Ashford Place development plan raises neighborhood concerns

Keriana Gamboa

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Homeowners living near the site of a planned subdivision in east Columbia are raising concerns about traffic and other issues.

Troy Miller Properties LLC is asking the City of Columbia to approve a development plan for 77 new housing units on 24.13 acres off East Broadway near the Brooks subdivision.

The Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously decided to table the item at a meeting on Thursday night.

Brooks resident Aleece Rhinehart told ABC 17 News the property owner had expressed interest in further discussions with neighbors about the project. However, she noted that no meetings have been scheduled, and the community remains uncertain about how their concerns will be addressed.

Community members submitted more than 90 pages of comments about the project, according to correspondence provided by the city.

The proposed development will be located at the north end of Sagemoor Drive. Each building in the proposed development will have up to three housing units.

Traffic appears to be the primary concern, particularly on the neighborhood’s two main roads. In response to these concerns, the City of Columbia plans to extend El Chaparral Avenue as part of the new development. Additionally, Columbia Public Works will consider traffic calming devices on Hoylake Drive to help address safety concerns.

Brooks resident Holly McCoy says her main concerns center on Sagemoor Street, where she lives.

“My concern is the use of the street in front of our house as the main entrance into a high density living arrangement. These are single-family dwellings, and  I would,  you know,  have that concern of high traffic on this road,” McCoy said.

City Planner David Kunz said the city conducted a 2017 traffic study that evaluated developments larger than the one currently proposed and found no significant impact on Sagemoor Street.

The first construction phase will include 23 buildings; the second phase will be 36 buildings; and the third phase will include 18 residential buildings and improvements to Sagemoor and El Chaparral Avenue. Each building will have three units included.

Steve Smith and his wife live next to the proposed development on the north end of the street. Steve said they are a part of their neighborhood’s homeowners association, and are also concerned about the long-term effects on property values.

“Our properties are held to a certain standard to be maintained, and not knowing if the new development going in next door is going to be held to that same standard, we sort of wonder how that’s going to affect our property values,” Smith said.

ABC 17 News has reached out to the developers for comment.

Alan Parsons Donates Signed Guitar to Support One805LIVE! for First Responders

Ryder Christ

MONTECITO, Calif. – Legendary music producer Alan Parsons is helping lead preparations for the One805LIVE! benefit concert supporting first responders and mental health services—and he’s donating a signed acoustic guitar as part of a giveaway to raise awareness for the cause.

Parsons, known for his iconic work on Abbey Road, Let It Be, and The Dark Side of the Moon, is a longtime Santa Barbara County resident and founding board member of the One805 nonprofit. Though originally from the U.K., Parsons has lived in the area for two decades and now calls the community home.

“It’s just a real privilege to be working with these people and helping the first responders,” Parsons said. “Dealing with mental health among first responders—that’s another very important thing.”

The benefit concert is set for September 20 at actor Kevin Costner’s estate in Montecito and will feature performances by a variety of artists including Trisha Yearwood, The Fray, Sammy Hagar, and John Kay of Steppenwolf.

Parsons is serving as the music supervisor for the event, curating the artist lineup for the all-star benefit concert.

“I’m the one responsible for probably putting the order of play for each of the acts and how long they get,” he said. “There’s a lot of artists to squeeze in a single afternoon.”

He described the behind-the-scenes work as complex, requiring careful coordination of shared instruments, stage equipment, and rehearsal schedules. “There will be a bit of cross-pollinization between the artists,” Parsons said.

All performers are volunteering their time. A large team is also working behind the scenes to coordinate stage production, hospitality, and logistics.

“It’s tremendously well organized,” he said. “I’m just there to help out with the musical contributions.”

Parsons said he’s proud to support a cause that resonates deeply with the community he now considers his own.

To further raise awareness, One805 has partnered with NewsChannel to launch a guitar giveaway contest. Parsons has signed the acoustic guitar, and the winner will also receive two tickets to attend the One805LIVE! concert, which raises funds for mental health programs, resiliency training, and essential equipment for local fire, police, and sheriff’s departments.

Colorado Springs DEA executes drug raid, alleged Mexican cartel members distributing drugs

Mackenzie Stafford

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – On Thursday, a spokesperson with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confirmed two search warrants were executed at the Village East Apartments on Hathaway Drive in Colorado Springs.

The DEA says the raid happened Thursday morning. They allege the apartments were being used to distribute drugs by Mexican cartel members.

During the execution of the warrants, agents say they seized a handgun, fentanyl pills, methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin, in addition to a large amount of money.

The agency says 5 individuals were arrested inside the apartments for immigration violations and transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The DEA says it is committed to removing individuals who are “poisoning our community with deadly drugs.”

The DEA tells KRDO13 they can not confirm if the 5 people taken into custody are cartel members, as they say it’s an ongoing investigation.

KRDO13 reached out to the Village East Apartments, who said they had no comment.

A coworker of one of the men who’s now in ICE custody tells KRDO13 the man is a hard worker trying to grow his family.

Video of the raid shows masked agents on the ground and some in the back of a truck.

KRDO13 spoke with a neighbor who asked not to use her name, since she has family who fear for their safety. She said that around 7 a.m. Thursday morning, she heard the sound of flash bangs.

“I heard really loud bangs. We thought it was fireworks. And we came out of our apartment to see a heavy ICE presence,” explained the neighbor.

She says as a mother, watching what happened this morning was incredibly hard.

“They put the mom on the ground, put her in shackles in front of her children. Children were screaming. It broke my heart to have to deal with that. Because, like I said, some of my family’s not from here. So, yeah, it’s really hard,” she recounted.

The Village East Apartments are directly across the street from Christa McAuliffe Elementary School.

“My son went to the school across the street for his whole school life. He’s in second grade now, so going on three years. It’s quiet over here. Everybody minds their business. They go to work, they take care of their kids, and we come home. Never. Not one time did I ever think that there was anything like that going on here,” she explained.

The neighbor tells KRDO13 the raid was very unsettling.

“I was definitely scared. Having family that’s not from the U.S., it’s definitely scary to have to call family, let them know not to come visit me. Because I’m afraid that something’s going to happen to them,” she shared.

Bend Police issue scam alert amid uptick in costly cases, offer tips to help you avoid becoming a victim

Barney Lerten

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Bend Police Department alerted community members Thursday of a recent uptick in scams they are seeing frequently offering tips,in an effort to help you avoid becoming a victim.

“So far in 2025, we have received at least 243 calls reporting scams and fraud attempts,” Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said in a news release. “In July alone, 20 people reported to the Bend Police Department that they had lost a combined $107,905 in scams, in amounts ranging from $25 to $26,000.”

The types of scams can vary, but over the past couple of months, we’ve seen multiple incidents in which the victim lost tens of thousands of dollars through similar methods.

Here are just a few examples:

The victim received a call purporting to be from Wells Fargo. The caller told the victim there was an issue with her account, then sent an Uber to the victim’s home to provide transportation to the bank. The victim was directed to withdraw $12,000 and then took a second Uber to a Chase Bank to deposit the money in separate ATM deposits to unknown accounts. The caller then provided the victim with a third Uber to transport the victim back home.

The victim received a call purporting to be from U.S. Bank. The caller told the victim that someone had attempted to open a Zelle account with the victim’s phone number. The victim was directed to withdraw $2,000 in cash and use that money to buy MoneyPak Green Dot cards, then repeat the transaction at a different grocery store with $1,500 in cash. The victim then provided the numbers on the back of the cards to the caller.

The victim received an email from a scammer regarding a fake purchase on eBay. The victim called a number listed in the email and spoke with a person who directed the victim to go to a Bitcoin ATM and make multiple deposits totaling $32,000. The scammer was able to gain access to the victim’s computer through a screen-sharing program, and the scammer may also have shut down the victim’s bank account and attempted to make purchases on multiple credit cards.

Many of our most recently reported scams have featured a victim receiving either an email or a phone call about a problem – an issue with a bank account, a fraudulent charge, a warrant or a missed jury duty call.

The scammer then rushes the victim – they need to act quickly to solve the issue by transferring money, giving the scammer gift cards, or taking money out of their bank account and putting it elsewhere.

Often, the scammer stays on the phone with the victim the entire time the scam is taking place. By the time the victim figures out it’s a scam, they’re often too late and lose a lot of money.

Here are a few reminders to help prevent these scammers from getting hold of your hard-earned money:

Law enforcement and other federal agencies will never call or email you demanding money. Banks will not ask you to wire money as part of a fraud investigation. Banks will not tell you to remove money from their accounts and place it in another bank.

Do not transfer money into Bitcoin ATMs or online apps at the behest of any agency or business.

Legitimate groups do not request payment in the form of gift cards.

Not sure if it’s a scam? Trust your gut. Hang up, don’t reply to the email. Call your banking institution and check that the call or email is legitimate. Don’t trust caller ID – a scammer can fake a number they’re calling from. You can also Google the number you’re receiving a call from. Often, other people who have been scammed will post to the internet identifying the phone number as a scammer.

Have you been the victim of a scam? Call non-emergency dispatch at 541-693-6911 to report it and file a complaint with the FBI at www.IC3.gov

St. Louis Encephalitis virus found in three positive mosquito samples in Oasis

Jesus Reyes

OASIS, Calif. (KESQ) – Three mosquito samples from the Oasis community tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis virus, the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District said today.

“Detections like this should serve as a reminder to wear insect repellent when outdoors,” Public Information Manager for the district Robert Gaona said. “Repellent with at least 30% of an active ingredient like DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535.”

The samples were collected near the intersections of Johnson Street and Avenue 81, Avenue 82 and Avenue 84.

St. Louis Encephalitis virus spreads when a female mosquito bites an infected bird and that mosquito can become a carrier to transmit to people, the district said. If a person becomes infected, symptoms could develop with fever, headaches, body aches and in some rare cases, death.

There is no human vaccine for a mosquito-borne virus.

With the addition of the three positive samples from Oasis, the number of positive mosquito-borne viruses in the Coachella Valley increased to five this year. However, no human cases of any mosquito-related viruses were reported in the state.

The agency urges the public to take precaution to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, which includes to dump and drain standing water around homes where the insects can breed and to use EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, especially at dawn or dusk. In addition, to ensure any window and door screen were in good repair and to report any mosquito problems to the district.

District officials said they will deploy additional technicians to the affected areas to conduct treatment using truck-mounted applications in order to prevent further spread of the virus and reduce  mosquito populations.

Two fires in one day prompt fire officials to urge caution in Jefferson County

News Team

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Idaho (KIFI) — Central Fire District firefighters, along with several local fire departments, responded to two separate fires in Jefferson County yesterday, August 6, as extreme fire danger continues to threaten southeast Idaho.

The first fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of County Line Road and 3400 East. A spark from farm equipment ignited a grain field, and within a short time, the fire had spread to 4 acres. Following a coordinated response from Central Fire District units from Lewisville, Menan, and Rigby, along with support from Ucon, Bonneville County, and Roberts Fire departments, the fire was quickly contained. No injuries were reported, and firefighters successfully protected three structures that were threatened by the blaze.

Later that afternoon, at about 3:30 p.m., crews were called to a second fire in the Ririe area. This fire started when a small ember escaped from a burn barrel on the 4600 block of 250 North, igniting several nearby trees.

“Several trees had to be cut down to fully extinguish the flames and prevent further spread,” the Central Fire District said in a release. “Again, thanks to swift action, the fire was quickly brought under control with no reported injuries.”

These two fires highlight the ongoing risks in the region. Fire Chief Nic White stressed the importance of following the current burn ban, which remains in effect for the safety of local communities and to prevent strain on emergency resources.

“With today’s fires, we were fortunate that our crews responded quickly and that no lives or property were lost,” said Chief White. “But these events show how quickly fires can start and spread. Please take the burn ban seriously.”

Missouri governor open to redrawing Missouri congressional seats, Black Caucus pushes back

Mitchell Kaminski

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri Legislative Black Caucus strongly condemned President Donald Trump’s plan to redraw congressional boundaries during a press conference on Thursday.

Missouri is one of several states where Republican lawmakers are pushing for new congressional maps, aimed at gaining an edge in the U.S House of Representatives during the mid-term elections. With Republicans holding a slim 219–212 majority, both parties view the U.S. House as a battleground heading into the 2026 elections.

“This is a disgusting, shameful, power-grab that has never, ever been seen in modern American politics,” Missouri Legislative Black Caucus Chair Michael Johnson (D-Kansas City) said.

Gov. Mike Kehoe took questions from reporters after speaking during the opening of the Missouri State Fair on Thursday morning in Sedalia. A Kehoe spokesperson told ABC 17 News this week the governor has had several conversations with the Trump administration about Missouri redistricting.

“As I’ve told everybody, the way the maps have been drawn have been talked about since we drew them or the House and Senate drew them four years ago,” Kehoe said of the state’s current House district, which were drawn after the 2020 census. “Nobody’s been exactly happy with it, so looking at how that might be more compact and contingent, making sure that America’s voice matches Missouri’s values, and Missouri is a great conservative, Christian-value state, and I think we’re always going to try to make sure that we support [Republican House Speak Mike Johnson] and that we don’t have an alternative.”

State lawmakers traditionally redraw district maps based on census data every 10 years. The last redistricting took place in 2022. Because of this, state Rep. David Tyson Smith (D-Columbia) called the gerrymandering efforts unconstitutional.

“It is shameful that this idea would be floated,” Tyson Smith said. “This is not constitutional.  The Missouri Constitution does not allow for redistricting unless there is an immediate census, and that has not happened.  This is nothing but a power grab, a power grab by the Trump administration to maintain control of the House.”

Missouri Democrats contend the Trump administration feels threatened by a surge of rallies across Missouri and the rest of the country.

Missouri currently has six Republicans and two Democrats in the U.S. House. While no redrawn map has been released, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Kansas City), who has served since 2005,  would likely be the main target. Cleaver’s district currently has a high population of black and Hispanic residents.

“Congressman Clever does an excellent job working across the aisle, so for his seat to be under attack like it is, is an offense not only to him but to our community because he’s effective,” state Rep. Yolonda Fountain-Henderson (D-St. Louis) said.

Tyson Smith claimed Trump has no plans to leave the White House, citing newly released merchandise suggesting he intends to remain in power through 2028.

“This is his attempt to keep control of the House because that is the only body that can stop them at this point. We cannot allow him to do that, and this power grab is unconscionable. This is outrageous. We haven’t seen these times in the last 50, 60, 70 years of America,” Smith said.

Democratic-led states like California have responded by threatening to conduct their own redistricting. When asked if Missouri Democrats would consider the same tactic if they controlled the Legislature, they said yes. However, they currently lack the votes to block the plan. Democrats are instead aiming to mobilize voters statewide and potentially challenge the move in court.

State Rep. Marlon Anderson (D-St. Louis) accused Republicans of undermining the will of Missourians with their redistricting efforts. Anderson made references to the Missouri GOP rolling back voter-approved sick leave and attempts to challenge the legal status of abortion, which was also approved by voters.

“The Republicans of this state, time after time, undermine the will of Missourians. From Amendment 3 to Prop A and now the Missouri Congressional maps, the majority of whom believe that their voices are larger than Missouri. This is yet another attempt to further their agenda, while completely disregarding the will of Missouri,” Anderson said.

Kehoe said Thursday that he’s interested in “making sure America’s voice matches Missouri’s values” in Congress as the debate continues over whether Republican-heavy states should redraw their U.S. House maps. Kehoe claimed Democrats do not represent Missouri’s values.

The Trump administration has spoken with leaders in red states about redrawing their congressional districts to add more Republican-friendly seats to the U.S. House.

Several Missouri Republicans have expressed support for redrawing the maps, including state Senate leaders and the Missouri Freedom Caucus. However, Johnson claims not every Republican is on board.

“There are some Republicans, some of our  Republican colleagues in this building,  that don’t want to see this happen,” Johnson said. “And I know that for a fact.”
