Volunteers pay tribute to local veterans for National Wreaths Across America Day

Kendall Flynn

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – In Palm Springs and Cathedral City locals gathered to lay 1,315 wreaths on the headstones of veterans for National Wreaths Across America Day.

Welwood Murray Cemetery and Desert Memorial Park are official Wreaths Across America locations, each hosting a wreath-laying ceremony Saturday afternoon, joining more than 4,900 other locations across the nation.

The ceremony at Welwood Murray Cemetery in Palm Springs was hosted by Daughters of the American Revolution Cahuilla Chapter Regent Noma Bruton. The Palm Springs cemetery is home to 139 veterans, each one receiving a wreath.

Bruton said they originally only had enough sponsors to lay 89 wreaths in the cemetery, but the City of Palm Springs sponsored the remaining 50 to ensure all veterans were honored.

As each volunteer approached a headstone, they said the name of the veteran out loud and thanked them for their service.

Shop with a Cop Holiday Event

Olivia Vara

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — Beginning this morning at 9:00 A.M. families gathered at 3 Walmart locations for the annual Shop with a Cop event.

This is partnership that connects children with mentors from Big Brothers Big Sisters, Walmart and local law enforcement to bring a dash of holiday magic.

Selected families shopped side-by-side with EPPD officers and other law enforcement agents, receiving guidance and support as they chose gifts for the season.

Rooted in community kindness, the event transforms a routine shopping morning into a memorable celebration of generosity, mentorship and hope.

“It brings a tear because I remember doing these things for my kids and some of the toys that they grew up with are back, and I see them and I was talking to them and it’s like, hey, look at the Little Suzie’s, like I remember my girls playing with these toys. So, it’s very joyful, ” said Sergeant Jesus Melendez in an interview at today’s event.

This year, Shop with a Cop provided 15 families across three Walmart stores with $200 gift cards to enjoy holiday shopping and fun.

“To see the looks not only on the kids faces, because of course, you expect the joy from them, but to see these law enforcement officers just light up like they’re little kids on Christmas, it is so special,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters Development Director Rebecca Romero during today’s interview.

Missing bird safely returns to the Living Desert

Gavin Nguyen

PALM DESERT, Calif. (KESQ) – A bird that managed to escape from the Living Desert last week was returned safely to the zoo, officials announced on Monday.

“Pili,” a Southern ground hornbill, escaped the zoo grounds on Thursday. Staff initially tracked the bird, but due to the steep terrain, couldn’t follow its path. It was last seen on Friday near the Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

Zoo officials said Pili was spotted Monday morning at the Reserve Country Club in Indian Wells. It was later spotted a few miles away at the Vintage Country Club, where animal Care staff successfully recaptured the hornbill without incident at approximately 9:15 a.m.

“I am happy to report that the bird appears healthy and uninjured following its brief adventure,” said Allen Monroe, CEO and President of The Living Desert. “The eight-year-old male hornbill is currently undergoing veterinary evaluation and will eventually be placed on habitat with the female “Mabel.”

Monroe praised the collaborative effort that led to the bird’s safe return.

“I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our Animal Care Department, whose team worked tirelessly throughout the weekend searching for the bird and coordinating recovery efforts. Their professionalism, persistence, and dedication to animal welfare were exemplary,” Monroe said.

The Living Desert said it received several reported sightings from community members during the search. Officials thanked the individuals and staff at the Reserve and Vintage Country Clubs as well as local media outlets, for sharing information about the bird with the public.

The Living Desert is conducting a thorough review of the incident to ensure continued animal safety.

Fire Department fighting 2-alarm fire near Fillmore St, smoke seen across Colorado Springs

Michael Logerwell

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – The Colorado Springs Fire Department is asking people to avoid an area near Nevada and Fillmore St as firefighters battle a 2-alarm structure fire.

The fire department says the blaze is located at 3117 Century Street, at Beacon Building Products.

CSFD says the fire sparked on a pile of styrofoam and construction materials, creating a huge cloud of black smoke in the lot of a warehouse, which became visible across the city.

“We were hanging out at our buddy’s house, probably 2 or 3 blocks that way, and his kid was just sitting in the window, and he looks out, and he’s like, there’s a huge cloud of black smoke in the sky,” says local, Syreena Hamby. “Making our way in, there was a lot of traffic going on. People running across the road. We were like, what is happening? The smoke was really intense. You couldn’t see like behind you at all. Walking through it was kind of crazy.

As an extra safety measure, CSFD says hazmat crews were on scene monitoring the air quality.

“Just to make sure that none of those chemicals from the styrofoam got into those buildings,” says the spokesperson for the fire department, Ashley Franco.

While firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to the building itself, they remained on scene for hours to snuff out stubborn hotspots under all the material.

Century Road has since been reopened to drivers.

The fire was successfully contained, and there are no reported injuries; however, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Yuma Catholic names veteran Coach Marty Schaetzle as new head of football program

Samuel Kirk

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Yuma Catholic has officially hired longtime college coach Marty Schaetzle as its next head football coach, bringing in a leader with more than four decades of experience on the sideline.

Schaetzle spent 19 seasons as the head coach at Mercyhurst University, where he collected 97 wins and helped guide the program through its transition into Division II competition.

His résumé also includes stops at the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Bucknell, and Shippensburg, giving the Shamrocks a coach with a deep background across multiple levels of the college game.

Schaetzle has already been familiar with the YC community he and his wife moved to Yuma three years ago, and he has been assisting the Shamrocks as an offensive and defensive line coach while settling into the area.

“I coached college football for 40 years,” Schaetzle said. “My wife is from Yuma, and when we moved here I was able to get into Yuma Catholic. I met Rhett, we talked football, and it was a good match. As things progressed and the opportunity opened up, I thought it would be a good idea — and I think I can help the students.”

Schaetzle said the school’s strong commitment to football was a major draw.

“They take football seriously. They want to do well and they provide you with the resources to have a good program,” he said. “The students are special kids. I’ve worked with the O-line and D-line the last couple of years, but now I get to work with all of them.”

As for what kind of team he plans to build, Schaetzle points to the same principles that shaped his college programs.

“I believe in playing great defense and running the football. If you want to win championships, those are the two things teams do — at every level,” he said. “You have to be physical, disciplined and not beat yourself. Take care of the little things and the big things take care of themselves.”

Although he stepped away from college coaching, Schaetzle said the drive to compete and innovate never left.

“You’re always watching film, looking at plays, seeing new wrinkles,” he said. “That never goes away. And I think the players here have so much to learn — not just football, but how to conduct yourself, improve yourself, and get ready for college and life after.”

With finals underway and winter break approaching, Schaetzle told his players their first priority is the classroom. Once they return in January, the program will gradually build toward next fall.

“You can’t get way ahead of yourself in January, and you don’t want to be behind in August,” he said. “We have to keep a good pace, keep getting ready, and before you know it, we’ll be teeing it up for the first game.”

Yuma Catholic now turns the page to a new era, placing its football program in the hands of one of the most experienced coaches in the state.
