STERLING HEIGHTS, Michigan (WXYZ) — A Sterling Heights police officer is being praised as a hero after saving a 5-month-old baby’s life at a local Walmart earlier this month.

Officer Edwar Talia, who has been with the Sterling Heights Police Department for seven years, was working special detail on the night of November 1 when he received an emergency call that would test his recently renewed CPR training.

“David 90, we have a child choking, report to customer service, so I rushed in there,” Talia said.

At 8:30 p.m., Talia sprinted to what he described as a scene straight from a nightmare. Baby Jameson’s mother, Bayley Simon, was nursing her son when the infant suddenly went blue and limp.

“He was like a wet noodle, there was nothing there, no movement nothing,” Simon said.

Talia, who had been re-certified in CPR training just one week prior to the incident, immediately began applying life-saving measures. He performed several back blows on the infant, being careful not to use too much force.

“I’m not going too hard, just enough to where I could feel it on the other side of my hand, obviously I don’t want to hit him too hard,” Talia said.

After several back blows, Jameson’s airway cleared and he took a deep breath. The baby then started having hiccups, which Talia recognized as a positive sign.

“I know once the baby gets hiccups, they need to burp so I grabbed baby Jameson put him over my shoulder started patting his back and he actually fell asleep on me,” Talia said.

Simon expressed her gratitude for both the bystanders who comforted her during the terrifying ordeal and Officer Talia, who gave her son another chance at life.

“I’m not necessarily sure I would still have my son,” Simon said.

For Talia, the incident represented the true meaning of his oath to serve and protect.

“We pride ourselves on serving and protecting but that day especially that was full on protection mode,” Talia said. “I just wanted to make sure baby Jameson went home alive.”

The officer called the experience both a first and hopefully a last in his seven-year career with the department.

Colorado (KCNC) — Deputies came to the rescue earlier this week when an older Colorado woman fell and became trapped on the roof of a host home for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Arapahoe County deputies were called to the scene in the 6500 block of S. Lisbon Street on Thursday to find the 69-year-old woman lying on her back with her legs dangling over the edge of the roof. She was bracing herself on the gutter as two caretakers on ladders, afraid she would fall, held her in place.

Deputies climbed onto the roof and pulled her back from the edge before helping her back inside through a nearby window. Authorities said the caretakers were hanging Christmas lights when the woman opened the second-story window and walked out onto the roof, where she slipped and fell.

The sheriff’s department said the woman was not injured.

Filipino Festival welcomes thousands after weather cancellation

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) — Thousands gathered in Downtown Park in Palm Springs Saturday for the Coachella Valley Filipino Festival.

The highly anticipated event finally kicked off after it was postponed last weekend due to weather.

Over 50 vendors, locals and visitors gathered to celebrate Filipino culture, with many saying they were happy the event was rescheduled so they could continue to share their Filipino heritage in the Valley.

“It’s important because it’s Filipino festival and we’re heritage Filipino. And we. So we don’t get to see this that often in the community. So it’s a big thing for us to come out in spite of the cloudy weather. It reminds me the good old days in the Philippines,” said Thelma Santos, a Beaumont resident.

Colorado Springs veteran flies to Jamaica to help his family and others rebuild

Marina Garcia

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – Many in Jamaica still have limited access to food and power, almost a month after Hurricane Melissa rocked the Caribbean island.

At a time when many are leaving, one Colorado Springs veteran went to the island to help his family and others rebuild.

Somehow, with no electricity, KRDO13 was able to speak to Horace Brown, who is also the president of Elected United, a non-profit organization.

He tells us a family member was holding a cordless light above his head, so that we could see him during the interview.

“One of the reasons why I decided to fly out to Jamaica was to see how I could assist using my nonprofit organization, by helping the victims out here by providing some kind of relief,” says Brown.

Brown tells us he led his non-profit team to tackle some of the big issues that people are currently facing.

“The first thing that we initially tackled was the food shortage, because everything was cut off for different parts of the island, cut off from the main stream. We were able to bring in food such as rice and items from Kingston, where it wasn’t devastated as badly as the western part of the island,” says Brown.

Horace tells us he and his brother helped remove trees from homes, helped a hospital save important documents by drying them in the sun, and helped repair the roof of that same hospital.

“It’s different when you see it on the ground. And, people have been devastated out here in Jamaica. They lost their entire savings, their entire houses, and everything that they worked for. So anything that a person can do to help any one of these affected people, that would be much appreciated,” says Brown.

Dos Pueblos Boys Cross Country wins CIF-SS D2 title; San Marcos girls qualify for state

Mike Klan

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT). – Dos Pueblos High School cross country is celebrating the boys CIF-Southern Section Division 2 championship with a four point win over Hart (84-88).

With a school record 3 mile total combined time of 1:13:30 for 5 runners (Avg Time of 14:42 per man) and a spread of 27 seconds from first to fifth runner, Dos Pueblos came out on top of the podium at Mt. San Antonio College.

From head coach David Jackson:

“With cool temps in the low 50s, the Chargers took Race #1 with determination. Lead by a 1-2 punch from Owen Abbot and Phil Contakes we put ourselves in contention. We were positioned in 4th, 40 points behind Hart of Santa Clarita. With Linus Martin, Ashton Smedley, Oliver Saleh and Cullen Gully in a pack of their own, pushing the chase pack, our race for gold was on. We came through the two mile mark just 1 point behind. And in a final push for the Championship, we were 4 points ahead. With such a close margin of victory, we were feeling vindicated for all the hard work at he edge of the continent, up here at the top of the Southern Section. And, then we saw the merged results. We came out on top of the whole section. Such an accomplishment is exciting, and we still have the State Championship to go. So, we’ll savor the moment.”

The DP girls did not advance to the State final after finishing in 9th place out of 16 teams. The Chargers were led by Cate Bishop who helped DP finish three places higher than last year. She came in 24th overall individually with a time of 17:38.

The San Marcos girls cross country team qualified for next weekend’s CIF State Meet with a sixth place finish overall. Sofi Hernandez had a personal-best time of 17:46. Elsie Tuttle was close behind at 17:49 followed by Samara Shalhoub (18:12), Layla Llewellyn (18:17) and Autumn Richardson (18:25).
