“National Tequila Weekend”: El Paso’s Plaza Hotel boasts USA’s largest Agave Spirits Collection

Paul Cicala

EL PASO (KVIA) — Thursday, April 24th was National Tequila Day, and, the celebration continues through the weekend. In another edition of “People, Places & Paul“, KVIA Anchor Paul Cicala goes “Xtra Depth” from the Agave Room & Ambar Bar at the Plaza Hotel in downtown El Paso, where the largest and rarest agave spirit collection in the United States is located.

The prestigious bar and Agave Room houses over 800 of the rarest and most expensive unique agave spirits. Some of the Agave-based adult beverages include: tequilas, mezcals, sotols, bacanoras and raicillas.

Adrian Gonzalez, the General Manger of the Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park, gave ABC-7’s Paul Cicala a personal tour and taste session at the Agave Room for the purpose of this story.

“That’s why we created this space,” said Gonzalez as he showed off some of the most coveted Agave spirits, “so they can see it and touch it, and you know, the bottles are beautiful, but, when you see them up in the tequila towers above the bar, it’s like ‘is that for real’, but, here you can touch them.”

As ABC-7’s Paul Cicala learned first-hand, not only could -touch them-, you could taste them.

The Plaza Hotel’s bar & restaurant “Ambar” is also known to be frequented by celebrities, when they’re visiting the borderland. For example, while shooting a movie a few months ago in downtown El Paso, it’s said that actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio Del Toro made trips to the Ambar while staying in the Sun City.

ABC-7 also caught up with budding Latin Country singer MŌRIAH, who was at the Plaza Hotel shooting a video for her upcoming single.

“This bar, this hotel, it’s one of my favorite in the country.  It’s the reason why I’m filming the first part of my video here as a Latin Country artist,” said MŌRIAH, as she sat at the Ambar bar with an Agave spirit in-hand.

“We could not be more pleased with the level of entertainment and culinary experience we offer through our Agave Room,” says Adrian Gonzalez, General Manager of The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park. “This space gives justice to our amazing collection, by allowing guests to be surrounded by and sample our vast selection of agave spirits, featuring some of the rarest and most expensive bottles in the country. Additionally, it allows many of our discrete celebrity and VIP guests to utilize our private guest elevators to access the room without onlookers.”

The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park offers a series of tastings including:

– Monthly Agave Flight available at Ámbar, price varies. Available every day at Ámbar Restaurant and Bar from 10am-12am, just ask your server/bartender. Reservations to Ámbar via Resy.

– Weekly Agave Tastings every Thursday at 5pm. Reservations made via Ámbar Restaurante’s Resy. $50++ per person.

– Quarterly Agave Dinners are announced via Eventbrite, Resy, and Ámbar’s Website and Newsletter. Price varies but usually dinners are $175++ pp unless stated otherwise. Reservations for Dinners are made via Evenbrite or The Plaza Hotel’s Resy.

People, Places & Paul is a semi-regular segment that airs on KVIA ABC-7 as Paul Cicala takes you to hotspots around the borderland, and also introduces you to many of the “movers and shakers” in our region.

In a press release, the Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park stated: “Inspired by the tequila rooms found in the finest tequila houses in Jalisco, Mexico, by day, The Plaza Hotel Pioneer Park’s Agave Room transforms into an exclusive setting for intimate meetings, complete with agave spirits tasting breaks. The space offers Mexican-inspired breakfast, lunch and dinner menus with delectable dishes such as wood-grilled margarita french toast, featuring brioche bread topped with citrus-tequila marinated berries, fresh mint and citrus zest, drizzled with agave syrup. The hotel team’s vision extends to agave tasting dinners and public tastings of rare and unique agave spirits.”

“The Agave Room is used for bespoke culinary experiences, including weekly agave spirits tastings, agave tasting dinners, executive meetings, bridal party celebrations, and milestone birthdays.”

Fresh chapter: Favorite Bend restaurant formerly known as Esta Bien is reborn under new owners as Simon

Barney Lerten

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — A familiar favorite in Bend’s culinary scene is turning the page to an exciting new chapter.

“Formerly known as Esta Bien, the restaurant (on NW Hill Avenue) is proud to announce its rebrand to Simon — a new name that reflects a renewed vision while honoring the flavors and traditions that made it a local staple,” according to a news release KTVZ News received Wednesday:

Under the new direction of Roberto Cardenas, Simon brings the same warm hospitality and cherished dishes Bend has come to love, with a few inspired additions. The heart of the menu remains rooted in authentic, generational Mexican recipes that celebrate the rich regional diversity of the cuisine. From slow-roasted birria hailing from Jalisco to enchiladas michoacanas and open-faced vegetarian chile rellenos, every dish at Simon tells a story.

Signature techniques — like hand-grinding spices for mole, preparing salsas from scratch with vibrant ingredients, and slow-cooking meats like barbacoa and carnitas — showcase the team’s commitment to authenticity and depth of flavor. Tamales wrapped in corn husks and Salvadoran-style pupusas with fresh slaw and housemade salsa remain customer favorites.

The bar program also gets a fresh spotlight, featuring 100% blue agave tequilas, smoky mezcals, fresh-fruit margaritas, and traditional aguas frescas and horchata — all crafted to complement the bold flavors of the kitchen.

Joining Roberto at the helm is Chef Rocio Villalobos, co-owner and former restaurateur at Rio and Madras Brewing. Known for her soulful, home-style cooking, Rocio brings deep culinary passion to every plate and helps ensure Simon feels like both a vibrant new venture and a comforting return.

Chef Roberto, whose background includes leadership roles at La Rosa, Rio, and Fat Tony’s, shares his excitement: “Simon is about preserving tradition while embracing new energy. We’re keeping the soul of Esta Bien alive — just with a fresh name, new ownership, and a few creative twists.”

Simon is now open and ready to welcome guests with the same great food, heartfelt service, and a new name you’ll come to know and love. We’ll be celebrating with a grand opening party this Thursday.

Emergency communications back online following repairs to severed line at construction site

Andrew Gillies

SANTA BARBARA AND SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTIES, Calif. – Emergency communications systems, including 911 and air traffic control towers, across Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties are back online after a fiber line was cut during construction work on Tuesday.

According to the City of Santa Barbara, between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m., a fiber optic line was cut which caused disruption that impacted emergency communications, a rocket launch, and air traffic control across two counties.

While the exact circumstances of the outage are under investigation, the City of Santa Barbara shared that the Frontier fiber line was severed by contracted workers at the De La Vina bridge replacement project.

“The incident is still under investigation so I can’t provide a lot of specific details,” said City Administrator Kelly McAdoo in response to Your News Channel’s inquiries about Tuesday’s communications outage. “I have already been in conversation with [Santa Barbara County Executive Officer] Mona Miyasato at the County about bringing cities throughout the County together to develop more redundancy in our fiber connections to these critical systems.”

Your News Channel has reached out to Lash Construction which confirmed they are the company conducting the De La Vina bridge replacement and its response provided Friday, July 25 is below:

“As a member of this community, Lash Construction understands the importance of transparency and accountability. The fiber optic communication line that was damaged on Tuesday July 22nd, 2025 at approximately 10am PST, WAS NOT marked and or identified by the Dig Alert system responsible for identifying existing utilities in Southern California. Multiple parties, including our company, are actively conducting a thorough investigation into this matter. Until the investigation is complete, we believe it would be irresponsible to speculate or draw conclusions. Our initial “no comment” response was made out of respect for the ongoing process and to avoid sharing incomplete or potentially misleading information. We remain fully committed to cooperation and will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Orange traffic cones are set up by a hole in the ground near Vernon and De La Vina that appears to be where the line was cut.

Sheriff’s Offices in both counties confirmed Wednesday morning that 911 lines are back in operation after service was restored Tuesday evening.

Anyone still having problems reaching 911 in Santa Barbara County can still text the number during an emergency or use one of the alternate numbers listed here shared the County of Santa Barbara.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office detailed that landline and cellular service for Frontier, Verizon, and AT&T customers was interrupted and if anyone is still experiencing issues reaching emergency dispatchers, they can call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line at 805-781-4550, option 3.

“A third-party doing construction work cut fiber lines, disrupting service in the area,” explained a Frontier spokesperson when contacted by Your News Channel.

The Santa Barbara Airport was busier than usual today with people coming and going a day later than planned due to disruptions impacts on Air Traffic Control communications.

Dennis Rose was flying home a visit with his mother when his flight was redirected.

“I was 40 minutes into the flight and I woke up to the pilot asking, kind of mentioning, I think that you all felt the big u-turn back to Salt Lake City, ” said Rose.

He said he hopes technology can be improved to prevent something similar from happening again.

Santa Barbara County’s Office of Emergency Management Director Kelly Hubbard said is showed how agencies can work together.

“It is a good reminder that Ready SBC alerts can be used for concepts other than just fire and floods,” said Hubbard, “We were able to use our registrations and those people who registered with Ready SBC alerts to notify them and let them know critical information.”
