More Missouri law enforcement agencies have joined ICE immigration partnership since April 2025

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) — Missouri law enforcement agencies continue to expand their participation in a federal immigration enforcement partnership more than nine months after the state first moved to align itself with President Donald Trump’s directive to broaden cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A 1996 federal law allows U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to give state and local law enforcement limited authority to carry out immigration enforcement under ICE supervision, under an additional provision known as Section 287(g).

ICE operates three models that law enforcement agencies can sign up to take part in: Jail Enforcement Model, Task Force Model and Warrant Service Officer Program. Agencies may participate in more than one model.

Under the Task Force Model, participating officers may identify individuals they believe are not U.S. citizens during routine policing, share information with ICE and, in some cases, carry out immigration-related arrests or serve administrative warrants, but only under ICE supervision.

Under the Jail Enforcement Model, jail staff, not patrol deputies, are trained to identify and process inmates who are in custody on local or state charges and may be subject to removal.

The Warrant Service Officer program allows ICE to train, certify and authorize state and local law enforcement officers to serve and execute administrative warrants on aliens in their agency’s jail.

As of Jan. 16, 2026, there are 39 law enforcement agencies across Missouri that have signed 287(g) agreements with ICE, according to federal records. Those agreements include 28 Task Force Model partnerships, seven Warrant Service Officer agreements and four Jail Enforcement Model agreements. Three additional agencies outside mid-Missouri have agreements pending.

In Mid-Missouri, several agencies have joined the program over the past year:

Missouri State Highway Patrol, Task Force Model, signed March 21, 2025

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, Task Force Model, signed July 29, 2025

Phelps County Sheriff’s Office, Task Force Model, signed Oct. 17, 2025

Pettis County Sheriff’s Office, Jail Enforcement Model, signed Aug. 28, 2025

Callaway County Sheriff’s Office, Jail Enforcement Model, signed Dec. 2, 2025

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, which operates statewide, has taken one of the most expansive roles under the program. Patrol officials said 53 troopers and officers are now certified under 287(g).

From Sept. 26, 2025-January 2026, MSHP officers obtained ICE detainers on approximately 36 people, according to the agency. Patrol officials said the detainers resulted from officers’ normal enforcement duties rather than targeted immigration operations.

Federal agencies are not required to notify state or local authorities when operating within their jurisdictions, the patrol noted.

County sheriffs have emphasized that participation does not mean conducting immigration sweeps.

Callaway County Sheriff’s Office officials said the department enrolled in the program late last year, but is currently limited to the Jail Enforcement Model and remains in a holding pattern because of delays tied to a federal government shutdown in late 2025.

“At this time, there’s nothing going on except we are in basically a holding pattern as I have not heard from Immigration and Customs Enforcement since November 2025,” the Callaway County Sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Callaway County Sheriff’s Office officials said their goal is to eventually send a small number of jail employees to ICE training so they can access federal systems to verify immigration status. The sheriff’s office also said it will not actively seek out people who are in the country illegally, but would assist ICE or other federal agencies if requested, “in whatever capacity allowed by law.”

Missouri’s growing participation follows executive orders signed in January 2025 by both President Donald Trump and Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe, encouraging closer coordination with federal immigration authorities.

Nationwide, ICE reports 1,317 Memorandums of Agreements 287(g) agreements across 40 states.

Nationwide, ICE reports 1,317 active 287(g) memorandums of agreement across 40 states. Those agreements include 147 Jail Enforcement Model partnerships in 31 states, 448 Warrant Service Officer agreements in 35 states, and 722 Task Force Model agreements spanning 34 states.

Drivers walk away unharmed after fiery Monday morning semi-truck crash along I-15

Curtis Jackson

UPDATE:

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — Two drivers walked away uninjured after a fiery early morning crash between two semi-trucks forced the closure of I-15 north of Idaho Falls. According to the Idaho Transportation Department, the flames from the ensuing diesel fire were enough to melt portions of the asphalt. A timeline for repairs has not yet been determined.

The Idaho State Police says the two-vehicle crash took place around 5:49 AM, near milepost 125 along southbound I-15. A 55-year-old man from Alberta, Canada, was driving south in a 2024 white Volvo semi-truck. Just ahead, a 25-year-old man from Monteview, Idaho, was traveling southbound in a white Kenworth semi-truck.

ISP says the Volvo rear-ended the Kenworth at milepost 125, where both semis came to a stop. As a result of the crash, the Volvo blocked both southbound lanes as the cab of the semi-truck caught fire.

Idaho Falls Firefighters rushed to the crash, extinguishing the fire; However, a portion of the roadway was damaged after diesel fuel from the trucks melted the asphalt.

Both southbound lanes were closed for around four hours as ITD and ISP investigated and worked to clear the scene. The left lane has since been reopened, while the right lane remains closed as crews work to clear the wreckage.

Fortunately, ISP says both drivers were wearing their seat belts and were not injured in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Total deer hunted in Missouri up nearly 10% from last year

NPG Content Share

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) — The 2025-26 deer-hunting season ended on Jan. 15 and the preliminary total of deer harvested is up nearly 10% from last year, according to a Friday press release from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

MDC reports that 301,954 deer were harvested throughout the state this hunting season, compared to 275,656 during the 2024-25 season.

Previous reporting shows that last year’s numbers were down because the firearms seasons during the 2024-25 season was a week later and there was a plentiful bumper acorn crop, which affects deer migration.

“As expected, deer harvest rebounded nicely from the lower harvest total we had last year, especially across much of southern Missouri,” MDC Cervid Program Supervisor Jason Isabelle said in Friday’s press release.

The total number is still down from the 2023-24 season, when 326,448 deer were harvested.

For this season, the release says, 145,222 of the harvested deer were antlered bucks, while 25,129 were button bucks and 131,603 were does. Top harvest counties were Franklin (6,770), Howell (5,490) and Callaway (5,346), the release says.

Buchanan County saw a total of 869 harvested deer, Andrew County saw a total of 1,063, DeKalb County saw a total of 1,097 and Clinton County saw 1,018.

The event started at the MLK Jr. Sports Pavilion, located at 770 Park Avenue in El Centro, at 11:30 a.m. Pacific, and is to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In addition, there was a reenactment of the “I Have a Dream” speech in front of the Imperial County Courthouse, located 939 W. Main Street, at 12:00 p.m. Pacific.

Many who walked say Dr. King’s message still resonates today.

“I think he would just be reinforcing unity and togetherness. You know, just remembering that we’re all human and we all have things that we go through, but that doesn’t separate us or make us different,” said Tahjah Fortune, who participated in the walk.

More changes on 8th Street project in Colorado Springs start on Monday

Scott Harrison

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Colder temperatures and the federal Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday aren’t keeping crews from making progress in the ongoing improvement project on 8th Street.

Until now, it has generally affected northbound 8th Street, on the bridge over Fountain Creek, and the eastbound US 24 Frontage Road to Cimarron Street.

But drivers are about to see impacts on southbound 8th Street.

There have been recent traffic backups on northbound 8th Street across the Fountain Creek bridge due to an occasional right lane closure.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, and lasting four weeks, that lane will remain closed.

The closure enables crews to rebuild sidewalks, driveways, and other street features.

Here’s some good news, though.

After that work is completed, we’ll finally see the new dedicated right turn lane open, from the bridge to the US 24 Frontage Road.

Both lanes of that road have been closed since just before Christmas, with one lane briefly reopening for the holidays.

As for the street impacts hinted at, south of the bridge, expect to see brief lane closures all the way to Motor City Drive.

That will allow workers to find utility lines under 8th Street.

Then, that work will switch to the northbound side.

We’re told it’ll take a few days to finish all of it.

Similar work will occur north of the bulk of the project, as crews locate utility lines at the intersection of 8th & Cucharras streets.

All of the coming changes are to prepare for the next major phase of this project — replacing a water main under the affected stretch of 8th Street.

Officials emphasize that access to adjacent businesses will remain open, and drivers are asked to avoid blocking driveways to businesses.

90-year-old man parasails off Fort Myers Beach to celebrate birthday

By Hunter Walterman

FORT MYERS BEACH, Florida (WFTX) — Ten years ago Dr. Amy Hilde-Philips made a promise to one of her patients. It was kind of an unusual request, but something she took seriously.

“People ask me, like, what is making you go?” Hilde-Philips told FOX 4 on Saturday. “And I’m like, I made a promise to a very special man.”

On Saturday, Philips went parasailing with 90-year-old Arnold Lokken on Fort Myers Beach to celebrate his birthday. This has become something of a tradition for Lokken, who everybody calls ‘Sonny,’

The U.S. Navy veteran first went parasailing with his granddaughter in Hawaii more than ten years ago. Then they did it again for his 80th birthday in Clearwater.

“At my age, if they’re still alive, they’re sittin’ in a La-Z-Boy rockin. What fun is that?” Sonny told FOX 4. “They need to get out here and get up in the air.”

The 90-year-old has a zest for life, Hilde-Philips said, that keeps him young at heart. Despite vision challenges, Sonny still drives a four-wheeler almost everyday.

“He has a positive attitude and he takes care of himself,” Hilde-Philips said. “That make a huge difference.”

Sonny returned the compliment, calling Hilde-Philips a “top-of-the line” doctor who has consistently cared for him the last 20 years.

Sonny last went parasailing ten years ago. His granddaughter suggested they do it again at 90.

Of course, Sonny said yes. But on one condition.

“He looked at me and said, if you get me to 90, you’re coming with me,” Hilde-Philips said.

And on Saturday, she kept her word. Sonny’s family arranged for Hilde-Philips to travel with them from Minnesota to Southwest Florida.

Sonny trekked into the Gulf on Saturday with Hilde-Philips and his granddaughter, Kaylee. Paradise Parasail whisked them away on a boat before launching them high above the water. FOX 4 tagged along for the trip and mic’d up Sonny as he cut through the bright blue sky.

“If these things fail, we don’t want to land on a shark,” Sonny said in the air.

Luckily, it was smooth sailing as the crew eventually reeled the trio back onto the boat. Sonny returned them to a heroes welcome on Fort Myers Beach. His family clapped and took photos as curious people stopped by and asked what happened.

“We’ve been talking about it, and thinking about it and planning it, and it was just fun that it got to happen,” Kaylee said. “Just super cool to celebrate this milestone for him.”

Sonny only had one complaint. He wished they were up in the air for a little longer.

“To go sailing with Kaylee and Amy, what could be better than that?” Sonny said. “There is nothing any better than that.”
