Columbia man killed by officers in Harrisburg identified

Nia Hinson

EDITOR’S NOTE: The man’s hometown has been corrected.

HARRISBURG, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released the name of the man that was killed after a shooting involving Boone County Sheriff’s deputies Sunday night.

Ty B. Lewis was 31-years-old and from Columbia, according to a release from MSHP.

A press release from the sheriff’s office said the situation occurred in the 200 block of Railroad Street in Harrisburg.

According to Brian Leer of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were sent to Railroad Street around 8:45 p.m. Sunday for a man displaying a gun in a threatening manner. A press release said deputies arrived on the scene just after 9 p.m., gave the him commands, which he allegedly failed to comply with and began to move toward the deputies. Sheriff’s office personnel then shot and killed Lewis.

Friends of Lewis said he was in recovery and struggled with his mental health. Brook Cooper, a friend of Lewis, said she believes he was having a bad night and that things should have been handled differently.

“It makes me absolutely sick,” Cooper said. “They could have Tased him, they could have just given him more time to calm him down instead of just all of a sudden just shooting him down like he was nothing.”

Cooper described Lewis as a role model for people around him.

“He had people looking up to him,” Cooper said. “He just always had a smile on his face. I did not see this being the outcome for him whatsoever. He was not that person.”

Elizabeth Rose, another friend of Lewis, described him as a great person in good and bad times.

“He was a willing hand and would give the shirt of his back to anyone in need. He fought demands daily that most of us couldn’t handle, but those demands did not define him. We will only remember the good,” Rose said.

Stephanie Brockert, another friend of Lewis, described him as kind and loving.

“He just wanted better for his life but life just never seemed to go the way he needed. I know a lot of the community tried to help him,” Brockert said. “He’s really going to be missed in the recovery community.”

Cooper said she wants accountability and for the sheriff’s office to make some changes.

“I think accountability, somebody needs to lose their job and I think there needs to be more training for mental health crisis, for addiction crisis, all of it,” Cooper said. “Addiction isn’t the root of it. The root of it is the mental health.”

She also described the future Lewis was hoping for as he worked on his recovery.

“He wanted to get a good girl, have kids, have that white picket fence life and just stay clean,” Cooper said.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control is handling the investigation into the shooting at the request of the sheriff’s office. Bradley German, a spokesperson for the MSHP DDCC, said the investigation could take from weeks to months.

“Our goal is to conduct a thorough and non-biased investigation and get those facts over to the prosecutor’s office,” German said.

Leer said no deputies were hurt in the shooting. He said the sheriff’s office has no further comment regarding the department’s protocols or why other methods of deescalation were not used.

Hanaway sworn in as attorney general as Bailey leaves for Washington, D.C.

Matthew Sanders

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri’s new attorney general was sworn in behind closed doors Monday as her predecessor leaves for a new job in Washington, D.C.

Catherine Hanaway was sworn in Monday morning during a private ceremony at the Missouri Supreme Court, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office says in a news release. Gov. Mike Kehoe appointed Hanaway to fill the rest of Andrew Bailey’s term. Bailey is taking a job as co-deputy director of the FBI.

Hanaway was a Republican House Speaker from 2003-05, the only woman to hold the post. During her time in the Missouri House, Hanaway was one of the main sponsors of a 2003 concealed carry bill. The bill was initially vetoed by then-Governor Bob Holden and later overruled by the General Assembly.

She has also been a federal prosecutor.

Hanaway was also lead counsel for the Grain Belt project while she worked at law firm Husch Blackwell. Many Missouri conservatives oppose the project, which would build a wind energy line across the state.

Idaho Innovation Center lease ending September 2026

Noah Farley

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — The Bonneville County Board of Commissioners recently announced they would end its lease agreement with the Idaho Innovation Center at the end of September 2026.

Since 1988, the Idaho Innovation Center has helped small, new companies build up their business by providing them with resources.

While the Board of Commissioners expressed their gratitude to IIC, they say funding the center is no longer aligned with the county’s economic development goals.

IIC is figuring out its plan for where to move to so it can keep serving its tenants, but they are optimistic as they start this next chapter.

“What they’ve done has actually been a blessing to us, and that we’re going to be able to catapult ourselves in being much more focused in what we’re doing and being much more relevant to many, many businesses,” said IIC Executive Director Bryan Magleby.

Bonneville County Commissioner Karl Casperson says the decision of what will be put in the building once the lease ends hasn’t been made yet. He says the property could be sold and the money could be used to fund county projects, but there’s still about a year to think about it.

Blackfoot woman wins photography award at East Idaho State Fair

Ashley Chilcutt

BLACKFOOT, Idaho (KIFI) — A hobbyist photographer from Blackfoot has a lot to be proud of. Debra Hamilton was happily surprised to learn three of her photos were selected to be in the top ten for the Professional Division at the Eastern Idaho State Fair this year. One of them even took the Sweepstakes prize.

Her photography journey began just seven years ago after a friend inspired her to look for a good hobby.

“I got an entry level camera and just started learning how to use it,” Hamilton said. “I took some classes from a few people around the area, learning the exposure triangle, all of that basic stuff, and I have just found such joy.”

Hamilton says her passion for photography has inspired her to stay fit and travel more.

After getting her first passport 5 years ago, Hamilton has since gone to Paris, France, and Venice, Italy. She encourages those looking for a hobby to consider a few things.

“Maybe just sit down in a quiet place, do a little meditating about what you like. ‘What do you do? What you watch and look at?’ And that might just open something up in your life.”
