The agency said multiple engine and hand crews from the county and surrounding agencies were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a rapid rate at the larger brusher along Riverdale.

At least two structures, possibly vacant outbuildings, were consumed by the flames, according to officials at the scene. The second fire at Bradford was slower but also damaged two to three structures, burning two to three acres, officials said. The forward rate of spread on that blaze was stopped by 1:45 p.m.

Seven Cal Fire air tankers and three water-dropping helicopters initiated runs on the larger fire at 1:10 p.m. The flames continued progressing in the direction of Cahuilla Creek Motocross and the Cahuilla Casino Hotel, both south of Highway 371, about 1.5 miles to the east of the brushed.

Evacuation orders were implemented by sheriff’s deputies for properties southeast of the Lake Riverside Estates. The motocross track, casino and properties along the boundary of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation were under evacuation warnings as of 2 p.m.

Both sides of Highway 371 were shut down for public safety between the casino turnoff at Homestead Road to the east and Barbara Trail to the west, spanning roughly seven miles.

There was no immediate word regarding how the fires started.

Hobbs asks for reimbursement from state for storage containers

Madeline Murray

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs is asking the federal government to reimburse Arizona for the $100 million spent by former Governor Doug Ducey.

In 2022, Ducey spent millions of dollars on storage containers as a way to fill the gaps in the border wall.

Once in office, the Biden administration filed a suit saying the barriers were illegal, forcing the state of Arizona to have them removed for $70 million more.

New federal legislation, originally named the “big, beautiful bill,” states $10 billion worth of grants will be available to states that paid for border barriers and other security measures.

Madeline Murray will have more on this story this afternoon and what local representatives have to say on the issue.

Buchanan County Sheriff’s department testing new public safety app

Jenna Wilson

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department is testing a new mobile application designed to keep the public informed and alert.

The initial $10,000 in funding to launch the Sheriff App comes from Buchanan County’s opioid settlement funds. A vital component of the app will be providing information related to the local opioid epidemic, as well as alerts about scams and criminal activity.

“It’ll give us a platform to do opioid education as well as push out messages and safety tips,” said Buchanan County Sheriff Bill Puett. “It’ll also be a broader platform where we’ll be able to notify the public on information pertaining to jail records.”

One key feature county jail officials hope the community finds valuable is the ability to search for inmates.

“I know that some victims are looking to see if the perpetrator of their crime is still incarcerated or whether they’ve been released,” Puett said. “There are going to be several aspects on this application we hope will be helpful for our citizens and ensure their safety.”

The Sheriff’s Office is aiming to launch the application in the next couple of months, although the timeline depends on completing testing, securing licensing, and ensuring the app runs smoothly to avoid frustrating users.

“We don’t want there to be any errors with this so it can be something that continues indefinitely,” Puett said. “This application will include vital educational pieces on issues I know the community is concerned about, such as online predators and elder abuse scams. We’ll have all that available in one plac,e people can access right from their hands.”

Educational content covering a range of local concerns will be posted to the free app monthly.

News-Press NOW will continue to follow and report on the development of the application as it moves forward.

Associate pastor accused of stealing Blair Murphy signs has charges dropped with stipulations

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

An associate pastor at Broadway Christian Church who was accused of stealing campaign signs during the mayoral election has had his charges dropped.

The Rev. Andrew Lawrence Taylor-Peck, 46, of Columbia, was originally charged with misdemeanor stealing. Boone County Prosecutor Roger Johnson told ABC 17 News in an email that the case was resolved through a deferred prosecution agreement.

Johnson wrote Taylor-Peck waives statute of limitation defenses and must comply with specific conditions for three years. If Taylor-Peck fails to comply with the conditions, the prosecution picks up again, Johnson wrote.

ABC 17 News reached out to Taylor-Peck’s attorney to learn the conditions he must comply with, but were told the attorney needs to speak with his client first before sharing any details.

Johnson wrote that the victim in the case did not want the charges to move forward and that Taylor-Peck allegedly apologized to the victim.

“Between the public nature of the case and the personal amends made, he felt the defendant had been held accountable. Our office is ultimately responsible for deciding how to resolve cases, and sometimes we proceed even where the victim asks for charges to be dismissed,” Johnson wrote. “But based on the defendant’s lack of criminal history, taking responsibility for his actions, and making meaningful amends to the satisfaction of the victim, we believe this was the most appropriate and just resolution.”

Taylor-Peck at the time was suspended by the church after he was charged.

Court documents in previous reporting say that deputies were called around 5:30 p.m. April 4 to Coastal Electric in the 3600 block of Scott Boulevard for a reported theft. Someone at the location told law enforcement that they saw a man take off with a “Vote For Murph” campaign sign, the statement says.

Taylor-Peck was arrested and allegedly admitted to taking five signs between Gillespie Bridge Road and Vawter School Road, court documents in previous reporting say. He then allegedly admitted to dumping the signs in two trash cans on Mesa Drive, court documents say.

ABC 17 News has reached out to Broadway Christian Church.
