Over 200 cars will be hoping to qualify for more racing on Sunday, and some drivers actually brought more than one vehicle to register, which gives them a better chance at qualifying for Sunday action.

AWC’s “The Cubby” set to host month-long food drive

Paul Vozzella

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Arizona Western College (AWC) is doing what it can to help local college students with a food drive going from August 11 to September 8.

“The Cubby” is running the food drive with a goal to collect 1,000 items to ensure all students can get the proper nutrition they need to bask in academic success.

“There’s a lot of students that are in need and we want to be able to support the students and not make hunger something that they have to deal with, or, a challenge that gets in the way of them thriving here on campus, in their classes,” said Student Care Coordinator Adrienne Noriega.

Although the program is newer, students are making the most out of the food pantry and demand is on the rise.

“I think we’ve seen ‘The Cubby’ growing, and the need growing, so we want to make sure that we’re always stocked and that students know they can go there, and that it’s a safe place for them, and that they’re gonna receive the nourishment that they need,” Noriega said.

Students are ready to take full advantage of the pantry to try to eliminate a common obstacle that has stood in their way in the past.

“I mean everyone’s sort of heard the phrase, ‘The starving college kids,’ so it’s nice just to have that little program where people can go and get what they need,” local student Nicholas Foley stated.

You can donate non-perishables to “The Cubby” on campus or make a monetary donation here.

Man who had sentence commuted by Biden listed on Boone County Jail roster

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man who was released from federal custody this summer after his sentence was commuted by then-President Joe Biden is in the Boone County Jail.

Malcolm Redmon, 42, of Columbia, is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond on a U.S. Marshal hold, jail records indicate.

Capt. Brian Leer, with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office told ABC 17 News Saturday afternoon that Redmon is being held on a federal detainer based on violation of probation. Leer said the Columbia Police Department took Redmon into custody.

All other information will have to come from the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, Leer said, as they are the ones who issued the warrant.

Redmon was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison in 2016 after pleading guilty to being involved in a cocaine-selling ring in Mid-Missouri from 2011-14. Redmon was one of 27 people arrested in 2014 throughout Missouri and Illinois.

He was one of nearly 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug charges to have their sentence commuted by former Biden. He was released from federal custody on July 16.

A family member of Redmon had told ABC 17 News last month that Redmon was in a vocational program. A June 23 filing shows he had to reside in and complete a residential reentry center program until “until discharged by the center director after consultation with the Probation Office, for a period not to exceed 120 days.”

Federal authorities accused him of being the leader of the operation, claiming he directed sales and converted the cocaine to crack.

ABC 17 News has reached out to the Columbia Police Department, Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the Eastern and Western district courts of Missouri.

Pine Creek has a new head football coach

Rob Namnoum

For the second straight season, Pine Creek has a new coach. Trevor Hudson takes over as the man in charge and he is eager to get started, “Like a fat kid with a piece of cake, man. I’m excited to be here, man. I’m excited to get it in. I’m excited to just be here and build something.  We’re trying to take it to new heights. We try to do things better than everybody else,” says Hudson.

Hudson’s career began at Falcon. He’s coached in Las Vegas, and is coming off of a state championship in California. So naturally, Pine Creek is a perfect fit, “You come into a program where there’s a culture and an expectation of winning. I mean, I couldn’t ask for a better job,” says Hudson.

Hudson’s practices are tough, “He brings us a whole new standard and discipline in how we work and how hard we work,” says Pine Creek quarterback, Brady Walden.

Malakai Harkley adds, “We’ve been doing morning weights. Monday to Thursday. And then we have a second practice from Monday to Saturday, 3 hours a day for the practice and 2 hours in the morning. Pretty intense.”

His players like his style, “Coach Hudson is definitely more intense, but he’s also a very highly energized guy. So he definitely makes practices fun, and interacts with us more,” says Pine Creek tight end, Caleb Petree.

Jackson Minton says “A practice with him is like… it has like it’s little mood swings. He’s hard on us. Like he’ll make sure we’re on your percent. But he also has a side where, you know, he can joke around. He can be a funny guy.”

Coach Hudson adds, “I want to be a coach who relates to his players who be able to have a good time. But at the same time, you know, when it’s time to work. I want to get invited to some weddings some days, so things of that nature. So to do that, you have to build that relationship.”

Local warns about a storage scam, and how to avoid it

Eduardo Morales

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Pam Engelmann says she received constant scam emails, saying everything in her storage unit would be sold. However, Engelmann doesn’t have a unit.

After receiving this same scam a second time, she alerted the police of the danger.

“I just don’t want anybody to get caught in this because three months of storage unit, had I given them my card, who knows what they would have done with it you know, it’s just a little frightening,” says Engelmann.

Luckily, she did not fall for it. However, these scams do typically affect people in her age range.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, personal losses due to internet crime increased by 30% last year.

They say that people ages 60 and over lost the most money at almost five billion dollars.

Peter Torres, a local storage unit manager, shares some helpful advice on how to know if an email or phone call is a scam.

“By law, we got to provide the customer all the details and the information that they need to know for them to save the items if they want it paid. Now, if this is a scam, immediately you will know that because they will not have that information,” Torres said.

The Yuma Police Department shares the possible punishments for those caught conducting these scams.

“It depends on the scam though, most of the time the money amounts could lead to felony charges for fraud, but fraud in general is a felony offense,” said Hayato Johnson, Public Information Officer for YPD.

The FBI also says that Arizona was in the top ten for most money lost at $392,000,000.
