Locals participate in protest in Yuma

Dillon Fuhrman

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – At least 30 people participated in a protest in Yuma Saturday morning.

The protest, organized by Yuma County Indivisible, took place on the corner of Fourth Avenue and 16th Street at 8:00 a.m.

This is part of a nationwide protest called “Rage Against the Regime,” where over 300 cities across the country held similar protests Saturday.

The protest was in regards to the Trump Administration’s policies, such as immigration, tariffs, healthcare, and more.

KYMA spoke to Darlene Erwin, the organizer of the protest, who shared her thoughts on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, funder of NPR and PBS, announcing that they will be shutting down.

“That is horrendous to me. There’s so many things that are being shut down that we’ve had all our lives. My kids watch PBS [and] informative shows. It’s not just children’s shows, but, you know…educationally, these are things that are not going to just be on regular TV,” Erwin shared.

The protest lasted until 10:00 a.m.

Volunteers help landscape a medically retired veteran’s new home

Noah Farley

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Dozens of volunteers came together August 2, 2025, to landscape a new home for medically retired veteran, Chris Byers.

“It makes someone feel blessed and loved for sure,” Byers said.

In 2012, Byers was on his third deployment in Afghanistan when he stepped on an improvised explosive device. The explosion led to Byers losing both of his legs below his knees. It also gave him a traumatic brain injury and tinnitus.

“It took about four or five years to really become used to it. After that, it’s just daily life,” Byers said.

Byers now wears prosthetics and maintains an active lifestyle, but his current home has two levels, which can cause him a lot of pain—and sometimes even worse—just to get around his own home.

“Being in prosthetics doesn’t come without its injuries,” said Byers. “If one of those injuries does come along, I’m out of my legs for a week or two, and all that housework…you fall behind.”

That’s why Byers and his family are getting a new custom-built house through Homes for Troops. The new one-story house will be specially accessible and make Byers’ daily life much easier.

“Being in a place like this, I won’t have to fall behind anymore,” Byers said. “I can just jump in my wheelchair and still accomplish everything.”

Thanks to the help of the volunteers, the new house’s once empty yards are now covered in new grass.

Byers says the new home should be finished by mid-to-late September. He’s very grateful to everyone helping make this dream of his a reality. He and his family are excited to start this new chapter in their lives.

Chiefs Host Family Fun Day at Training Camp

Rebecca Evans

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — It was more than just football at Missouri Western State University on Saturday as the Kansas City Chiefs welcomed fans to Family Fun Day at training camp, transforming the field into a festival of red, gold and smiles.

While fans packed the stands to catch a glimpse of star players during practice, kids and families enjoyed a full lineup of activities just steps away from the field.

Some traveled long distances to attend. Rebecca Mansir made the trip from California with her son as part of their annual family vacation.

“No matter where they are in the country, we’re always cheering for them,” Mansir said. “Wherever they’re playing, and we try to go to as many games as possible.”

The family zone featured a bounce house, obstacle course drills and a rock climbing wall. Interactive stations allowed fans to test their arm strength by throwing to various yard lines or see if they had the leg to make a field goal.

Jeff Evans, a longtime Chiefs fan, shared his excitement for the upcoming season.

“To the Chiefs players: Look, there’s been a lot of doubt for us this year,” Evans said. “Let’s come in and do what we know we are here to do. We’re back to the Super Bowl this year!”

Photo opportunities with cheerleaders and the team mascot, KC Wolf, kept phones snapping throughout the morning.

Quinten Colquhoun and his grandfather, Warren McElwain, came together to watch the players on the field.

“I love the Chiefs. We wanted to come last year, but tickets were sold out,” Colquhoun said. “We got tickets right when they opened. We’re gonna have a perfect season this year.”

McElwain, a fan since the late 1960s, also expressed optimism for the team’s future.

“I like Nick Bolton because he’s from the University of Missouri, and I’m from the University of Missouri,” McElwain said. “I think this is gonna be a good year for us.”

Family Fun Day remains one of the most popular events during training camp, giving fans a chance to make memories while watching their favorite team gear up for another big season.

VENTURA, Calif. – A Ventura Patrol officer arrested a suspect wanted in connection with a prior Grand Theft investigation.

The Ventura Patrol (VP) officer says they recognized the 45-year-old man from the Grand Theft investigation and attempted to initiate a traffic stop near Sherwin Avenue and Ventura Boulevard.

VP says the suspect failed to yield and fled quickly and recklessly on their motorcycle. Officers say they did not pursue the suspect initially due to the danger posed.

Officers say the motor officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, and has since recovered fully.

The suspect was arrested for the prior Grand Theft and faces additional felony and misdemeanor charges, including felony evading, resisting arrest causing injury, hit and run, and prowling. He is currently booked at the Ventura County Jail.
