital for further treatment, and says, “The incident was contained within the facility.”

The investigation is ongoing.
