JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Two people were left without a place to sleep Thursday night after an attic fire at a Jefferson City home.

The Jefferson City Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 2200 block of Rivercrest Drive around 9:10 p.m. Thursday, according to JCFD press release.

Firefighters saw smoke coming from the roof and gable ends of the two-story home, the release states.

The attic caught fire from what JCFD called “accidental causes.” The fire department couldn’t rule out lightning as a cause because of the heavy storms that swept through the area Thursday night.

JCFD noted the attic had moderate to heavy fire damage. No one in the home was hurt, but the fire displaced two adults.

The storms that rolled through the area starting around dusk Thursday left hundreds without power. Wind damage was reported near Ashland, Bunceton, Franklin and Blackwater, according to the National Weather Service.

Seventeen firefighters were sent to the fire.
