90-acre Lava Trail Fire contained; Elderly camper injured with minor burns

News Team

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — A wildfire west of Idaho Falls, known as the Lava Trail Fire, has been successfully contained after burning over 90 acres. The blaze started on Wednesday, August 6, near the lava trail inlet south of Highway 20. The Idaho Falls Police Department (IFPD) reports that the fire was sparked by two individuals who were target shooting in the area.

Emergency Response and Containment

The Idaho Falls Fire Department (IFFD) was the first to respond to the scene. Due to the rapid spread of the fire, they requested help from several partner agencies, including the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the Ammon Fire Department. The BLM took command of the unified response, and air support was activated to drop retardant and contain the fire’s spread.

Fueled by strong winds, the fire moved quickly to the north and east. Fire crews worked diligently and were able to halt the blaze by 10:30 p.m. that night. The fire is now considered fully controlled. The BLM remained on the scene overnight Wednesday to monitor conditions and ensure the fire was completely out.

Camper Injured While Escaping Fire

During the incident, an 81-year-old man who was camping in the area sustained minor burns to both of his arms while trying to escape the flames. A bystander initially tried to warn the man about the advancing fire, but had to retreat for their own safety. IFFD personnel witnessed the event, provided immediate medical aid, and arranged for the man to be transported to meet with emergency medical services (EMS). Both the camper and the man’s pickup truck were destroyed in the fire.

Local, woman-owned mobile coffee stand brewing up community flavor

Rebecca Evans

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — Coffee lovers in St. Joseph and Savannah now have a new stop for their morning pick-me-up: Moony’s Coffee, a woman-owned mobile coffee stand serving fresh brews and local pride.

Every cup of coffee is made using high-quality beans from Mokaska Coffee Co., a St. Joseph-based roaster known for bold flavor and a tradition of excellence dating back to 1884.

But the flavor goes deeper than the beans. Moony’s crafts all syrups and specialty flavors in-house as well.

Co-founders Liz Generaux and Maggie Johnson launched Moony’s Coffee about a year ago with one mission: to bring exceptional, on-the-go coffee to their community. The mobile stand allows customers to enjoy quality beverages from early morning coffees, to tea and lemonades aimed at getting beverage lovers through the day.

“It feels surreal sometimes,” said co-owner Johnson, ” I look at everything that we have now and the progress from last September to now is insane. I feel really grateful that we’ve had so many friends and family help us to make this possible and put it together, and then all the support online and from people that I never thought would have done that for us is insane.”

They opened on September 20th last year at Savannah’s Homecoming, beginning with their table and tent. Then, they acquired the trailer in February and opened it in April, coinciding with Easter.

Moony’s typically operates from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays.

To keep up with their schedule and locations, customers are encouraged to follow the stand’s Facebook page, where updates, seasonal specials and event details are posted.

In addition to regular service, Moony’s Coffee is available for bookings, including community events, corporate functions and private celebrations. Interested hosts can reach out via Facebook to bring a touch of local flavor to their next gathering.

Moony’s Coffee is more than just a drink stop; it’s a celebration of small business, local connections, and hometown pride.

Indio discusses next steps, what residents need to know for recent 911 outages

Kendall Flynn

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – The City of Indio has been faced with 911 lines down multiple times in the last couple of weeks. The Indio Police Department confirmed Friday morning the lines were down starting around 6 a.m.

According to Indio PD it is unknown when the lines will be back up. This comes after another outage within the City on July 24 and June 9.

The Indio PD dispatch team said the outages are coming from the state carrier Frontier, where the fiber lines are being but by vandals. The Indio Dispatch Supervisor, Helen Polanco, said the department see around two fiber cuts per month, and are looking to the state for a solution.

“We have a meeting with the state COES, which is California Office of Emergency Services, to try to find a solution for this and maybe find another carrier because this is unacceptable,” Polanco said.

Indio said the outage is particularly concerning because residents use 911 as a direct line to the department. If residents call 911, it does not ring. They will then be called by another department and transferred. While it is a solution, Indio said it causes a delay in service.

They ask all residents to call the non-emergency lines for a direct call to Indio PD. For now, officials are unsure of when the outage will end or when they find a long-term solution.

Stay with News Channel 3 to hear from city officials on what is being done to find a solution to this issue and what residents need to know.

To reach emergency services during a 911 outage, reach out to the non-emergency lines.
