Local quilters hand-make over 300 quilts for children with disabilities

Bradley Davis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – Quilters from the local chapter of Quilts for Kids and the Colorado Springs Quilt Guild sewed over 300 colorful and unique quilts for the Special Kids Special Families (SKSF) community.

“Just an overwhelming, wow!” Quilts for Kids volunteer Kristin Alexander said after stacking all the quilts.

It is quite the display. Quilts for Kids said the average quilt takes about 15 to 20 hours to make. Each one is a unique pattern and design. Wednesday morning, the local chapter packed them up and delivered all 313 to SKSF.

“It’s not just warmth, but they also bring a lot of happiness and joy,” said Kristin’s mom and fellow volunteer quilter, Bonnie Alexander. “Quilts just make people happy. They can last with that kid all their lives.”

SKSF is a non-profit that provides services to people with disabilities and their families. They specialize in daycare and foster home services for children with disabilities, but it also provides resources for adults with disabilities.

“These kids don’t have a lot, right? So, one of these quilts is going to make a big difference on Christmas Day,” said SKSF events and donor relations manager Bailee Barwick.

SKSF said it will use the quilt donation for its annual Christmas gift giveaway. Kristin and Bonnie said the Colorado Springs Quilt Guild sponsored their giveaway, and the guild’s quilters made about 60% of the stock.

America250 food truck to deliver 40,000 pounds of food to Mid-Missouri

Jazsmin Halliburton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A truck full of food donations from America250 arrived in Mid-Missouri on Wednesday morning, carrying 40,000 pounds of food.

The thousands of pounds of food was delivered to The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri on Vandiver Drive with 40,000 pounds of food will be donated to Mid-Missouri communities.

The President and CEO of the food bank, Lindsay Lopez, told ABC 17 News that the food bank serves 32 counties and will work with partners to help distribute the food across Mid-Missouri. “We provide food to distribution partners, partner agencies in those 32 counties, 145 partner agencies that we work with, and 200 schools,” said Lopez. “So this food that is very nutritious will be utilized here in Boone County. And, potentially to partners outside of Boone County as well.”

Missouri is one of the first five states to receive the truckloads of food, along with Oregon, Michigan, Arkansas and Texas.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched a food donation campaign with 250 truckloads of food that will be delivered to communities across all 50 states.

The LDS initiated the national humanitarian initiative to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

According to the LDS website, each truck will include canned fruits, vegetables, meats, pasta, flour, pancake mix and dried milk. Most of the food provided is produced by the church or funded by members.

Harvey James of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints told ABC 17 that the church produces most of the food. “(The church) has an extensive food production operation,” said James. “It has farms that can feed enough other facilities.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be delivering the 250 trucks to all 50 states between November and July 4.

‘I know he’s innocent’: Julius Jones’ mom details life 4 years after her son’s execution was stopped

By Meghan Mosley

Oklahoma (KOCO) — It has been exactly four years since Julius Jones was set to be executed by the state of Oklahoma.

His case made national headlines, and it is one many Oklahomans remember. But for his family, this case has defined their lives for more than 20 years.

“You’ve kept faith this whole time. Talk to me about that,” KOCO’s Meghan Mosley said to Julius’ mother, Madeline Davis-Jones.

“That’s all I have. All you need is a little bit of faith,” Davis-Jones said.

Faith is what has gotten the mother through the last two decades.

“Three days after he had just turned 19, all of this happened,” Davis-Jones said.

It was July 1999, when businessman Paul Howell was shot and killed in front of his family in Edmond.

“It happened so fast, and you’re just in this situation where you’re just thinking… run,” Rachel Howell, Paul Howell’s daughter, said in 2021.

Julius was charged for the crime and was later sentenced to death for Paul Howell’s murder.

“Julius Jones murdered Paul Howell in cold blood in front of his sister and daughter,” former Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter said in 2020.

Julius’ life, and his mother’s life, changed in that moment.

“It could just take a few minutes, and your life can be turned upside down,” Davis-Jones said.

While her life changed, the case took off. It drew national attention due to another person admitting to the murder and various claims of racial bias.

A-list celebrities even took up the case.

Meanwhile, a mother was still doing everything she could to keep her son alive.

“My faith and the people I’m surrounded by keeps me a lot. It gives me strength,” Davis-Jones said.

Nov. 18, 2021, was the day he would have been put to death.

“Walk me through Nov. 18. That day,” Meghan Mosley said.

“Oh gosh, you would do that to me. Nov. 18, well the night before, can I go back a little bit?” Davis-Jones said. “When we made it home that evening, I just had to give it to the Lord. I said You gave me this child, and I’m going to have to give him back to You. I said because I did all I could do. I know he’s innocent, and I don’t believe that You would give me something and take it away like that, and I just had to trust Him.”

But in the hours before Julius was set to die, Gov. Kevin Stitt spared his life, commuting his sentence to life without the possibility of parole.

“Next thing I know, when they told me that the governor had stopped the execution, I don’t know how to tell you how I felt. You know, how you feel a sigh of relief, and it’s like something has been taken from you but given back to you,” Davis-Jones said. “I was happy but then sad because he’s still not coming home.”

The Jones family said their fight is still not over.

“You were hesitant when you said justice for Julius. Do you think he got justice?” Meghan Mosley asked.

“I don’t feel he got justice. It’s I song a listen to. It’s good to be alive, but it’s best to live. And I don’t feel like that he’s gotten justice. He’s gotten a chance to someday have true justice,” Davis-Jones said.

His attorneys are still pushing to get him out.

“Why are you guys still fighting for him to get out?” Meghan Mosley asked.

“We’re fighting for him, because we know that he’s innocent,” Davis-Jones said.

But in the meantime, Julius remains optimistic about life.

“I think it’s amazing how he’s incarcerated, but he still has this vision, this gift, and God has brought out a lot of gifts in him,” Davis-Jones said. “The last time I was able to see him, he was beginning to get gray, but I told him he’s joining in the club now. It’s just a lot of things, but I try to look at the positive things.”

His mother also remains hopeful for the future.

“I have a good feeling, if they really do the right thing and put all the pieces together, I know he’s coming on home,” Davis-Jones said.

KOCO reached out to the family of Paul Howell. His daughter, Rachel, said that their family continues to live every day with the reality that her father was murdered, and their lives were permanently changed.

While others mark the date as an anniversary of clemency, for the Howell family, it’s a reminder of the life that was taken and the pain they still carry.

Teenage girl stabbed 14 times by ‘obsessed’ co-worker saved by her brother in Pottawatomie County

SHAWNEE, Oklahoma (KOCO) — An 18-year-old girl in Pottawatomie County is in critical condition after law enforcement said she was stabbed 14 times by an obsessed co-worker outside her home.

According to a 911 call, the attacker approached the girl wearing a ski mask while she was eating a burger on her porch near Hillcrest Drive in Shawnee.

“Someone with a ski mask came up to my daughter on the porch. She was eating a burger and what did he do? He started stabbing her, and he said he was so sorry. He said, ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry,’ and he started stabbing her,” the 911 caller said.

Authorities said the attacker hid and waited for the teen before launching the assault.

“He was just obsessed with this female. She had no interest whatsoever, and it just drove him to the brink of committing this crime. He went as far as sending unsolicited DoorDash orders, different gifts that were not wanted,” said Capt. Jared Strand, Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

The teenager and the 24-year-old suspect worked together, which is when the stalking began, deputies said.

The teenager’s older brother intervened during the attack, sustaining minor injuries.

“He saved his sister’s life,” Strand said.

The girl suffered wounds to her neck, wrist, face and lungs.

Through interviews and matching the suspect’s vehicle, deputies identified the co-worker and arrested him in Newalla, where they found evidence linking him to the attack.

“Anything like this, please report it to us immediately. Even though it may appear not to be a big deal and it’s someone who may have a crush on you or whatever it is, call us so we can take an information report, so we have all this information documented,” he said.

HARRAH, Oklahoma (KOCO) — A car crashed into a coffee shop in Harrah after the driver reportedly told police that her foot was stuck on the gas pedal.

The crash happened at The Simple Brew. The accident caused the vehicle to go through two sets of walls before being stopped by a bar counter.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The owners of the coffee shop said that, fortunately, patrons who are usually present at that time were not there at the time of the crash.

The coffee shop will be closed Wednesday.

“We are planning to open our actual drive-thru on Thursday normal hours. We will put a sign on the boarded windows and an arrow to point you in the right direction for the time being. Please be patient with us and any support you can offer, we are so appreciative of,” the shop said on social media. “Our coffee roaster was not hit, so if you need to stock your pantry with coffee beans for the weekend and Thanksgiving, you can still order online on our website.”

The restaurant said Sunday Soup Kitchens will be paused indefinitely.

‘Heart is pounding’: Flight instructor and teen pilot make emergency landing on highway

By Jason Burger

Oklahoma (KOCO) — A flight instructor and his 16-year-old student pilot made an emergency landing on Highway 77 in Noble County after their plane’s engine failed during a night flight.

The pair had taken off from Ponca City Airport, intending to return to Yukon after a break.

“There was a solid loud thud, and I looked down at the tachometer, which shows you your RPMs for the engine, and it went to zero, showing there’s no power in the engine,” student pilot Landon Atkinson said.

Certified flight instructor Owen Navarro praised Atkinson’s composure.

“You were a lot calmer and more relaxed than I probably would have been as a 16-year-old student,” Navarro said.

At about 6,000 feet in the air, the engine failed.

“Your heart is pounding, but all you can do is go back to your training, say a quick prayer, and hope you get to the ground,” Atkinson said.

Navarro took over the controls and attempted to restart the engine but was unsuccessful.

“Everything was normal. We tried to restart the engine, and we couldn’t get anything,” Navarro said.

They began searching for nearby airports using different radio frequencies.

“As he was getting the frequency and plugging them in, I was telling Kansas City Center what the situation was, and we were trying to make Perry because that’s what we had planned before,” Navarro said.

“We were going to try to do Perry airport, which was about nine miles from us. We couldn’t make that. We were going to do I-35, and decided we couldn’t make that, and it probably wasn’t the best decision,” Atkinson said.

Navarro then noticed headlights from a car on Highway 77.

“I kind of watch it to see the headlights illuminate down the street, and at that point, I knew that’s what we were going to have to do,” he said.

They had to take into account power lines, trees and other cars. But they successfully landed the plane on Highway 77 near Yearling Road, a few miles north of Perry.

“When we landed, the first sounds you hear are the coyotes, because they’re howling off in the distance. It’s dark out there,” Atkinson said.

Alto Flight Academy, where Atkinson is training, posted a statement on social media, saying, “Alto Flight Academy performs initial and recurrent emergency training with our flight instructors. They attend a weekly staff safety meeting whereby we review safety procedures and emergency scenarios for training.”

No one was injured. The cause of the engine failure is under investigation.

‘Serious mistake’: Police investigating after officer leaves rifle on roof of vehicle

By Beau Bowman

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) — A rifle was found on the roof of a Des Moines police squad car around 2 p.m. Sunday after someone driving behind the car noticed it and alerted an officer.

“I thought maybe it was a bike rack at first or something but I kind of seen it hanging over the edge and I was like no … is that … ? I think that’s an assault rifle just sitting on top of their vehicle,” said Andrea Jones, who first saw the weapon on the roof near the Des Moines Public Schools Central Campus on the west side of downtown.

Jones said she caught up with the officer at a red light, got out of her car and waved him down.

“I approached him with caution and just told him and he was completely stunned, and I could just tell on his face like he was a little confused, and I keep telling him, and I’m like pointing, ‘There’s something up there that you might want to get,’” she said.

Des Moines Police Chief Michael McTaggart called the incident a “serious mistake,” and said the officer seen in the video was not at fault; the rifle had been left on the vehicle by the officer who used the car earlier.

“At shift change, an officer was offloading his equipment, set his rifle on top of the car, and then left and left that rifle there. Next officer came in, checked that car out, and didn’t see the rifle on the roof and drove away,” said Sgt. Paul Parizek, the department’s public information officer. “I think we’ve all had a situation in our lives when we’ve misplaced something, we’re looking for it. We walk by it two or three different times. That might help explain it. But it definitely does not excuse what happened.”

Jones said she was grateful the rifle was removed before anyone was hurt.

“Well then (my niece) said what if it falls off, and I was like, ‘Don’t say that, we’re behind him, what if it fires off or something?’”

DMPD says the incident is under internal review.

‘Fight or flight:’ Hair stylist rushes to save co-worker after vehicle crashes into salon

By Ronnie Parrillo

Click here for updates on this story

LEWISTON, Maine (WMTW) — A Maine hair stylist is being hailed as a hero after she stepped up to help a co-worker who was seriously injured when a vehicle smashed through the front of a Lewiston salon on Saturday.

The Lewiston Police Department said a Ford F-150 and a Jeep Wrangler collided as the result of an improper lane change on Lisbon Street, which caused the Jeep to spin and crash through the side of JD Cuts Family Salon.

Police said several people inside the salon were transported to local hospitals to be treated for injuries. In a Facebook post, JD Cuts said nail technician Jessica White was severely hurt, and that one of White’s clients was also injured in the crash.

Samantha La Gasse, a JD Cuts hair stylist, said she rushed to White’s aid after the nail technician wound up pinned as a result of the crash.

“My first priority was to make sure she was OK and I didn’t have any other thought. It was kind of fight or flight,” La Gasse said. “I had to push the building up off of her and take the place of a firefighter who was holding it, and kind of just be the support of that building.”

In a post on her professional Facebook page, White said she suffered breaks to several ribs and her spine, as well as a punctured lung.

La Gasse, who was one of four people in the salon when the crash happened, said she is thankful the situation was not worse.

“I was so glad I was there. Sometimes we work alone, so having someone else in that salon at the same time is probably something that was a blessing in disguise — even though not anybody wants to be a part of it,” La Gasse said.

La Gasse also raised concerns about speeding vehicles on Lisbon Street. There is a posted speed limit of 30 mph in front of the salon, but La Gasse said she often sees cars going a lot faster.

“Probably one of the reasons I was able to know what was coming through that building is because we’ve thought about it happening before,” she said.

La Gasse said the stylists are looking for a temporary place to do business, but they hope to return to the Lisbon Street storefront soon.

In a follow-up post on her professional page, White indicated she was told it will take her six to 12 weeks to recover from her injuries.

Lewiston police said the F-150 involved in the crash wound up striking a utility pole after colliding with the Jeep. The driver of the truck, 70-year-old Minot resident Lawrence Williams, was pronounced dead at the scene.
