RIVERSIDE, California (KABC) — The Cabazon man who killed his 7-month-old son, Emmanuel Haro, was sentenced to over 30 years in prison on Monday.

Baby Emmanuel’s parents reported him missing back in August, but his body has not been found. He is presumed to be dead.

In 2023, Jake Haro pleaded guilty in a child abuse case involving another one of his children. The judge in that case sentenced him to probation and community service, saying he was giving him “a second chance.” Now, after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his son Emmanuel, the judge in the case threw the book at him.

“Mr. Haro, the man who was supposed to protect these defenseless children… the sentence here is the most that the court can do to ensure that as much justice is done as possible,” Judge Gary Polk said in court.

The superior court judge sentenced Jake Haro to more than 30 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to murdering Emmanuel and then falsely reporting he’d been kidnapped.

He was sentenced to 25 years to life for second-degree murder. But, the judge also sentenced him to two terms — 6 months plus 6 years and 8 months — for violation of probation in the previous child abuse case. Jake will serve the time for the previous case before he begins his 25 years to life sentence for the murder of baby Emmanuel.

“I stand here with you, asking you to give him the maximum,” the child’s grandmother, Mary Beushausen, said.

Beushausen gave an impact statement in court, saying Jake — her daughter Rebecca Haro’s husband — never let her meet 7-month-old Emmanuel.

“I wish he could look at me and tell me why,” she said.

It all started back on the night of Thursday, Aug. 14, when Haro’s wife, Rebecca, claimed that she’d been attacked in the parking lot of a Big 5 in Yucaipa. She said she was knocked unconscious, and when she woke up, she said her little boy had been kidnapped.

“Please, I’m begging you. Please, God, please,” Rebecca said in an interview with Eyewitness News at the time.

“He was a healthy baby, he was crawling, he was kicking, he was playing with his toys,” Jake said in the same interview.

Family members then showed up at the Big 5, saying they were trying to organize a search effort. But, it all turned out to be a ruse.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Jake and Rebecca stopped cooperating with them. Days later, they were both arrested and charged with murder.

“If I had known what was going on, I would have taken my daughter out of there forcefully, or I would have called the police,” Beushausen said in court. “Everybody in my family, all of my children, are destroyed by this.”

The judge also ordered Jake to pay $10,000 in restitution.

Meanwhile, the child’s mother, Rebecca, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the case of her missing son. She’s set to be back in court in January.

No new information came to light in court on Monday regarding the whereabouts of the missing baby’s body.

Army veteran speaks at Columbia church about experience delivering aid in Gaza

Sam Roe

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Retired Lt. Col. Anthony Aguilar, a 25-year army veteran and humanitarian aid worker, spoke on Monday night about his experience in Gaza.

The event was sponsored by Missourians for Justice in Palestine and was hosted at United Methodist Church in Columbia.

Aguilar spent time earlier this year delivering aid as part of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and has spent the past few months as a self-described “whistleblower.” He has been speaking out against what he sees as a lack of aid and its poor administration.

“It was very apparent to me in the very beginning that the distribution of aid was not being done in line with humanitarian principles,” Aguilar said to the crowd. “The amount of aid that was bringing, that was being brought in was far, far below what was sufficient to feed the population.”

Aguilar claimed in some cases, there were only 20 people responsible for distributing aid to groups that numbered in the tens of thousands. He described the scene as being similar to “The Hunger Games” as they would drop off the food while the people fought over it.

“And the more that I, as each day went on of me being there, it became clearly apparent to me that it was an intentional design to further starve the population,” Aguilar said.

“To displace the population for militarized objectives [and] to essentially weaponize food to a starving population.”

The discussion also focused on the current ceasefire deal in Gaza, which Aguilar sees as ineffective, saying leaders need to step up, as there are still people dying in the conflict.

Local fan joins in on Dodgers parade

KESQ News Team

LOS ANGELES (KESQ) –  It was a day of celebration in Los Angeles as the city hosted a World Series parade for the second year in a row.

Tens of thousands of fans turned out to the celebration in downtown LA Monday morning, showing off their pride for the team.

Some local fans also made the journey, including local resident Mark Morocco, who’s become a mini-celebrity for bringing his dogs to countless Dodger games in the last decade.

“It’s been a blessing of seeing the Dodgers just have such a good team and so entertaining going to the games. it’s hard not to be a baseball fan, let alone a Dodger fan,” Morocco said.

Morocco says he started the drive at 6 o’clock this morning and it took three hours — with a lot of traffic — to get to the parade.

Reactions to Jake Haro sentencing of 25 years to life for murder of infant son

Shay Lawson

CABAZON, Calif. (KESQ)  – An emotional plea from Mary Beushausen, Emmanuel Haro’s maternal grandmother in the courtroom on Monday.

“He never gave me a chance to see my grandchildren. He kept my daughter away,” Beushausen said.

Jake Haro, 32, is heading to prison after pleading guilty in the murder of his 7-month old son – Emmanuel Haro.

Jake Haro is sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

The Riverside County District Attorney’s office said Jake Haro was charged with one count each of murder, assault on a child under 8 causing death and filing a false police report.

This as his wife, Rebecca Haro, is scheduled for a separate preliminary hearing.

Diane Blair, who has been following the case, shared her reaction to the sentencing.

“Not harsh enough,” Blair said. “I believe that it needed to be a lot harsher. Emmanuel would have never ended up where he is now had they actually been harsh enough his first sentence, and not let him out with his daughter.”

Jake Haro admitted to assaulting his son, Emmanuel Haro, to the point that it caused his death, according to court documents.

Haro pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder and filing a false police report. His guilty pleas were to the court and not a plea agreement with the District Attorney’s Office.

He received an aggregate sentence of 180 days for filing a false police report and six years and 8 months for a prior child abuse case that left an infant girl unable to walk or feed herself for the rest of her life.

“It would have never happened to Emmanuel had he’d been locked up where he should have been,” said Blair.

More of a historic funeral home in Jefferson City can be saved

Alison Patton

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Jefferson City Council approved a resolution at Monday’s meeting allowing the Missouri Association of Counties to preserve another portion of the historic Buescher Memorial Home.

The front part of the former funeral was known to be in good condition to renovate and preserve, but MAC Executive Director Steve Hobbs said he thought the additional building on the back side — which was added to the original building — would need to be torn down and rebuilt.

“When the architect first said, ‘I think we can save that back building.’ I said, ‘No, no, no, no, we’re not going to,'” Hobbs said.

Saving the back building will actually give MAC more space to work with for its headquarters, office space and training center.

“This is historically better for the community because that building has been there for 50 years,” Hobbs said.

Renovations and work on the former funeral home begin in January, Hobbs said. The $5 million project is expected to take 18-24 months to complete and open sometime in 2028.
