CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV) — Responders from Cal Fire hoisted people out of Carmel Valley Sunday morning after an emergency plane landing.

Hollister Helitack was able to lift two passengers out of the aircraft with minor injuries.

They were taken to a ground ambulance and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Monterey County search and rescue hiked in and secure the aircraft as well as made sure there were no other survivors.

CBI, La Junta Police arrest 5 with more than 1,000 fentanyl pills, meth, & unmarked, homemade rifle

Michael Logerwell

LA JUNTA, Colo. (KRDO) – Agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and officers with the La Junta Police Department say they’ve arrested 5 individuals connected to drug trafficking.

The following people were arrested and are facing charges:

Jaycob Butts (30): Obstruction, Resisting Arrest

Adrianna Smith (33): Obstruction

Jordan Del Rio (33): Unlawful Distribution, Special Offender, Dangerous Weapon, Obstruction

Jeremy Del Rio (28): Unlawful Distribution, Special Offender, Dangerous Weapon, Obstruction, Resisting Arrest

Ezekiel Aguilar (30): Outstanding Arrest Warrants

Zachary James (41): Outstanding Arrest Warrants

CBI says the operation commenced on August 29. Law enforcement officials went to execute a search warrant at 1314 San Juan Avenue in La Junta. CBI explained that the reason for the search warrant was that they had gathered intelligence that linked the residence to the possession and trafficking of stolen firearms. The home had also received repeated complaints involving suspected drug distribution and other criminal activity, the agency said.

Some attempted to flee the residence, others barricaded themselves inside before eventually surrendering, and one person attempted to hide in a closet. The final arrest was made when Zachary James arrived at the home during the law enforcement search. He was arrested on outstanding warrants.

CBI says they were able to recover:

Six firearms, including an SKS battle rifle.

A homemade semi-automatic short-barreled rifle with a homemade suppressor. CBI says these weapons were unmarked and lacked serial numbers.

Approximately 143 grams of fentanyl (an estimated 1,430 pills).

Approximately 17 grams of methamphetamine.

“This operation highlights the commitment of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the La Junta Police Department to address drug and firearms trafficking in our communities,” said Todd Quick, La Junta Police Chief. “The recovery of illegal weapons and dangerous narcotics reinforces the importance of collaborative law enforcement efforts to safeguard the citizens of La Junta and the State of Colorado.”

The law enforcement agencies say the investigation remains active and additional charges may be coming.

Palm Springs Pride seeking volunteers for Equality Walk

Shay Lawson

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ)  – Palm Springs Pride is calling on volunteers to help with its inaugural Pride Equality Walk Oct. 25.

Organizers said the new walk is scheduled around when the DAP Health Equity Walk was typically held.

DAP Health announced the end of its nearly 40-year Health Equity Walk fundraiser in May.

Organizers cited rising costs and declining participation as reasons for DAP Health’s decision.

Mitchell Battersby, director of volunteers for Palm Springs Pride, emphasized the walk’s significance amid growing threats to LGBTQ+ rights.

“So many of our rights are being stripped away from us,” Battersby said. “In other cities and other states, things that seem simple to others that are important to us — like crosswalks — are being erased. Equality is about everybody.

Battersby also outlined volunteer needs.

“We need about 20 volunteers that are helping with guiding the route, kind of like route monitors,” Battersby said. “They’ll have pom poms and pride flags and they’re just helping people know where to turn and what direction to keep going.”

He said there is also a safety need.

“About 20 First Aid professionals that we’re looking for,” Battersby said. “Those First Aid professionals will be put out throughout the walk with first aid kits and vests so that if anybody trips, falls or has a minor injury, we have somebody there to take care of them.”

Interested volunteers can sign up at pspride.org, under the “Get Involved” section.

Columbia Fire Department highlights grill safety during Labor Day weekend

Marie Moyer

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

As summer winds down, people may be breaking out the grill to squeeze in those last few barbecues. According to the National Fire Protection Association, August ranked as the fourth-highest month for grill fires from 2019 to 2023.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission also found that from 2020 to 2024, a little more than 21,600 patients went to emergency rooms yearly because of grill-related injuries.

The Columbia Fire Department is reminding citizens to take precautions when grilling this holiday weekend to keep their families and homes safe.

All grills should be used outdoors and away from the sides of homes or underneath of decks and low tree branches. Grills should not be left unattended, and it is recommended to keep pets and children at least three feet away from an hot grill at all times.

For charcoal grills, only charcoal starter fluid should be used when lighting a fire. Hot coals should also be completely cool before being thrown away in a metal container.

Propane tanks and gas lines should be checked before grilling, and it’s recommended to open a gas grill before lighting it. The NFPA adds that if you smell gas when cooking, turn the grill off and call the fire department. If a gas grill’s flame goes out, turn the grill off and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting it.

The NFPA found that around one-fifth of grill fires are caused by poorly cleaned grills. It said grease traps should be cleaned out regularly, and grills are recommended to be cleaned with a non-metal bristle brush to avoid bristles getting into food.
