Mt. Bachelor delays next week’s planned season opening due to too little snow; new date not yet set

Barney Lerten

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — A week before it was planning and hoping to open, Mt. Bachelor announced Friday that a lack of adequate early snowfall will delay its opening date for the season. No new date has been announced.

“After careful consideration assessing the snowpack and studying the latest weather forecasts, we have made the decision to postpone our scheduled November 28th opening day,” the resort posted on its website and told season pass-holders by email.

“We are committed to opening as soon as conditions allow, which typically requires about a 24” base,” the resort said.

“Keep doing your snow dances and checking the webcams, and we’ll post updates on a new timeline for Opening Day as soon as we can,” Mt. Bachelor said.

In the email to pass-holders, Bachelor President and General Manager John Merriman said, “As you know, early-season conditions at Mt. Bachelor vary greatly from year to year. Given the terrain here, we need to see about a 24” base in order to open and stay open. “

“Our team continues to take advantage of every snowmaking opportunity, and it’s great to see snow and cold temps in the forecast,” he continued. “We are fortunate to average over 400” of snow annually, so we know the snow will come. Once the snow arrives, we’ll be ready to kick off one of the longest seasons in North America. Our teams are prepped, our plans are in place, and the energy across the resort is inspiring, as always.”

Despite the delay, Mt. Bachelor still planned to have its Friday night Winter Kickoff Party at the Deschutes Brewery Tasting Room from 5-7 p.m., with music by DJ The Cosmic, balloon art, games, prizes, and free beer for the first 100 pass-holders.

The resort also said that “guests will automatically receive a refund for products purchased prior to opening. Refund process will take 7-10 days.”

The resort also said the Mt. Bachelor Sports Pro Shop at Mountain Gateway will be open Saturday and Sunday this week with what it called “the largest selection of ski and snowboard gear in the PNW, plus season-Long rentals at the best value in town, available every weekend, at Mt. Bachelor or in Bend. Fall shopping perks include 10% retail discounts for pass-holders when you flash your pass, and non-passholders who spend $300 or more. And, enjoy a free gift with every purchase over $150, while supplies last.”

Former Morgan County corrections officer accused of having sex with inmate

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A former corrections officer at the Morgan County Jail has been charged after they were allegedly in a sexual relationship with an inmate while they were employed.

Ashley Jacobson, of Jefferson City, was charged with sexual conduct in the course of public duty. A warrant was issued on Friday and a $25,000 bond was set.

The probable cause statement says a detainee told officials about seeing Jacobson and another inmate kissing in public and telling other detainees in the cell block to look away. The inmate reported the behavior on Sept. 30 and Jacobson was fired that same day after she declined to interview, the statement says.

Other jail staff noted Jacobson’s behavior was “suspicious” and that she would visit the cell block “in a flirtatious manner,” the statement says.

The inmate in question was interviewed and he allegedly admitted to being in a relationship with Jacobson, claimed they were get married and he would adopt Jacobson’s daughter, the statement says.

A family member of Jacobson also spoke with officials, claimed Jacobson was in a sexual relationship and reiterated the information from the inmate, the statement says.

Longtime prosecutor lands No. 2 spot at Riverside County District Attorney’s office

City News Service

RIVERSIDE (KESQ) – A veteran Riverside County prosecutor will take the No. 2 spot at the District Attorney’s Office, following the retirement of another career litigator who served in the post for a decade.

District Attorney Mike Hestrin on Thursday formally appointed Jared Haringsma as chief assistant district attorney.

Haringsma takes the position previously held — until earlier this month — by John Aki, who retired after nearly a quarter century in the D.A.’s office. Aki had been in Hestrin’s executive circle since the three-term district attorney was first elected in 2014.

“Jared has earned the respect of colleagues throughout our office for his integrity, skill and steady leadership,” Hestrin said. “His depth of trial experience and strong management background make him exceptionally well-suited to help lead this office. … He will continue to strengthen our leadership team and ensure our office upholds the highest standards of fairness and professionalism.”

Haringsma has been employed by the agency since 2002, serving in all of the regional offices countywide. He achieved a standout record for homicide prosecutions over many years, handling multiple complex cases, including five death penalty trials.

Among his previous assignments at the executive level were supervising the Cold Case Unit, overseeing the Administrative Division and managing the Accounting Office.

Like Hestrin and Aki, prior to moving over to the management side of the D.A.’s office, Haringsma was active in the Riverside County Deputy District Attorneys’ Association, where many working relationships involving individuals now leading the office were cemented.

United Way ramps up meal prep for thousands of residents in need this Thanksgiving

Patrick Holleron

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — As the days countdown to Thanksgiving, preparations are ramping up in support of those in need this holiday season.

United Way of Greater St. Joseph, with support from Mosaic Life Care, is entering Day 4 of its volunteer series titled “7 Days of Caring,” to help prepare meal kits prior to Thanksgiving.

Meal prep sessions have been ongoing this week and will continue with the goal of distributing 2,100 kits to families.

“The kits are going out the door right as we’re packing them. They will be delivered to agencies, schools, food pantries and to their clients before the Thanksgiving holiday,” United Way President Kylee Strough said. “We know once the holiday week hits, probably starting Wednesday and definitely by Thursday, it’s going to be hard to find the helpers. A lot of these places are going to be closed.”

“7 Days of Caring” will continue until Tuesday, Nov. 25 with three more volunteer opportunities. The large-scale effort was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Mosaic Life Care and the Mosaic Life Care Foundation.

Upcoming sessions:

Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Monday, Nov. 24 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

While the nonprofit is boosting efforts to support the community in advance of Thanksgiving, volunteer events are already being planned out for the month of December and the Christmas season, a notable help for families adjusting to students being home for holiday break.

“I didn’t want to plan it too far in advance, because we wanted to make sure the agencies and schools felt it was useful to the households they work with,” Strough said. “The sense we’re getting is ‘Yes’ it’s helpful and appreciated. We especially are trying to ramp up efforts before we get into the big Christmas – New Year break, when kids are out of school for a couple weeks there’s extra mouths to feed in the homes.”

United Way is also scheduling a volunteer session to focus on assembling hygiene kits. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Way Center located at 118 S 5th St.

CORRECTION: CDOT says overnight Friday lane closures on Powers Boulevard not happening

Scott Harrison

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) clarified a KRDO 13 report on Friday regarding scheduled overnight median work on a mile-long stretch of Powers Boulevard on the east side of the city.

An alert posted on a map on CoTrip.org’s website stated that two left lanes northbound and southbound overnight Friday between the Platte Avenue overpass and Aeroplaza Drive would be closed.

CoTrip.org

The alert announced the closure times as starting at 7 p.m. Friday and ending at 4 a.m. Saturday, near the ongoing project to build a new overpass at the Powers/Airport Road intersection.

However, a CDOT representative said that the closures happened earlier this week and will not be happening this weekend.

Possibly a confusing point is that the CoTrip map shows a “21” symbol, shaped like a tear-off calendar, over the project area — which could mean the project’s supposed start date of November 21, or Powers’ official designation as Colorado Highway 21.

“We don’t know why it’s showing that,” the representative told KRDO 13’s The Road Warrior.

Meanwhile, another project in that general area — also posted on CoTrip, apparently, will happen this weekend.

Utility repair work will close the westbound shoulder of US 24, east of the Platte Avenue overpass, between Highway 94 and Valley Street, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday — a distance of 1.3 miles.

CoTrip.org

As of late Friday afternoon, CoTrip had removed the “21” from its Powers map location and replaced it with a “22,” referring to the US 24 utility work, even though that work is not on Powers.

Former Pulaski County teacher sentenced to prison for child sex crimes

Matthew Sanders

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A former Pulaski County substitute teacher and paraprofessional charged with 19 felonies a year for allegedly offering children money, drugs and alcohol for sex has been sentenced to prison.

Carissa J. Smith, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday after pleading guilty to one count of child endangerment and two counts of having sexual contact with a student.

Smith worked in the Dixon School District but resigned a few months before charges were made public in November 2024. The investigation started when detectives interviewed a victim who said they had been coerced into sex with Smith — including her supplying marijuana, alcohol and money — on multiple occasions, according to a probable cause statement.

The statement identified at least five victims.
