EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) — This Saturday Cesar Ornelas Law partnered with Operation H.O.P.E. for it’s 30th annual Thanksgiving food giveaway.

It all happened beginning at 10 AM at the El Paso County Coliseum-Pavilion.

TNA Wrestling, the El Paso County Coliseum and additional community partners banded together ahead of this Thanksgiving with the aim of positively impacting the El Paso Community.

The goal of the Thanksgiving food giveaway was to serve over 1000 families, bringing kindness through action.

Former TNA International Chamption Frankie Kazarian and reigning TNA X Division Champion Leon Slater also joined Operation H.O.P.E. volunteers for this annual Thanksgiving food giveaway.

This year’s event was organized by co-founder Rubi Gonzales, who took over for her father Angel Gonzales. He passed away last year.

“My mom and my dad started this when I was a little girl. They grew up in Segundo Barrio area. They were from low income. They didn’t always have the funds to celebrate the holidays,” Rubi Gonzales said during an interview at Saturday’s event.

“I miss my dad being out here, being the support, the one to give us, but it makes me happy that people recognize him and recognize us, still, and when we continue to help families that need help, that they know that we’re here to serve under Angel Gomez,” Rubi said.

Rubi Gonzales and her son continue to honor her father’s legacy and the spirit of giving back to the community.

Local fighters participate in Yuma Fight League 7

Paul Vozzella

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) – Yuma Fight League (YFL) 7 showcased some of the best local talent the Desert Southwest has to offer.

The stage was set, the fighters were ready, and there was a packed crowd for YFL 7.

In a city filled with hidden talent, YFL shined a light on fighters who otherwise have to go long distances to gain exposure.

“We have our time to show out, promote ourselves. A lot of these places like this, we have to go out of town, so with us to just be able to drive 15 minutes, it’s a blessing for all the fighters here,” said John Ortega, a fighter.

Even for those willing to make long trips for fights in Phoenix or California, the experience can be vastly different.

“We’re always looked at those small-town guys and these big gyms look at us like, ‘Eh, look at these little guys. Let’s just smash them and get them outta there.’ I was like, it’s nice to just have the spotlight for a little bit here in Yuma,” said Alexander Magana, the main event fighter.

For many fighters, the event offered a platform to launch careers.

“With the Commission and everything, I fought in the second and the third one, but with its new record now, so now I’m 0 and 0. It’s my debut,” said Edgar Lopez, another fighter.

But once the referee calls for the start, it was all up to the fighters to prove their worth in the octagon.

Fans may not see the work put in leading up to the event, but they always see the results of the rigorous training the athletes put themselves through.

At the end of the night, all that matters was what happens when the cage is closed.

“Ready to go. Got all the training in. Now it’s time to put it in the cage,” said Richard Molina, another main event fighter.

YFL 7 continues to prove that there is an abundance of local talent in the MMA world.

‘It’s beautiful’: Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office provides holiday cheer through Thanksgiving meals to those in need

Claire Elmer

(Update: adding video, interviews with recipients and DCSO deputy)

REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) — Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office employees spent the weekend delivering Thanksgiving meals to some of Central Oregon’s most vulnerable residents, aiming to ease food insecurity and isolation ahead of the holiday.

The effort comes on the heels of the recent federal government shutdown, which created uncertainty and delays around SNAP food benefits for many low-income families and seniors.

Members of the Deschutes County Sheriff Employee Association packed boxes filled with traditional Thanksgiving dinner items, then joined deputies to personally deliver them to households across rural Deschutes County.

The association said the goal is to bring holiday dinners directly to people who may struggle to shop, travel, or afford a full meal. They were able to provide 35 boxes this year, with some added help from donations by Local Acres Marketplace.

Deputies went door-to-door, dropping off boxes to seniors and others in need who said the assistance makes a real difference. Residents described the visit as not just a food delivery, but a welcome reminder that their community has not forgotten them during a stressful season.

The visit meant a great deal to Redmond resident Helen Baron, especially now that she doesn’t get out as much as she used to. “I just think it’s really nice. I’m really very thankful for them,” Baron said.

For seniors living on limited income, the holidays can amplify financial strain and loneliness, and a ready-to-cook Thanksgiving box can help ease both.

Another Redmond resident, James “Dutch” Mook, said it has become harder to make ends meet and that receiving a free holiday meal felt ‘amazing’. “I think it’s beautiful. I mean, how many times do you get something free? It doesn’t happen very often,” Mook emphasized.

This year’s deliveries were shaped in part by the fallout from the federal shutdown that began October 1 and temporarily disrupted SNAP benefit distributions for millions of Americans. While benefits are resuming after the shutdown ended on November 12, some households have faced delays, partial payments or confusion about what will arrive and when.

Sheriff’s office employees said they wanted to step in locally as families and seniors worried about whether holiday food budgets would stretch far enough. By providing full Thanksgiving dinner kits, they hoped to ease that uncertainty, at least for this week.

Deputy Danny Graham, who helped with the deliveries, said the outreach is especially important in rural senior communities, where many people live on fixed incomes and holiday meals can be difficult to afford or prepare.

“This senior community out here, a lot of folks are on fixed incomes, and meals can be difficult to provide for the holidays,” Graham said.

Graham said efforts like this reflect a broader commitment to serve in ways that go beyond traditional law enforcement, focusing on care and connection as well as public safety. “We’re just not out enforcing laws, but we’re taking care of our community in other ways as well,” he added.

The sheriff’s office has highlighted community programs as part of its mission, from seasonal outreach to youth and families to safety initiatives across the county’s 3,055 square miles. Deputies on this weekend’s route said they hope the Thanksgiving deliveries bring a bit of comfort and a sense of togetherness to the people they serve.

New York (WCBS, WLNY) — A raging fire in Mount Vernon, New York forced dozens of people out of an apartment building early Sunday morning in Westchester County.

Mount Vernon officials said the flames broke out shortly before 3 a.m. at a building on Cottage Avenue. Hours later, there was still an active scene.

Officials said the fire started in a kitchen on the seventh floor and then spread to the cockloft, the space between the ceiling and the roof.

“The fire got inside there, and once it gets inside there, it spreads all over,” Mount Vernon Fire Chief Juan Peralta said.

Neighbors said they could see and smell the smoke from blocks away, plus charred walls and broken windows as they got up close.

“Blazing fire, blazing, blazing was just going and going and going,” said resident Eileen Charles Forteau.

Multiple agencies were called to assist, including the FDNY and emergency responders from across Westchester.

“This is an old age style pre-war building, and there are no standpipes. So, of course, that makes it a little more difficult,” Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said on the scene.

Two residents were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, and five firefighters were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Help for residents who have been displaced The mayor and the Red Cross were on the scene to help the roughly 100 residents who were displaced.

“Families that have been impacted are being serviced over at the Doles Center here in Mount Vernon so that they can get some warmth, some beverage, fill out the paperwork that is necessary, so that we can begin getting them housing vouchers and food vouchers and assistance,” the mayor said.

Neighbors across the street were also impacted — all just days before Thanksgiving.

“My building didn’t have no water right now because I guess all the water is gone,” Charles Forteau said.

Minivan crashes into home, killing driver

MILWAUKEE (WISN) — A minivan crashed into a house near 19th and Windlake Avenue in Milwaukee just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, killing the 29-year-old driver and causing significant damage to the property.

The shocking incident was captured on surveillance video, showing the vehicle speeding down the street, losing control, and veering onto the sidewalk before crashing into the home, causing the porch to collapse and scattering debris across the yard.

Shane Mervyn, the homeowner, was in bed when the crash occurred.

“I would describe it as like a huge bass drum because it was just a huge thump,” Mervyn said. “By the time I got out here, I figured out ‘oh that’s why.'”

Despite the destruction of his porch, Mervyn’s house remains habitable.

“The fire department and the city inspector were both here to inspect for structural damage and thankfully there isn’t any,” Mervyn said.

While Milwaukee police have not yet determined the cause of the crash, Mervyn has his suspicions.

“Those are not my beers, those were taken out of the vehicle,” he said. “There is no brakes or skid marks, and it was a pretty straight shot, they estimated he was doing about 80.”

Mervyn is left with a massive mess but is grateful to be alive.

“No one here was hurt and nothing was damaged that can’t be fixed,” Mervyn said.
