‘Poorly Drawn Pets’ fundraiser brings support to local shelter

Luis Avila

THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) – As animal shelters across the country continue to grapple with overcrowding, shrinking budgets, and growing demands, Animal Samaritans is turning to creativity — and humor — to help keep lifesaving programs alive.

‘Poorly Drawn Pets’ is back… and worse than ever. For a $20 donation, residents receive a one-of-a-kind portrait of their pet – intentionally drawn with more heart than artistic skill.

Behind the laughs is a serious mission. Every dollar raised through the campaign goes toward the shelter’s vital programs.

“The funds that we raise through out ‘Poorly Drawn Pets’ fundraiser all goes towards Animal Samaritans’ life-saving program. We have our no kill shelter, it’s going to help care for the animals that come through our shelter, we have programs for our veterinary clinics that provide medical care that’s needed for people’s pets and maybe they can’t afford it.”

Valerie Kattz, Animal Samaritans development & public relations

With shelters across the country overcrowded, officials hope this creative initiative will raise both awareness and support.

“That is a big problem for shelters throughout the country and definitely a problem here in the desert. What we do is we have a dedicated staff member that works with some of the high risk shelters and her job is to get animals out of the shelter before something happens to them and get them into the safety of no-kill shelters like ours.”

Valerie Kattz, Animal Samaritans development & public relations

The fundraiser highlights a serious cause in a lighthearted way, and proves that sometimes doing good doesn’t have to be picture perfect.

US-20 delays and slower speeds starting next week for INL paving operations, says ITD

News Release

The following is a press release from the Idaho Transportation Department:

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — The Idaho Transportation Department is partnering with the Idaho National Laboratory to alert motorists of changes to their commute beginning next week.

Starting Monday, paving operations within the INL site will limit usual turning movements at the Puzzle, the junction of US-20, US-26, and INL. During morning and overnight hours, traffic will be able to make right turns only off US-20 into the site.

From 4 to 6:30 p.m., traffic at the Puzzle will be restricted to outbound only movement, with no inbound turns allowed.

Speed will be reduced to 50 mph on US-20 near and through the Puzzle while this work is completed.

Both inbound and outbound site traffic will be able to access US-20 from an alternative route at West Portland Avenue, Gate Three, one mile west of the Puzzle. No dedicated turning lane exists on US-20 at this intersection, so motorists are urged to be alert and slow down.

Flaggers will be present as needed when INL paving work is near the intersections of US-20 or US-26. Traffic control signs and lower speed limits will not be in effect when work is not actively ongoing along these roadways.

INL paving operations are expected to be complete and traffic running as usual by late September.

INL employees should refer to internal communication regarding effects to their commute on roads within the site. Effects to US-20 and US-26 will be noted on the Idaho 511 app and at 511.idaho.gov.

Viewers contact KRDO 13’s ‘The Road Warrior’ about paving needs on road near current project in Falcon

Scott Harrison

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — Many drivers who shop at the Walmart in Falcon are glad that the road behind it, Foxtail Meadow Lane, is currently being repaved, and that the Rolling Thunder Way intersection on the south end is part of that project.

However, some drivers are unhappy that all of the mile-long stretch of Rolling Thunder, between Meridian Road and Golden Sage Road, has not been repaved.

Since KRDO 13’s The Road Warrior reported a week ago on the start of the Foxtail Meadow project, several viewers have sent email messages expressing frustration, saying that county officials promised five years ago that Rolling Thunder would be repaved.

“It’s been bad for a long time, since I moved here 19 years ago,” said Ross Isaacson, who lives in neighboring Peyton but noted that shopping at Walmart is his only reason for driving on Rolling Thunder.

Isaacson gives the county credit for occasionally filling potholes there.

“My wife has driven down it and banged her head on the roof because she hit something,” he recalled. “They just spot-patch it, and then they’re done. They leave it for about three years, and then we don’t see anything. The school buses used it as a shortcut to the bus barn, but had to stop because it injured students.”

The Road Warrior drove the length of Rolling Thunder and saw many of the same conditions that led to the resurfacing of Foxtail Meadow.

When told of the concerns, a county spokesman confirmed that officials are considering whether to include Rolling Thunder on next year’s repaving list.

“That list is budget-dependent, but will likely be approved no later than the first quarter of 2026,” he said.

Isaacson said that he can’t wait to see it happen.

“If it doesn’t, I don’t know what we’ll do out here,” he said.

Meanwhile, crews have finished removing the old asphalt in the Foxtail Meadow project; they’ll grind up the material and use it as part of the new base on which to apply new asphalt.

The project could be finished by next weekend, weather permitting.

Powerhouse Community Development hands out backpacks as Missouri families face rising school supply costs

Mitchell Kaminski

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

With the first day of school just weeks away, many families are bracing for rising school supply prices.

On Friday, Unity in the Community and Powerhouse Community Development teamed up to help ease that burden by handing out hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies to help students get ready for the new school year.

According to the Yale Budget Lab, new tariffs of 10-40% on imports could drive shoe prices up 40% and clothing up 38%. The threat of increased prices has also drawn shoppers to stores quicker for back-to-school supplies.

The National Retail Federation reports nearly 70% of shoppers started back-to-school shopping as early as July, up from 55% last year.

After serving 1,800 people last year, Powerhouse Community Development and Unity in the Community moved the start time of their annual back-to-school event to noon, responding to long lines that formed well before the 2 p.m. kickoff last year. But the earlier start times still drew large crowds.

“When we got here at 8 am, they were actually already standing out here before then,” Erika Budford, the executive administrator of Powerhouse Community Development, said. “We started at 12 (p.m.) and by 1:40 we had already given out 1,400 backpacks.”

By the end of the day, Powerhouse had handed out nearly 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies.

“I’m definitely here for the free backpack and school supplies that they’re handing out.” Molly Burrows, a parent with multiple children in Columbia Public Schools, said. “Both my kids are in need of backpacks.”

The event also featured more than 30 community resource agencies, including free sports physicals, haircuts and dental screenings.

“I’ve actually learned a lot of different programs around Columbia that I didn’t even know existed that help people for free. So I’m super excited that I was able to make it out here today,” Burrows said.

Powerhouse budgets year-round to buy these supplies and also depends on donations to make it happen.

“We know that they may just go with a notebook and pencil to high school but we really try to make sure we get them at least 10-to-12 items in their backpacks when they’re starting out,” Buford said. “Prices are going up, and then we just have everyday families that this actually helps them, whether it’s needing new clothing, new shoes.”

“I love what Powerhouse has been doing. It’s monumental in the community,” said Lorenzo Powell, who is a case manager at Powerhouse.

Many companies ordered supplies ahead of the tariffs to try to offset rising costs, but retailers like Target and Walmart are already posting signs warning shoppers that higher prices on back-to-school essentials are just weeks away.

Powerhouse will be holding several other back-to-school events ahead of the school year. There will be a back-to-school immunization clinic from 9 .m.-noon Saturday at the Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services building on Worley Street.

Another event will be on Aug. 17 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Armory in Columbia. Powerhouse will hold an additional event in Marshall, Missouri, from noon-3 p.m. at the CL Stephenson multipurpose building on Aug. 14.
