DADE CITY, Florida (WFTS) — Residents living behind the Dade City Gun Club said ricochet bullets are landing on their property, raising safety concerns for children playing in their yards.

Steven Hobbs, who owns property on Hobbs Road directly behind the gun range, said bullets have been a constant problem during the nearly 60 years he has lived there.

“You don’t mistake the sound of a ricocheting bullet,” Hobbs said.

A viewer contacted our newsroom with concerns about the gun range, writing in part: “I have a 2-year-old that plays out in the yard, I am fearful for her of getting hit by a stray bullet.”

Hobbs said bullets regularly ricochet and hit trees and property in the area. About 30 years ago, he said one killed his horse.

“My mom had the horse fenced off from the garden, she was down there picking peas, and she come up and say son, something is wrong with your horse, so I went down there and sure enough, he was dead,” Hobbs said.

Last week, Hobbs said he and his son-in-law witnessed another close call.

“We were standing right over there where my brother’s camper is, me and my son-in-law, and, they were shooting and we heard it hit the tree limb and then it fell right down on our feet,” Hobbs said. “I mean it wouldn’t have hurt you because they hit the limb first and then come down but it was like there on the ground between me and him.”

Hobbs said he has called the sheriff’s office multiple times to investigate, but nothing has been done.

“Pretty frustrating, but you know you live here all your life, you just kind of get used to it,” Hobbs said.

The safety concerns are particularly worrying for families with children. Hobbs said he has to keep his grandkids from going in the backyard.

“I got one of my grandson [who] is autistic. He likes to be out in the yard all the time, but you don’t want to let him in the back, so we try to keep him in the front,” Hobbs said. “It gets aggravating.”

Pasco County officials said the last complaint code compliance received about the Dade City Gun Club was in October of last year, about a noise ordinance violation.

Statement from Pasco County Sheriff’s Office:

“The last complaint we received was for a noise complaint in 2024. Pasco Sheriff’s Office takes all reports very seriously and investigates all complaints we are made aware of.”

Strangers help after trailer full of sled dogs turns over on icy Minnesota highway

By John Lauritsen

Minnesota (WCCO) — It was a scary moment in the Twin Cities over the weekend, as a trailer hauling sled dogs turned over on Interstate 494 in Minnetonka.

It happened around 10 a.m. Saturday. Luckily, the dogs survived.

The huskies are part of Silent Run Adventures, a Monticello dog sledding team.

“The back end came loose on me, corrected, corrected, pretty soon the trailer was moving,” said Jack Christopher.

Jack Christopher and his wife Kris had nine of their dogs in a trailer and were driving to an event in Excelsior when they hit a slick patch on I-494. As he tried to regain control, his trailer basically split in half on the freeway.

“The next thing I knew I looked at my side view mirror and I could see plywood and it was the bottom of my trailer,” he said. “Mostly I was worried about the dogs.”

Though they were scared, eight of the dogs were unharmed. But a husky named Hoss got loose.

It was a worst-case scenario, but Kris Christopher eventually caught up with Hoss while a state trooper, Minnetonka police and fire and other drivers kept them out of more danger. One by one, and in different vehicles, the huskies were taken to a veterinarian in Excelsior. A dog named Rebel even got a ride in the back of a squad car.

All of the dogs involved in the accident appear to be okay. But they’ll have to be monitored throughout the week to make sure they don’t have internal bleeding.

The trailer is totaled, but it likely won’t be long before the huskies are back to doing what they do best.

“It all happened so quick. But the outpouring of support from everywhere has been wonderful. The dogs are okay, that’s what’s most important,” said Kris Christopher.

Jack Christopher credits the safety boxes in the trailer for keeping the dogs from serious injury.

They are in the process of getting a new dog trailer.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help them pay for the new trailer and veterinary expenses, as a result of the accident.

Missouri senator renews effort to remove statute of limitations in childhood sexual abuse cases

By Krista Tatschl

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMBC) — “We live in Missouri where survivors of childhood sexual abuse were silenced.”

Sen. Brad Hudson isn’t opposed to a second swing at bat. His comes in the form of legislation – and it’s a swing for the fences.

“This is so important, so vital and we didn’t want it to slip through the cracks,” Hudson says from his desk in Jefferson City, Missouri, at the Capitol.

On Monday, Dec. 1, he refiled a bill with the Missouri Senate seeking to eliminate the statute of limitations on bringing civil suits in instances of childhood sexual abuse.

He filed it last session, too, but it stalled in a Senate committee.

“This is a marathon, not a sprint,” Hudson says.

Current Missouri law allows abuse survivors to sue their abusers up to the age of 31. Many survivors don’t come forward with their abuse until their 50s, or they wait until their abuser has died.

He says, “If we don’t do something … Missouri becomes a sanctuary state for pedophiles.”

Hundreds of other bills were filed Monday as well, and survivors of childhood sexual abuse are concerned Hudson’s bill will be buried in the stack.

“This is to help the neighbor kids down the street. This is to help the kids you go to church with or just all those in society that don’t get a chance to have their voice heard or are unable to find a positive way to move forward,” says John Hobbs.

As a child, Hobbs was abused by his Boy Scout leader for years, and last March, testified on behalf of Hudson’s bill to try to push it out of committee and put it to a vote on the Senate floor. He is ready to testify again if that’s what it would take to have success with Hudson’s bill.

“Oh, absolutely. We’ll do that again. That is difficult, though. You know, obviously, emotionally draining,” Hobbs says.

A woman who was sexually abused at the International House of Prayer–Kansas City, who goes by her first name, Gracia, also testified in March, telling her heartbreaking story of repeated abuse by ministry leadership and staff.

“These voices matter,” she says. “We will keep coming back until this is passed. We will keep coming back until Missouri’s law protects children instead of predators.”

Hobbs and Gracia both state they, and many other survivors, are willing to testify publicly and tell their stories multiple times to the Missouri Senate in order to allow future children who may experience sexual abuse to seek justice and possible restitution.

Hobbs says, “It’s all for them. This is for them. Making sure that they have the ability to come forward and tell their story whenever they’re ready, no matter what. And they’ll be believed, and they’ll get to have a fair chance in the legal system in the state of Missouri.”

Mom and daughter donate handmade plushies to patients

By Matteo Iadonisi

ALLENTOWN, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Rachael Mahoney spends her free time hand-crocheting stuffed animals for hospital patients.

Mahoney is the Vice President of Hospital Operations and Strategic Alignment at Lehigh Valley Health Network, which is part of Jefferson Health.

She picked up crocheting as an after-work hobby. Soon enough, she had amassed a collection of plushes that needed a home.

So, she decided to make a donation to Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital in Allentown.

It became a recurring tradition for Mahoney and her daughter, Palmer, who had her own experience staying overnight at a hospital several years ago.

Mahoney typically drops off the plushes to be distributed by the Child Life team. But recently, she had a chance to visit a few children and make a donation in person.

While this is not a service Mahoney advertises for the general public, she hopes to continue using her free time and talents to make future stuffed animal donations to the hospital.

Teenager shot while inside Boone County home

Jazsmin Halliburton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A south Boone County neighborhood is still shaken after a 15-year-old was taken to a local hospital after they were shot in the face early Tuesday morning.

The Boone County Sheriff’s office said in a release that Joint Communications received a call about a juvenile being shot in the face at 12:04 a.m. on Tuesday in the 800 block of North Parkview Court.

The release states the juvenile was conscious and transported to the hospital. They are believed to be stable, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators said they believe someone was shooting from outside the home.

“Based on the initial investigation, it is believed the juvenile was inside the residence when multiple rounds were fired into the residence from outside.”

ABC 17 News spoke with five neighbors in the area who all said that large scenes like Tuesday morning were uncommon for the area.

“It sounded like gunfire,” neighbor Steven Schatzer said. “We saw the whole thing, with the first responders coming in and followed by more police presence than I’ve ever seen out here in 46 years.”

One neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of retribution ran into the home following initial shots to help provide medical care.

“It was hard scene to look at, I don’t want to see that for anybody, our neighbors or youth or, you know, whatever, this neighborhood, we wouldn’t expect it,” the neighbor said.

Several neighbors also shared that up until the past few months, the area was relatively quiet.

“This neighborhood has steadily had its problems, and it seems like for the last five years alone, we’ve had a lot of intervention from the sheriff and the police and the Highway Patrol and DEA,” Schatzer said. “It looks like the migration of the problem has come from the city to the suburbs.”

An ABC 17 News reporter on scene saw four Boone County Sheriff’s vehicles and one deputy walking around a house in the 800 block of Parkview Court with a flashlight and another inside the home, just after 1 a.m.

No suspects are in custody.

Artist Jonathan Applegate innovated his own unique form of art

By Libby Smith

DENVER (KCNC) — In 2016, artist Jonathan Applegate with his partner Kim Johnson started Future Drawn, LLC. They decided to focus their new art business on Jonathan’s oneLINE art.

“What’s unique about my oneLINE style is that from start to finish, I never let the line cross or intersect and I always do it by hand,” Applegate explained.

Applegate creates detailed pictures using pen and paper or paint brush on canvas. From start to end, the picture is one single line.

“I can hold the composition in my mind, kind of like a picture plain, but I’m only solving the problem as I go. The trick is to not back myself into a corner and to look just far enough a head that I know what I’m working on,” he explained.

Applegate has been developing this style of drawing for nearly 10-years.

“It started as a challenge to never pick the pen up off the page,” he said.

He started doing small drawings with the pen never leaving the paper, but as the size and scope of his pictures got bigger he had to do them in sections.

“I can actually start anywhere,” Applegate said. “Most of the time I never know where the end is going to be.”

Applegate has been able to scale up his oneLINE art to mural size and has also collaborated with other artists to create some stunning pieces.

Jonathan Applegate and Kim Johnson have a gallery in the Tennyson Arts District at 4420 Tennyson Street.

WSHINGTON COUNTY, Pennsylvania (KDKA) — The driver of a FedEx truck crashed into a creek in Washington County on Monday.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. in Canton Township, just feet away from a home. The driver fell off a private driveway and into a creek about 12 feet down.

The homeowner jumped into his tractor and helped rescue the driver, who sustained minor injuries.

“I unloaded it, got him to get into the bucket, put the bucket into the creek where he could do it. We got him in safely, backed out, put him down,” said Sean, the homeowner.

Surveillance video shows the driver pulling up to the home. He is seen backing up, but the camera didn’t catch the driver leaving.

“He said he took it too wide,” Sean said.

A towing company came and lifted the FedEx truck out of the creek. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection responded to the scene because there was some fuel in the water.

In a statement, a spokesperson for FedEx said, in part, “Safety is of the utmost importance to FedEX, and we are grateful there were no major injuries due to this incident. We extend our appreciation to the first responders who arrived to assist the driver involved.”

Family pleads for dog to be returned after it was stolen from home

By Alicia Roberts

PHILADELPHIA (KYW) — A family is pleading for the safe return of their beloved Yorkshire Terrier after it was taken early Saturday morning outside their home in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. The 3-year-old dog has a special meaning following the tragic loss of their mother.

Lakeshia Lockhart says her 14-year-old niece stepped outside their Strawberry Mansion home along the 3200 block of West Norris Street to walk their black Yorkie when a man with a large dog suddenly approached.

Lockhart said their Yorkie wasn’t on a leash when her niece ran inside to get her help, leaving the dog, who was gone by the time they both made their way back out front.

“She got frightened and ran to come get me,” Lockhart said. “But by the time I came back out, it was already too late. He was already gone down the street.”

Lockhart said she believes the dog was stolen, something that’s especially difficult for this family.

Lockhart is the sister of Ashley Lockhart, the 32-year-old mother of six who was murdered in 2022 by her boyfriend and the father of her six young daughters. The dog was given to the girls following their mother’s death for emotional support.

“It’s their family. It’s their brother, their support system,” she said.

According to police, the man who took the dog was in his 40s, with black hair tied in a ponytail, wearing a green jacket and brown boots. For Lockhart, she’s just asking whoever did this to return the dog and do the right thing.

“Stuff happens,” she said. “Situations happen. I understand. But can you just bring the dog back? It means so much to them if they can have them back during the holiday.”
