NODAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — A 22-year-old Nebraska man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries after his vehicle left the highway and crashed into a home in Burlington Junction early Saturday morning.

The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after a 2018 Chevy Silverado traveling west on U.S. Highway 136 in Burlington Junction failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway into a yard near Smith Street, striking a tree before traveling west and then crashing into a home.

The vehicle came to rest partially inside of the home facing west, according to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. No one inside the home was reportedly injured.

MSHP could not confirm if weather conditions played a factor in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old man from Gretna, Nebraska, was transported by Nodaway County EMS to Clarinda Medical Center in Iowa with serious injuries.

The Nodaway County Sheriff’s Department and the Burlington Junction Fire & Rescue provided assistance on the scene.

Air Force Academy suspends head men’s basketball coach Joe Scott indefinitely

Bradley Davis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – The Air Force Academy announced in a press release its suspension of head men’s basketball coach Joe Scott indefinitely while the school investigates his treatment of his cadet athletes.

The military academy said assistant coach Jon Jordan will serve as interim head coach. The team is canceling all media availability during today’s home game against Nevada. The press release did not elaborate on the type of treatment Scott is accused of.

Scott said in a statement that he is cooperating in the investigation.

“In response to today’s action, I will fully cooperate with the investigation and look forward to a proper resolution of this matter. I will not have any further comment until the matter is resolved,” Scott said.

Scott led the Falcons to one of their most successful seasons in program history during his first stint as head coach from 2001 to 2004, winning the school’s first Mountain West title and first NCAA tournament appearance in 42 years.

Scott has not found the same success in his second go-around as head coach at the Academy. The Falcons have not had a winning season since he took over in 2020. The team is 3-14 headed into Saturday’s game with Nevada.

Cesar Chavez Boulevard expansion to begin in San Luis, Arizona

Abraham Retana

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA) – A busy street in San Luis, Arizona is getting a facelift to be ready when the expansion of the new port of entry is completed.

Cesar Chavez Boulevard is one of the main streets in San Luis, Arizona.

It runs from east to west.

This much needed project will allow more traffic to travel faster to and from the downtown area.

“Cesar Chavez Boulevard is a collector’s street and it’s only two lanes. It’s going from two to four and truly is going to be able to move the traffic in a more efficient manner,” said City of San Luis, Arizona Mayor Nieves Riedel.

The price tag of the construction is more than $60 million.

Mayor Riedel asks the community to be patient and use alternate routes when the construction begins.

“It is going to cause problems with the traffic. My thing is I would like to ask everybody to be patient with us, it’s a good thing this is a sign that we are growing and this is progress,” said Riedel.

The construction is set to start in March and will be completed in two years.

COMMERCE CITY, Colorado (KCNC) — A woman is dead after the driver of a car she was in allegedly smashed into a parked RV, fled the scene, changed vehicles, and then tried to bring her to the hospital. That’s according to Commerce City police and Colorado State Patrol.

The initial crash with the car and the RV happened overnight, late Friday or early Saturday, in the 7200 block of Interstate 270. The driver, who officials have not yet identified, then drove home with his passenger, a woman who suffered “grave injuries,” according to Commerce City police, and switched vehicles.

The man was then pulled over for speeding near East 74th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard while driving the woman to the hospital, he told a state trooper.

The trooper saw the injured woman in the car and got paramedics to the vehicle, but they were unable to save her, police said.

The man was arrested and now faces charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death. Officers later went to the man’s home to find the car they say was involved in the initial crash.

A handout photo from Commerce City police shows a damaged car that investigators say was involved in a deadly hit-and-run. The driver allegedly took his injured passenger home in this car, switched vehicles, and then tried to drive her to the hospital, where she died en route.

The woman will be identified at a later time by the Adams County Coroner.

A Commerce City police spokesperson believes the two were boyfriend and girlfriend.

A spokesperson for Colorado State Patrol didn’t immediately respond to a request for more information.

Donations pour in to help after restaurant employee with work visa is detained by ICE

CIRCLE PINES, Minnesota (WCCO) — What started as an average night for Pancho’s Taqueria and Mexican Cafe in Circle Pines, Minnesota, turned into a traumatic memory.

Frank Chase, who owns the restaurant, says he can’t stop thinking about Tuesday, when federal agents arrested one of the restaurant’s employees, who Chase says had a valid work visa to live legally in the U.S.

The agents waited in the parking lot before following a Latino staff member named Kevin into a storage container as he grabbed supplies for the kitchen.

“We can’t hear anything that happened in there but I am sure that he was terrified,” said Chase.

What he could hear was the struggle between Kevin and the agents, as the father of two cried out.

“He was saying ‘help, help, help me,” said Chase.

Within minutes, Kevin was arrested and taken to the Whipple building in Minneapolis. By the next morning, he was on a flight to El Paso, Texas.

“It feels like there’s just no due process,” said Chase. “Why do we have to send him there?”

Chase’s family hired a lawyer and set up a GoFundMe to cover upcoming legal fees, instantly hitting their $25,000 goal. Donations were often coming from customers eager to help the cause.

“We’ve been here what, at least once or twice a week ever since they’ve opened,” said customer Sean Berry. “We’ve got some little money set aside for something I was holding, I said, I can go without a couple things for a minute to help out my peoples.”

Management at the restaurant is confident they’ll get Kevin home. But they know there are others like him detained with proper paperwork who don’t have the same support system, whether it be money, lawyers or just people willing to help.

“It’s just hard to go to sleep at night when you think we weren’t able to keep him safe,” said Chase.

Donations for the GoFundMe were paused after hitting their goal. Chase says he now plans to sponsor Kevin to help ensure his release.

SoCal man shares videos of car crashes outside his home, hoping it spurs change

ORANGE COUNTY, California (KCAL, KCBS) — An Orange County man has been posting social media videos of car crashes in front of his house to hopefully spur safety changes at his Huntington Beach intersection.

“We just hear horns, pretty much every day, if not every second,” resident Craig McCoy said. “When that’s not happening, I’ll get a message on Facebook.”

McCoy’s home faces the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Taylor Drive. Two years ago, he said he put up cameras that have captured several frightening collisions, including one in 2024 where a motorcyclist died. His cameras have captured a collision as recently as Monday, when a pickup truck collided into the side of a car pulling out of the dealership near McCoy.

“There’s two blind left turns,” McCoy said. “One, you can just make a left turn between the Ford and Chevy dealership. Then there’s also one into the neighborhood, which is where I live. When you go to make a left turn or a U-turn, you can’t really see oncoming traffic if there’s somebody going the other way.”

McCoy said he wants something done to make the area safer.

“Ultimately, people need to drive safer, but also if there is something we can do to prevent this, which I believe there is, that’s what I want to have done,” McCoy said.

The Huntington Beach Police Department said over the last three years, there have been 11 collisions in the intersection that have caused injuries or death. Caltrans, which has jurisdiction over Beach Boulevard, conducted a 2024 study that found all crashes were caused by drivers breaking the law. The offenses range from speeding, failure to yield and following to closely.
