Jefferson City housing development receives $1.9 million in tax credits

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A housing development in Jefferson City has been awarded more than $1.9 million in low-income housing tax credits through the Missouri Housing Development, according to a Friday press release from the city.

The credits were awarded for the Moreau Valley housing development — located at 2135 Schotthill Woods Drive – which is a proposed 48-unit multi-family development consisting of 36 three-bedroom units and 12 two-bedroom units, the release says.

The release says eight units will be set aside for the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service.

“Moreau Valley will leverage Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds, LIHTC, and private investment to make this project possible,” the release says.

Information from the city shows $1,130,000 from federal 9% tax credits, while $791,000 is from state 9% tax credits.

The release says Moreau Valley is expected to replace about one-third of rental units lost from the 2019 Jefferson City tornado.

Dozens of Central Oregon kids in foster care are waiting for their advocate. Volunteer training is coming up soon

KTVZ

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — CASA of Central Oregon said Friday it is now accepting applications for its upcoming winter volunteer training course, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Community members have until Friday, January 9 to apply for this eight-week, 40-hour program that prepares volunteers to become Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) to advocate for children in foster care in Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson counties, the organization said.

Here are the details they shared:

This winter training will be held entirely online, making it accessible to anyone in the Central Oregon region. With sessions on Tuesday evenings from 5 to 8:30, the course is designed to fit into the schedules of working adults, parents, retirees, and others looking for a meaningful way to give back.

“The new year is a time to set intentions and find ways to contribute to the community,” says Heather Dion, Executive Director of CASA of Central Oregon. “Becoming a CASA volunteer offers a powerful way to support some of our most vulnerable children during a time when they need a steady and caring adult by their side.”

Once volunteers complete the course and are sworn in by the court, the role is flexible and can be managed around work and family responsibilities.

CASA volunteers spend an average of 10 hours each month getting to know the child they serve, connecting with caregivers and providers, and offering informed recommendations to the court to support the child’s safety and well-being.

More than 70 children in Central Oregon are currently waiting for a CASA volunteer. This winter training offers a chance for community members to step forward and ensure no child navigates the foster care system without someone who is focused on their best interests.

Columbia bus stop location of removed shelter has 600 riders each month

Erika McGuire

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

GoCOMO bus riders are sharing their concerns after the City of Columbia removed a bus shelter and trash container at a bus stop at 21 Conley Road.

The Kroenke Group, who owns the Broadway Crossings, sent a letter to the city on Sept. 19 requesting the bus shelter be removed and it was removed the following week, according to the city.

The Kroneke Group cited the bus stop having several issues including, excessive trash, excessive noise, harassment and even violence.

Columbia Police Department dispatch logs show 54 calls were made to the 2700 block of Trimble Road from Jan. 1-Sept. 19. A city of Columbia spokesman last week said the bus stop was technically located on Trimble Road. A bus stop is listed at 2701 Trimble in dispatch logs.

Of those 54 calls, two were related for trespassing, one was for vandalism and one was for harassment and 33 were listed as “check subject.”

Columbia Fire Department dispatch logs during the same period list a bus stop on Trimble Road having five calls, three of which were medical responses and two were listed as “unknown problems.”

Columbia Public Works spokesman John Ogan said the bus stop has roughly 600 riders every month and there have been several service calls at the stop compared to other shelter locations.

“Prior to its removal, the stop had generated more police responses than is typical for a shelter. These factors contributed to the property owners request or decision to withdraw consent and the shelt’er removal does not change the fact that this remains an active bus stop,” Ogan said.

According to the city, majority of bus shelters are placed on private property via an agreement with the property owner. That agreement allows the property owner to request removal of bus shelters.

“Owners have the ability to request removal of amenities, and a shelter is no different. GOCOMO would have preferred for the shelter to stay in place,” Ogan said.

Christian Tabak with the City of Columbia said in an email Monday, GoCOMO has had money in their budget to add bus shelters to existing stops but it can be difficult to find a willing property owner.

GoCOMO Transit has 228 bus stops, 29 of which have shelters, and most of those shelters are located next to private property, according to the city.

Ogan cited the several businesses that are near the stop and a rider could wait

“There are businesses there that one could, wait in if one needed to, and use the app to see how far away the bus is,” Ogan said.

ABC 17 News spoke with two GoCOMO riders who expressed frustration with the decision to remove the shelter, citing the possibility of inclement weather as a cause for concern.

Wyden, Senate colleagues demand answers from Forest Service after sharp drop in wildfire fuel reduction work

KTVZ

WASHINGTON (KTVZ) — Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said Friday he and Senate colleagues are demanding information from the Trump administration about how many hazardous fuels projects that have completed environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act have not yet been implemented – commonly referred to as “shelf stock.”

“Recent reports indicate that the U.S. Forest Service’s work to reduce hazardous fuels across the national forest system in Fiscal Year 2025 was down nearly 40% from its previous four-year average,”  the lawmakers said in a letter to U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz.

“In a letter to Congress on August 6, 2025, you attributed your constrained ‘capacity to treat additional acres’ in part to ‘significant resource and personnel’ needs elsewhere at the agency,” they wrote.

“Given these issues, and the Trump administration’s reduction of nearly 5,000 USFS staff, we are concerned that the decline in hazardous fuels projects stems from insufficient staffing needed to implement already-approved projects, including for mechanical thinning and prescribed fire.”

The lawmakers said the Trump administration has failed to complete hazardous fuels reduction projects at the same pace and scale as in prior years or at the rate needed in their communities.

“As you know, the best measures to protect lives and property from wildfire is preparedness – reducing fire risks before a conflagration ignites,” the lawmakers concluded.

The letter was led by Senator Michael Bennet, D-Colo. In addition to Wyden, the letter was signed by U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

The text of the letter is here.

Teens accused of attacking man with intellectual disability, trying to start his curtains on fire

Jesus Reyes

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) – Three teenagers were arrested after allegedly attacking a man with an intellectual disability and attempting to start a fire at his home in Twentynine Palms earlier this week.

The incident was first reported Wednesday at around 9 p.m.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called to the 6400 block of East Court Way after the mother of a 15-year-old reported that her child had been assaulted by a neighbor.

Deputies arrived on scene and say they contacted three teens, one of whom claimed to have been assaulted.

During the initial investigation, deputies said they determined the teen’s account was fabricated to conceal the true nature of the incident.

As the investigation progressed, deputies said they discovered a social media reel capturing the actual assault.

Authorities said the video depicted two girls and a boy, violently attacking a man with an intellectual disability. The suspects forced entry into the victim’s apartment and assaulted him. During the attack, one of the girls armed herself with a large kitchen knife and repeatedly slashed at the victim’s arms and head. Throughout the assault, the victim plead for his life.

Before fleeing the apartment, one suspect reportedly attempted to ignite curtains inside the residence in an effort to start a fire.

Due to a collaborative investigative effort, all suspects were immediately identified.

Deputies obtained and executed search warrants for both the victim’s and suspects’ residences, and located evidence related to the violent assault. Deputies also recovered the knife used in the attack.

One of the female juveniles initially reported sustaining lacerations as a result of being assaulted; however, the investigation reportedly revealed her injuries were caused when she punched through the victim’s glass window. Both the victim and the injured suspect received medical treatment.

The suspects were booked into the San Bernardino County Juvenile Detention Center and faces multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, burglary, and criminal threats. Authorities said additional charges will be determined by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Morongo Basin Station at (760) 366-4175.  Callers wishing to remain anonymous may contact the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463) or submit information online at www.wetip.com.
