Raising Canes in Yuma fundraising for non-profit organization

Abraham Retana

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A local restaurant is hosting a fundraiser to take kids on the trip of a lifetime.

Raising Cane’s of Yuma will be donating one dollar of every Box Combo sold on Tuesday, August 26.

Proceeds will go towards the non-profit Kidd’s Kids that takes children with life-altering conditions to Disney World.

The goal is to raise $75,000.

“We love to be part of the mission since Kidd Kraddick, he is local to Yuma, and it’s huge for us because it’s on our culture and our values,” said Chris Bolles, Raising Cane’s restaurant leader.

The fundraiser will be all day.

Raising Cane’s is located on 16th Street across the street from the Yuma Palms Mall.

Two raptors get a second chance at Yuma Wildlife Center

Adrik Vargas

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Two raptors are getting a second chance at Vida Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Yuma after being transferred from a facility in Lake Havasu that couldn’t care for them.

The birds were flown to Yuma by Major Scott Myers of the Civil Air Patrol. One raptor has a broken wing, while the other’s flight muscles aren’t fully developed yet.

Staff say Myers’ experience in handling the birds made a big difference in keeping them calm during the trip.

“We rely on the help of the community and the community has really helped us out here,” said Albert Ustaszewski of Vida Wildlife. “Scott knows how to place them in the aircraft so that they’re not disturbed that much, as far as like getting bumped around, moved around, so they came down really good.”

Thanks to the support of the Civil Air Patrol and the local community, both raptors now have a safe place to heal.

With proper care, they are expected to make a full recovery and eventually return to the wild.

IID’s Tree for All program returns this fall

Adrik Vargas

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) is giving local residents a chance to add shade, beauty, and cooler summers to their homes with its Tree for All program.

Since 2022, the initiative has planted thousands of desert-adapted shade trees across the Imperial and Coachella Valleys, helping improve air quality, reduce energy costs, and make neighborhoods more inviting.

This fall, IID will plant 1,300 trees for residential customers. To ensure fairness, participants will be selected through a lottery system, with sign-ups opening August 25 at 10 a.m. and closing September 2 at 5 p.m. One tree per household is allowed every 12 months.

“Trees provide not only the shade that I mentioned that can help lower your electric bills, they help a thriving community. The more green there is, the more peaceful things are. It’s something that benefits the environment, there are multiple benefits which is why we do this,” says Robert Schettler with IID.

Each tree is chosen to thrive in the region’s arid climate and, when planted strategically, can cut home cooling costs by up to 20%.

Winners will be notified 4-6 weeks after the sign-up period closes. For more information and to register for a tree, click here.

Gravel road in El Paso County to be paved after complaints of mud, slick driving

Scott Harrison

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — In a rare weekend paving project, crews will resurface Glider Loop, a mile-long, unpaved road that has generated complaints from neighbors over the past year about muddy and slick conditions in wet weather.

From Saturday through at least Monday, the county will place a double chip-seal surface on the road — similar to the treatment on Myers Road earlier this summer.

Crews have made several visits to the road, which is just south of Black Forest, to apply more dirt and re-grade it.

However, some neighbors say that the dirt applied by crews contained too much clay, which absorbed water, instead of sand, which provides better drainage.

One homeowner described the road condition when wet as “slicker than snot.”

While many neighbors would prefer asphalt paving, a chip seal is less expensive and should provide a significant improvement to the road.

In a chip seal, small rocks are spread atop a tar-like substance that binds together and becomes a new surface.

More than 6,000 students expected to live on MU campus this school year

Jazsmin Halliburton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

With the first day of classes in less than a week, the University of Missouri campus is alive with thousands of students moving into dorms.

MU’s Director of Housing Tyler Page estimates 2,500 students arrived on Wednesday and another 1,500 will join on Thursday, with returning students expected to trickle in before class. Added to the estimated 2,000 students who came during early move-in, the MU campus will house more than 6,000 students this school year.

Last year, MU accepted more than 6,100 freshmen, causing some strain on campus with the reports of full lecture halls and the school making a deal with Tri-Sigma sorority to use their house as temporary residential housing.

Page confirms that MU does not expect to use overflow housing this year.

A thousand volunteers will spread out across move-in locations, helping parents and students with the move-in process by unloading cars and showing students to their rooms.

“It was less than 10 minutes,” MU freshman Jack Braun said.

“In 5 minutes, actually, they had everything out of the car,” Bruan’s mom, Sandy Braun, said.

MU senior Jordan Blew and MU junior Evan Judge told ABC 17 News they were happy to help.

“Moving to college is a pretty stressful time for everyone, so just being able to be there and do everything we can, I think just helps a lot,” Blew said.

“All these people we got helping out, they’re able to take a little stress off and get everyone moved in and in a timely manner, which is great,” Judge said.

Traffic issues are to be expected, especially on College Avenue, Stadium Boulevard, North Providence Road and many streets on campus.

According to the Move-In Day map, a majority of streets will have traffic flow one-way, and there will be multiple areas available for temporary parking, such as:

Virginia Avenue Parking Garage

Turner Avenue Parking Garage

Conley Avenue Parking Garage (top level only)

AV Lot 14A and 14B.

Other parking areas based on residence hall can be found here.

The school is also holding Welcome Week, which is a series of events for new students and happens every fall the week before classes start. There are several traditions and other activities that will be open to the public as well. Some traditions include a midnight barbecue and Tiger Walk.

Welcome Week runs through Sunday, while Monday is the first day of class.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Will the House release meaningful information in the Epstein case?

Matthew Sanders

A U.S. House Committee voted this week to release redacted portions of the Epstein files.

Committee members are set to start receiving files this week. The public release will come later, and a spokesperson for the committee told reporters that members will consult with the Justice Department on the release.

The department has a questionable history when it comes to releases related to Epstein. A release to conservative influencers after President Donald Trump took office contained information already made public. Justice officials later said there was no list of Epstein clients in those files.

Do you trust the House will release meaningful Epstein information? Let us know by voting in the poll.

Bishop Diego is loaded at the skill positions as they look for bounce back season

Mike Klan

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Bishop Diego has the ‘skills to pay the bills.”

The Cardinals have loads of experience and talent at the skill positions as they look to return to the CIF-Southern Section playoffs after they just missed out last season.

Quarterback Tua Rojas has plenty of offensive weapons at his disposal including star senior running back Oscar Mauia who will certainly play college football next fall.

Fellow running back Gabe Villa along with wide receivers John Michael Flint and Sam Crawford will produce plenty of highlights.

The big question mark for the Cardinals is the inexperienced offensive and defensive line.

If they improve through game experiences than Bishop Diego should be able to compete at a high level even in the rugged Marmonte League.

Last year the Cardinals were 4-5-1 and lost a handful of close games.

Bishop Diego plays four out of their first five games on the road including Friday’s opener at Lancaster.
