Alissa Orozco

VENTURA, Calif. – A Ventura man was booked on multiple charges in a violent sexual assault that reportedly took place near Thille Park earlier in the month.

Ventura County District Attorney, Erik Nasarenko, announced Thursday Kevin Guerrero of Ventura has been charged with forcible rape and kidnapping to commit rape on August 26th.

On August 11th, 2025, a sexual assault of woman was reported near Thrille Park in Ventura. Guerrero is accused of grabbing the woman, who was walking westbound, off the sidewalk and into nearby bushes. Allegedly, Guerrero covered the woman’s mouth as she attempted to call out for help.

Guerrero fled the scene, but was later arrested by police on August 20th.

He made his first court appearance on Tuesday, and his arraignment will continue to September 22, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 13 of the Ventura County Superior Court.

He is being held in custody with no bail and facing 85 years to life in state prison if convicted on all charges.

Newsom announces CHP teams to be deployed across California

City News Service

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KESQ) – Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that California Highway Patrol crime suppression teams will be deployed to major cities and regions across the state — where they will work with local law enforcement agencies as part of ongoing efforts to reduce crime statewide.

Newsom said the deployments are an expansion of CHP efforts that the governor said have led to significant crime reductions over the past year in Bakersfield, Oakland and San Bernardino.

The governor’s announcement highlighted that these new enforcement efforts will take place in San Diego, as well as Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, Central Valley, Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area regions.

Crime suppression teams “will saturate high-crime areas, target repeat offenders and seize illicit weapons and narcotics,” the governor’s office said.

“When the state and local communities work together strategically, public safety improves,” Newsom said in a statement. “While the Trump administration undermines cities, California is partnering with them — and delivering real results. With these new deployments, we’re doubling down on these partnerships to build on progress and keep driving crime down.”

The governor’s office said the crime suppression teams will:   — Identify and suppress criminal activity in high-crime areas through data and intelligence-led policing;   — Conduct proactive enforcement operations designed to deter and disrupt organized crime;   — Provide increased CHP visibility and presence in communities most impacted by crime;   — Support local law enforcement by sharing intelligence, coordinatingenforcement, and assisting with investigations; and   — Maintain strict accountability through structured leadership, clear reporting and operational oversight.

“These crime suppression teams will provide critical support to our local partners by focusing on crime where it happens most,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. “By combining resources, intelligence, and personnel, we can better disrupt criminal activity and strengthen the safety and security ofcommunities across California.”

“We’ll Never Call This Way”: ISP warns of scammers spoofing official numbers

News Release

The following is a scam alert news release from the Idaho State Police:

IDAHO — The Idaho State Police (ISP) is warning the public about a scam in which callers are spoofing ISP phone numbers, making it appear the calls are coming from official ISP dispatch centers. These calls are not from the ISP.

In recent days, ISP received multiple reports of individuals receiving suspicious calls from numbers that appeared to be from ISP. In one disturbing incident, a parent answered back-to-back calls from a man claiming to be a medic and insinuated that their child was in distress. He requested the child’s name, and the parents heard the sound of crying in the background. Thankfully, the child was safe at school, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the manipulative tactics employed by scammers.

“These calls are not coming from the Idaho State Police. This scam is designed to play on the hearts of potential victims and undermines trust in first responders,” Captain Tyler Jussel of the ISP Regional Communications Center said. “By spoofing first responders and dispatch centers, these scammers try to gain credibility in their deception. We want the public to know that ISP will never call in this manner.”

Protect yourself against spoofing scams:

Don’t provide personal information such as names, addresses, or account details over the phone unless you are certain of who is calling.

Hang up immediately if the call seems suspicious.

Verify before trusting – if a caller claims to be law enforcement, hang up and call the agency back directly using their publicly listed phone number.

Scammers thrive on fear and urgency. Take a moment to pause and verify before responding to any call. If you receive a suspicious call, don’t hesitate to hang up and report it to your local law enforcement agency and the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Your caution could be the difference between falling victim to a scam and staying safe.

ITD to host Open House for US-20 improvements

News Team

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — The Idaho Transportation Department is hosting an open house on Thursday, September 4, to discuss proposed improvements to U.S. Highway 20 from Idaho Falls to Arco. The meeting will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Snake River Event Center at the Shilo Inn, located at 780 Lindsay Blvd in Idaho Falls.

The highway, first built in the 1950s, serves as an important roadway for the over 6,000 Idahoans who work at the Idaho National Laboratory. However, in order to continue to serve motorists for years to come, ITD says the roadway requires “robust improvements.”

“We know this route needs improvements and have been very focused on working towards them,” ITD District Engineer Jason Minzghor said. “We’re excited to get public input on the design and see construction happen in the very near future.”

Proposed designs aim to boost safety and capacity by widening the road to two lanes in each direction, starting in Idaho Falls and heading west. This expansion will make the route safer for everyone, including freight, agricultural, and commuter traffic, by providing more passing opportunities and improving visibility.

The open house will serve as an opportunity for the public to review the designs, learn about project timelines, and see how ITD plans to reduce construction impacts. Construction could begin as early as next summer with additional funding.

If you can’t make it in person, you can view the materials and submit comments online from September 4–18 at us20arcotoif.com.

Football fans face road construction on first Mizzou game day

Euphenie Andre

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Editor’s Note: A correction has been made about the closures on Interstate 70.

Thousands of fans traveled to Columbia on Saturday for the Missouri Tigers’ first football game of the season, packing Faurot Field and creating heavy traffic around campus hours before the 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

By mid-afternoon, traffic congestion was building along Stadium Boulevard and Carrie Francike Drive as parking lots filled and tailgates got underway.

Some drivers said the construction along Interstate 70 made the trip especially difficult.

“I came from Canton, Missouri. I drove I-70. The construction is awful,” said Keegan Birck, a fan traveling in for the game.

Even short trips from nearby communities required adjustments.

“Coming up 63, we made a plan to take an exit on Grindstone instead of going past Stadium,” said Trey Walz.

Others chose to avoid the congestion entirely by walking to the stadium.

“The traffic’s been kind of crazy,” said Drew Russell. “We wanted to walk through all the tailgating and really get a feel for the game.”

The Missouri Department of Transportation is encouraging fans to plan their trips carefully on Game Days, particularly while several construction projects continue along I-70.

“We encourage football fans and motorists to plan their travels ahead of time, leave early and allow for extra time, drive the speed limit and pay attention in work zones,” MoDOT said in a statement. “Work zone speeds are reduced to 55 mph and lanes are narrowed in some areas.”

MoDOT didn’t close any lanes on westbound I-70 between St. Louis and Columbia until kick-off. The only planned eastbound closure was near Warrenton overnight, which could have affected fans heading back to St. Louis after the game.

On the Kansas City side, impacts are minimal, with no detours in place, though narrowed lanes and reduced speeds will remain in work zones.

Officials encourage drivers to allow for extra time both before and after the game, as well as throughout the holiday weekend.

Missouri traffic deaths trending down for third year

Madison Stuerman

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

For the third year in a row, the Missouri Department of Transportation reports that traffic deaths across the state are down.

MoDOT preliminary data shows that from Jan. 1 to Aug. 24, 2025, there have been 577 people killed in crashes. This is down from 589 reported during the same time period last year.

The agency said in a release that while this number is encouraging, it is still too early to know if the trend will last until the end of the year.

“Gains on this front are incredibly encouraging, but we have a long way to go to achieve our ultimate goal, especially as the second half of the year typically presents its own challenges,” State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer Jon Nelson said in a release.

MoDOT says there have been more deaths reported during the second half of the year. This is due to road construction, school-related activities, shorter days, holiday travel and bad weather.

344 people died in traffic crashes after Sept. 1 in 2024, which is down from 364 during the same time period in 2023.

Officials break ground for new nuclear reactor at INL

Noah Farley

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — Ground was broken at Idaho National Laboratory for a new experimental nuclear reactor Thursday, August 28.

INL is working with Aalo Atomics, a company that mass-manufactures nuclear plants. Representatives from both companies broke ground together for Aalo-X, “the nuclear industry’s first experimental extra modular nuclear reactor (XMR).”

“We’re getting back into a new nuclear age,” said INL Director, John Wagner. “Multiple companies like Aalo, their first groundbreaking, are paving the way toward to this new nuclear age where we will see a lot of growth in clean nuclear power for the nation. And this is particularly important in terms of the energy demand growth that we’re experiencing as a nation and across the world.”

Aalo Atomics was recently chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy to participate in President Trump’s Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program.

The new nuclear reactor is planned to start operating by July 4, 2026.
