Local friends turn creative vision into new Downtown coffee spot

Prajukta Ghosh

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KQTV)– A coffee shop, which started as a lunch conversation between two friends, is set to open in Downtown St. Joseph on Feb. 14.

Co-owner Elizabeth Generaux said the plan came together during one of her regular lunch conversations with her friend and the other co-owner, Maggie Johnson.

After reaching out to several locations, the pair ended up setting up their first shop, Moony’s Coffee, at Savannah High School.

Both Generaux and Johnson will open their new location at 510 Edmond St. in Downtown St. Joseph.

Generaux said they’ve always been involved in community-based activities, like doing henna tattoos and wanted to try something new, which ultimately led them to coffee.

“We knew this location was in our budget and we think it’s really charming and like the way it looks. We haven’t really explored the community Downtown and we like the neighborhood, so we wanted to build a vibe here,” Generaux said.

Connecting with the community was another major reason for the pair to open up the new shop. Generaux said they’re excited to meet people, have conversations and learn more about the lives of those who stop by.

However, getting everything ready hasn’t been without challenges. Generaux mentioned that finding people to help set up has been difficult due to scheduling conflicts, but they’ve received a lot of support from friends and family.

“We are definitely going to need more help when we open up. We had people reach out to interview for barista, but we may have to see what it looks like when we officially open up,” Generaux added.

For Johnson, being part of this new venture felt like a natural fit. She said both she and Generaux are creative people, and this café gives them an outlet to express creativity while connecting with the community.

Johnson admitted she wasn’t always a big coffee fan, but working in the shop has changed her mind.

“I just always thought that coffee didn’t taste that good, but I enjoy the process of testing out the new flavors, and we will make a lot of teas and chai here too for those who don’t like coffee,” Johnson said.

She hopes the shop will become a welcoming space where people can relax, enjoy music and support other local small businesses.

The duo plans to experiment with unique recipes and encourage customers to try something new.

“We make our own syrups, so we get to make the recipes and everything else homemade for our lattes and coffees. We want to do a lot of cereal milk lattes that people don’t normally do,” Johnson said.

Both Genereux and Johnson are excited to open their doors and create a space where everyone feels welcome — a place that can brighten someone’s day, one cup at a time.

Rainy weather expected to bring added challenges for law enforcement during New Year’s holiday

Dave Alley

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – Rainy weather during the New Year’s holiday may provide extra challenges for local law enforcement agencies during what is already one of their busiest times of the year.

“Not only are we dealing with a holiday, but we also have rain in the mix,” said California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Maria Barriga. “We have enough to work with with just the New Year’s celebrations that are going to be going on tonight and with putting rain into the mix of it, it’s not a good combination.”

To help keep roadways as safe as possible, the CHP is beginning its maximum enforcement period early in the evening on New Year’s Eve.

“Maximum enforcement is when we have the most amount of officers working patrol,” said Barriga. “It starts at six tonight and it will end tomorrow at midnight. We will be patrolling up and down the freeways, to make sure that they’re clearing any vehicles that might be disabled or crashes that are on the roadway or blocking the roadway, and also to deter people from speeding and doing things that they’re not supposed to when they’re driving.”

Fatal overdoses decline by 35% in Buchanan County in 2025, fewest since 2019

Cameron Montemayor

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — Buchanan County recorded a 35% decline in fatal drug overdoses in 2025, the fewest cases going back to 2019 according to county data.

Data provided by the Buchanan County Medical Examiner’s Office shows 20 fatal overdoses were confirmed in 2025. The number marks a 35% decrease from 2024 when 31 fatal overdoses were reported, although cases remain elevated compared to pre-2017 data.

The latest figure also marks the fewest overdose deaths recorded in a year since 2019, when 15 occurred in Buchanan County.

This table shows the number of fatal overdoses each year in Buchanan County going back to 2016, according to data from the Buchanan County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Statewide, data from the CDC indicates Missouri has experienced a 29% decline in fatal overdoses compared to last year, when 1,450 people died as a result of a drug overdose

Synthetic opioids such as fentanyl continue to make up a large majority of cases statewide and in Buchanan County.

Local authorities began to see a rise in fentanyl and synthetic-opioid-related cases before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, with cases skyrocketing in the years following from 2020 to 2022. The number of fatal overdoses nearly tripled from 15 in 2019 to 42 in 2022.

Cases have gradually declined in the time since, lowering to 28 in 2023 and 20 by 2025, but remain elevated compared to pre-2017 figures. The growing use of Narcan has also played a critical role in fewer overdose deaths.

Since 2016, a total of 221 people in Buchanan County have died of a drug-related overdose.

Solvang’s Copenhagen Countdown Rings In 2026 On Denmark Time

Jarrod Zinn

SOLVANG, Calif. (KEYT) – The city of Solvang rang in the new year this afternoon with the second annual Copenhagen Countdown.

It’s already 2026 in Denmark, so with its rich Danish heritage as part of Julefest, the city of Solvang rings in the new year on their time, which is 3:00pm here in California.

“The afternoon part of it is because we wanted to have an event that was with our, you know, Denmark, Copenhagen, but also for families,” says Candice Libera, City Of Solvang’s Marketing And Events coordinator. “So they can come out and have this event with their kids, do this, but then still have the night time to go do whatever other event they’d like to do in the valley.”

Locals say the days of Christmas Eve and Christmas saw visitor traffic this year that was still surprisingly high despite the rain.

“This year, because of the weather, I think in the rains it was really, you know, pushed into the weekend specifically,” says Annalan Cucki, co-owner and winemaker at Final Girl Wines.

Business owners say what the storms really did was shift all the visitor traffic to an overwhelming December 27th, when the weather cleared up.

“This is a super small operation and my husband basically runs this place and we have one employee,” says Cucki. “And on Saturday he the one employee had the day off, it was Peter by himself. And that guy happened to walk by and decided he needed to come in and kind of help.”

Organizers say the second annual Copenhagen countdown has had a show-must-go-on approach, whether it’s raining or not. Complete with a live performance from local band sensation the Molly Ringwald Project.

“It seems like the weather’s cleared up just enough for this to happen,” says The Molly Ringwald Project’s Ian Musgrove. “And you know what? It’s probably raining and snowing in Europe right now anyway, so I think the weather is perfect,” says the band’s lead vocalist Roxanne Morgenstern. “Feels very authentic,” says Musgrove.

The traditional closure of Julefest, the annual Christmas Tree Burn, is tentatively scheduled for the evening of January 9th, weather permitting.

Rain or Shine – Wet New Year’s Eve Party Plans Go On

John Palminteri

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – A winter storm is not going to drown out New Year’s Even plans on the Central Coast, but there may be some adjustments.

Several locations have put in weeks of planning, creative sessions, special orders for food, drinks and decorations and the shows will go on.

That includes live music, DJ sets and festivities at both 9 p.m. for the East Coast-style celebrations in California and midnight for the West Coast celebrations in real time.

At the Harbor Restaurant on Stearns Wharf they are planning a multi-tiered evening with different pricing for those who want to enjoy dinner and the full celebration and those who want to just come together for beverages and the grand finale.

There, they plan to have a special “ball drop” to be a smaller scale version of what is famous in Times Square in New York.

Activities will be inside and out on the seating area with sweeping views of the harbor and waterfront.

Harbor Restaurant Owner John Thyne said, “The Harbor restaurant is one of the most iconic places in Santa Barbara. We’ve had people coming through these doors since 1941, for special occasions. So tonight should be no different. “

“We’ve hired Spark Creative to build a big rig and a big ball filled with lights, and it’s gonna come down at midnight, and everybody will do the countdown and welcome 2026.”

There are different pricing options for those who want dinner and the ball drop or just the upstairs festivities and the front row look at the ball. “Yeah, we have lots of options. We have a seven course dinner that we’re serving. Or you can just show up at 9 p.m.. pay $50. and come in for the big party with the deejay.” Also hats, horns and noise makers.

Forecasters have advised those who are out to be ready for a steady rain all evening, in the overnight and through tomorrow afternoon.

The Santa Barbara Public Market is planning “Ball Drop” festivities and a Trivia Night game session. Everything will be indoors. They will focus on a 9 p.m. event in line with the East Coast showing of Times Square and the ball drop there. “We’ll have the ball drop on the big (100-inch) TV. Just something early for people who don’t necessarily want to stay out in the rain till midnight,” said Manager Natalie Ramos. “We just feel so grateful that they’re happy to come with their friends or family, their kids, their dogs.”

She said the restaurants plan to be open and that will offer a variety of choices.

“We just want this to be the place where everyone is invited,” said Ramos.

For those looking to laugh the year away, two shows may help you chuckle the year away.

Luis Moro is hosting a Comedy Speakeasy event at 409 State Street featuring Craig Shoemaker, who has many TV appearances with his humor.

The SB Comedy Hideaway hosts Andrey Belikov and Maximilian Robert Lockwood have booked the New Vic Theatre for two shows featuring Darren Carter “the Party Starter” as part of a lineup of five comedians in the 300 seat theatre.

Several downtown locations will be celebrating with various events, including a balloon drop at the Red Piano piano bar and nearby on State Street with a live band, Tequila Mockingbird, at M-Special brewing with no cover charge.

The Santa Barbara Symphony has an annual show that is expected to draw a full house at the Granada Theatre. This year the music will be Broadway and Hollywood themes. It begins at 8:30 p.m.

SOHO has the Doublewide Kings with a Psychedelic Bash that comes with dinner at 7:45 p.m. or just the show at 9 p.m.

The Palace Restaurant went with its popular Cajun-Mardi Gras theme and featured a duo of Michael Gutin on the accordion and Barry Birmingham on the drums with sing-a-long songs. Customers can also join in with some hand instruments and play the washboard.

UCSB Student Dies Following a Fall from Campus Residence Hall, Family Confirms

The death of UC Santa Barbara freshman Elizabeth Hamel broke hearts amongst students and community members when news broke the 18-year-old had died of injuries sustained after a fall from an on-campus residence hall in February.

On the night of February 14th, Hamel was found unconscious outside San Rafael Hall following what seemed to be a night out with friends. Elizabeth was pronounced dead on February 20th. With little transparency from the university, questions arose around the young girl’s death – How did Elizabeth gain access to a building she didn’t live in? And who is the young man she was last seen with?

Just recently, UC Police officially ruled Hamel’s death as an “accidental fall.” However, the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to Your News Channel that “the case is under review.”

Her father Alain describes her as “talented, beautiful, glamorous, intelligent, and funny — all of those things.” She was incredibly kind, and “cared so deeply about her friends, always thinking about how to make them happy, how to help them, and how to show up for them.” Click here to read more.

The body of San Fernando Valley teen, Oscar Omar Hernandez, was discovered in Oxnard in April just a few days after his family had reported him missing. 13-year-old Hernandez never returned home after visiting his soccer coach Mario Edgardo Garcia-Aquino at his Lancaster home.

That coach was charged with murder with special circumstances in the death of missing teenager, along with additional, unrelated felony charges for the sexual assaults of two separate minors he also coached in years prior. Three teens are Dead and Two Others Suffer Major Injuries After Four-Vehicle Collision on Highway 1

The community tragically lost three Dos Pueblos High School students in a four-vehicle collision on Highway 1 north of Gaviota back in May – 18-year-old Jake Curtis of Goleta, 17-year-old Michael Ochsner and 15-year-old Alexander Wood both of Santa Barbara.

On May 18, at 6:00 p.m., multiple calls were received about a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 1 near Rancho San Julian. A preliminary investigation has determined that a southbound 2007 Toyota Yaris entered the northbound lane and struck a 2024 Tesla Model 3 head-on. The head-on collision caused the Tesla to crash into a southbound 2012 Audi Q5 and a southbound 2002 Honda Accord.

Jake Curtis was a varsity swimmer, and swam all four years at Dos Pueblos. Michael Ochsner was a junior varsity cross country and track athlete – he was described as a good teammate and well liked by his teammates. Alexander Wood was a junior varsity water polo player and swimmer, he had recently been voted “most inspirational” by his teammates this year.

“This was a tragedy, and local families have lost loved ones,” said CHP Buellton Area Commander Lieutenant Jason Bronson. “We grieve with the families and work every day to prevent this loss of life in our communities.” Click here to read more.

Popular Central Coast Beach Identified as Having One of the Highest Levels of Bacteria in the Country

In pretty gross news… in May a Clean Water Report by the Surfrider Foundation San Luis Obispo Creek as it enters the Pacific Ocean in Avila Beach was determined to have a nationally high level of bacteria. According to testing performed by volunteers, water in the creek was found to have bacteria exceeding California safety standards 38% of the time.

That amount has placed the San Luis Obispo Creek mouth on Surfrider’s “2024 Beach Bacteria Hot Spots.”

Surfrider is now meeting quarterly with several San Luis Obispo County departments, including Public Health, Environmental Health, Public Works, as well as the Regional Water Quality Control Board in a new team effort to find a permanent solution. Click here to read more.

Identified Barricaded Suspect Arrested After Violent Montecito Home Invasion

Violent attack inside the Montecito estate of Beanie Babies creator, Ty Warner, led to the arrest of 43-year-old Russell Maxwell Phay in May. The Nevada resident was booked at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail for attacking a woman inside the home at the time and barricading himself inside a bathroom.

News Channel’s Tracy Lehr was LIVE at the scene, describing dozens of law enforcement vehicles —many unmarked — surrounding the estate.

Phay had reported told investigators he had been direct communication with pop singer Katy Perry through a “head link,” the two were married, and she was the one who directed him to go to the Montecito estate.

Phay was ruled competent to stand trial, and is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 2nd, 2026 for an arraignment hearing. Click here to read more.

Authorities Clarify Orcutt Park “Body Dumping Video” Filmed on Meta Glasses

What seemed to be suspicious activity caught on camera, turned out to be a misunderstanding in Orcutt during the summer time.

In June, Michael Zoppo took his young son to Waller Park in Orcutt to play. While watching his son climb up a tree, the meta glasses he had on at the time caught a woman lying on the asphalt in the park’s parking lot. The viral video ignited rumors and assumptions that the Santa Maria father had caught a body dumping on camera.

However, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office clarified that the woman in the video was heavily intoxicated, and what the video doesn’t show is that she got out of the car on her own.

First responders were able to arrest the 67-year-old driver before he got away, and a medical crew was able to treat the intoxicated woman. Click here to read more.

Federal Raids at Glass House Farms Spark Chaos in Carpinteria and Ventura County

Increased deportations and immigration enforcement initiated by the Trump administation were felt right here at home on the Central Coast in a chaotic scene at two cannabis farms.

Two raids shook the Central Coast as heavily armed federal agents stormed cannabis farms in Carpinteria and Camarillo, deploying tear gas, flashbangs and rubber bullets on crowds that included stunned farmworkers, residents and local officials.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott said 10 juveniles were found inside the facility, all of whom he claims are undocumented, with eight identified as unaccompanied minors. Farm workers were critically injured in the raids according to the United Farm Workers, and it has been confirmed that one farm worker has died as a result.

In Carpinteria, tensions erupted when a crowd of outraged residents and workers confronted federal agents, some clad in military-style gear. Among those at the scene was Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Santa Barbara, a former Marine who presented his congressional ID and demanded to speak with officials. He was physically pushed back and denied access.

Carpinteria City Councilmember Mónica Solórzano was also injured in the clash. Click here to read more.

Three people were arrested in connection with the stabbing, 29-year-old Luis Gerardo Terrazas, 28-year-old Juan Fernando Rios, 30-year-old Sergio Rivas.

Charges were filed against all three men for the death of Anthony Bisquera-Hartley on Aug. 5, 2025. However, new video shown in September shows Bisquera-Hartley was armed and attacked Rivas and Rios. The district attorney says the two acted in self-defense and all murder charges were dropped.

Video of Santa Barbara Healthcare Workers Sparks Disgust and Concern with Locals

A shocking video allegedly filmed at a Sansum Clinic location in Santa Barbara sparked disgust and concern with locals, showing staff posing in front of bodily-fluid stained exam table paper – with text referring to them as “sweet gifts.”

The video, originally posted to Tik Tok, went viral over Labor Day weekend and despite the removal of the video, it spread across several other platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit. A reddit post claims the video was taken at Sutter Health Pesetas Urgent Care in Santa Barbara, a location now run by Sansum clinic.

Missing Nine-Year-Old Melodee Buzzard Found Dead; Mother Ashlee Arrested For Her Murder

In October, authorities were alerted by Lompoc Unified School District of nine-year-old Melodee Buzzard who hadn’t been seen for some time. The search for the missing girl grew nationwide, as investigators followed leads, tips, and surveillance footage of last known movements of Melodee with her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, traveling between the states of California, Nevada, Utah and Nebraska earlier in the month.

Ashlee was reportedly “uncooperative with investigators” and detectives did not receive any verified information about the nine-year-old’s whereabouts outside of the local school district when the public search began.

During the multi-day trip, both were seen wearing wigs and at some point, the license plate on the rental car was swapped with out-of-state plates. Ashlee returned to their Vandenberg Village home without her daughter.

Just days before Christmas, Law enforcement confirmed the body of the local nine-year-old was located in Utah and her mother has been taken into custody on a charge of first degree murder. Ashlee Buzzard plead not guilty, and a gag order against Santa Barbara County sheriffs was signed by Judge John F McGregor and set Ashley’s trial date for January 7th.  Click here to read more.
