San Luis Obispo County Warns CalFresh Recipients May See Benefit Interruptions in November Due to Federal Government Shutdown

News Channel 3-12

Below is a press release from the San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services regarding possible delays in CalFresh benefits for eligible recipients.

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. – The County of San Luis Obispo has received notice from the state and federal government that CalFresh benefits for November 2025 may be delayed if the ongoing federal government shutdown continues beyond October 23, 2025. This potential disruption could impact over 28,000 San Luis Obispo County residents who rely on CalFresh to help meet their basic food needs.

CalFresh, California’s nutrition assistance program for income-eligible households, helps families buy groceries using an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card at grocery stores and farmers markets.

“We understand how concerning this uncertainty is for families across the County,” said Devin Drake, Director for the County of San Luis Obispo Department of Social Services. “We are committed to keeping the public informed and supporting those affected in every way we can.”

CalFresh benefits for October are fully funded and available. Recipients can continue to use their existing benefits as usual, and no action is required at this time. Individuals can continue to apply for CalFresh during the shutdown. If funding to the program is not restored during the shutdown, benefits will resume when the shutdown is resolved. We expect CalFresh benefits will be issued retroactively once the federal government reopens.

The County is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available. However, until the federal government authorizes funding, November CalFresh benefits will not be issued.

At this time, CalWORKs benefits for November 2025 are not impacted by the federal shutdown.

People seeking immediate food assistance can find food near them using the SLO Food Bank’s Food Resources Map at findfoodslo.org or by calling 805-238-4664. Other resources for county residents can be accessed through the United Way of San Luis Obispo County Helpline in one of the following three ways: by calling 2-1-1, texting their ZIP code to 898-211, or visiting their website at 211slo.org.

CalFresh and CalWORKs recipients can check their EBT balance using the ebtEDGE mobile app or by calling the number on the back of their EBT card.

“Stupid Schumer Shutdown”: Rep. Simpson blasts shutdown’s impact on National Parks

News Team

WASHINGTON (KIFI) — On the 22nd day of the government shutdown, Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson joined House Republican leadership Wednesday to address the ongoing impacts on America’s national parks.

Simpson highlighted the significant, often overlooked, autumn visitation to the parks. Challenging the notion that national parks are primarily summer destinations, he cited statistics showing that 28 million people visited in October and another 24 million in November in 2024.

“I love Yellowstone in October and in November, when you get there and see the first snowfall and things like that, it’s a great time to visit our national parks,” said Simpson. “But we have families who have been planning to visit our National Parks for years, sometimes setting aside resources, that are now canceling their visits because of the impact this shutdown could have on their vacations.”

Simpson blames Democrats for prolonged shutdown

Simpson also praised the current Republican leadership team for its efforts toward restoring “regular order”—the normal, annual appropriations process. However, he said one thing is preventing that from happening — the government shutdown.

“We need to open this government back up,” Simpson insisted. While acknowledging that “many other issues… need to be debated and worked on,” he pointed out that those legislative functions are on hold. He quoted Chairman Bruce Westerman, noting that key leaders “can’t have hearings and that type of stuff when we’re shut down.”

“So we need to change that, we need to open this government back up.” Simpson concluded, blaming the Senate Minority Leader for the impasse. “Get rid of this stupid Schumer shutdown…and let us do our jobs.”

Simpson also argued that House Republicans provided democrats with a clean CR (Continuing Resolution)—a temporary funding bill free of major policy riders— which he said House Democrats ultimately rejected.

Idaho Dems Point Finger at “Trump Shutdown” Over Healthcare

In contrast to Congressman Simpson’s remarks, since the early days of the shutdown, Idaho Democrats have blamed the Republican-controlled government for the lapse in funding and highlighted potential consequences for Idaho families.

The Idaho Democratic Party argues that the funding expired “despite Republican control of the White House and both chambers of Congress,” claiming that Donald Trump and Idaho Republicans “refused to get serious about avoiding a shutdown.”

The Democratic response heavily focused on the potential impact on healthcare costs, stating that Democrats were in Washington, D.C. “ready to negotiate” to prevent health insurance premiums from doubling for 100,605 Idahoans and to stop 37,000 Idahoans from losing their health insurance entirely.

In September, Idaho Democratic Party Chair Lauren Necochea released a scathing statement, labeling the closure a “Trump Shutdown.”

“Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. With all that power, they showed they can’t lead and don’t care to,” said Necochea. “Democrats fought to protect your health care, keep premiums from doubling for more than 100,000 Idahoans, and save our rural hospitals from devastating cuts. But Mike Simpson, Russ Fulcher, Jim Risch, and Mike Crapo stood with their party and turned their backs on Idaho families,” stated Necochea.

Woman pleads guilty to felony in 2023 overdose death, sentenced to probation

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Rocheport woman was sentenced on Monday to two years of supervised probation in connection with an overdose death from 2023.

Jeanne Hovis pleaded guilty on Monday in Boone County to delivery of a controlled substance. If she violates probation, she faces a three-year prison sentence. She was originally charged with second-degree murder and drug distribution.

A case is still pending against Jonathan Shelley, who is also charged with second-degree murder and drug distribution.

Two other people were originally charged in the case, but charges were dismissed against one “because of developments in the evidence,” according to a September email from Prosecutor Roger Johnson. Another person originally charged, Nathaniel Cross, died.

Court documents in previous reporting say Shelley was with the overdose victim, whom police found lying unresponsive in a bathtub. Another statement says Hovis arranged the purchase of crack cocaine and fentanyl the night of the overdose.

Possible “suicide swarm” brings out the beekeeper

Beth Farnsworth

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – An usual sight this time of year brought out the local beekeeper.

A small beehive about the size of a softball was discovered this week, tucked into the corner of a window frame on our back patio.

Nick Wigle with Super Bee suspected it might be what he calls a “suicide swarm” or, a group kicked out of their hive. He said this is a tough time of year for bees as they’re preparing for winter.

Wigle and his partner, Julio, used a little smoke to mellow out the huddled group then went in for the catch using a small, rectangular orange box.

“We’re gonna come into our box here and what we’re looking for is to see if there’s a queen in here,” Wigle said while gently filtering bees through his fingers. “So, that’s mom, she’s just a little bit bigger. So there was a queen in there, she just fell when I played with ’em.”

Wigle said unlike yellow jackets, honey bees only sting when threatened or have something to defend.

The bees captured inside the plastic box clung to the sides, flapping their wings and emitting a scent to draw in the others.

Wigle used a gentle vacuum to collect the stragglers. Once back at his Super Bee Rescue and Removal business in the hills of Santa Barbara, he would release this small swarm together so they could strengthen before the cold weather moves in.

Idaho’s new weed whackers: the ‘Goat’ alternative for dealing with weed control

Ariel Jensen

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) — Goat Grazers are using their herds as an innovative way to help control weeds in Idaho. The Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust manages property for wildlife habitat, open space, and recreational opportunities.

For two days, they are using 70 goats to limit the amount of invasive species like cheatgrass, helping foster native plant growth, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce the risk of wildfires.

They are choosing to use goats to help them reduce the use of chemicals, which is good for the land and the animals.

“So go to a really innovative way to help us control the weeds, primarily because it allows us to limit our use of chemicals and that aligns with our mission of stewarding the land according to best practices for ecosystem and wildlife, said Carly Flandro, communications coordinator for Sagebrush  Steppe Land Trust.

This started as a pilot program, and their first trial was last spring. Steppe Land Trust says they plan to do this twice a year here on out because it has been so effective.
