More volunteers needed for Soles for Christ

Charles Christian

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — An anticipated annual event that provides kids with new shoes is in need of more volunteers.

Soles for Christ, sponsored by the AFL-CIO, will hold its annual shoe distribution from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both Monday, Aug. 11, and Tuesday, Aug. 12.

The annual Soles for Christ event provides shoes for an average of 1,100 students each year to help start the school year, according to executive director Nichi Seckinger.

“Right now we have about 70 volunteers signed up,” Seckinger said, “And we usually have between 110 and 130.”

Seckinger said she realizes it is summer and many people are traveling, but said the good news is, the AFL-CIO has added tools to make it easier for volunteers, givers and clients.

“We’re going to a digital format for entering everyone this year,” Seckinger said. “So, we are hoping that will speed up the process, since there won’t be as much paperwork to process.”

Givers can also go online and have shoes shipped directly to the AFL-CIO through Amazon. That link can be found on the AFL-CIO website.

Seckinger said that although she does encourage people to shop locally where possible, those who need the convenience of online ordering and delivery can easily utilize the Amazon shipping process.

There are already hundreds of boxes of shoes in all size ranges at the AFL-CIO building on 6th Street in St. Joseph; however, staff at AFL-CIO said the group is always needing as many donations as possible for this event, since shoes are provided to a wide range of age groups.

Volunteers are needed to coordinate children and parents when they arrive, to help get shoe sizes and to help students try on the shoes. The volunteers can help the large two-day event go smoothly and help ensure each child gets the shoes that are right for them.

Seckinger said the blessing of this event comes from seeing the excitement of the children when they find the right shoes for them.

“It’s so fun when the little ones run around in their new shoes,” Seckinger said. “Most of the time, they ask their parents if they can wear their shoes home, instead of waiting for the first day of school.”

The event will be held at the Scottish Rite building, located at 515 N. 6th St.

Parents must bring all children who need shoes to the distribution. Only one adult is allowed at the fitting station; other adults can wait in the exit area.

Children going to preschool through 12th grade are invited.

More information, including ways to donate and volunteer, can be found at helpmenow.org/souls-for-christ, or by calling (816) 364-1131.

Kids with asthma enjoyed a day camp full of activities and a graduation

Mickey Adams

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) — Forty kids with asthma were given the opportunity to learn about their disease by getting more active at the 39th annual Mark Velcoff M.D. Asthma Camp.

They chanted, “I’ll not let my asthma stop me,” ahead of enjoying outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, soccer and more.

In addition to this, the camp offers kids with mild to severe asthma a chance to learn about the medication they take, what triggers their asthma, and how the disease affects their bodies.

Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue visited the graduation Friday, saying that he relates to the kids.

“When I was your age, I had asthma and I didn’t have any of this,” he said to the kids. “The fact that your families have made this commitment and that you’re here, is really a neat thing. I’m guessing you’re appreciative of it.”

The camp was organized by Salinas Valley Health and is fully funded through donations to the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital Program.

Pocatello skaters celebrate grand opening of Optimist Skatepark on Friday

Sam Ross

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI)– Skaters, city leaders, and supporters gathered to celebrate the grand opening ribbon-cutting of the new Optimist Skatepark on Friday.

The skatepark features stairs, rails, ledges, and a six-foot-deep bowl, as well as a concrete ledge feature in the shape of the State of Idaho. The park was designed by Pillar Design Studios and built by Artisan Skateparks in partnership with the Pocatello Parks and Recreation Department and local skaters who pitched in on construction.

“Skateboarding connects generations, neighborhoods, stories; it gives us a common memory, a shared past that we could build our future on,” said Darin Black, owner of Deckadence Board Shoppe in Pocatello and member of the city’s Parks and Rec Advisory Board. “This skate park is your skate park. This skate park is my skate park. This skate park is our skate park. Let’s honor it.”

Also unveiled at the ribbon-cutting ceremony was a memorial plaque honoring legendary local skater Chevy Nichols, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 17.

At the event, attended by hundreds of people, skaters shared the importance of having a new, designated place to practice their sport in the Portneuf Valley.

“It’s a good euphoric feeling,” said Dillon Jackson, a Pocatello skater who helped lay concrete during the final stages of park construction. “The whole community, and the sea of people we just seen, they all cheering because we got a park, and of course for Chevy, that was really cool, really brought a tear to my eye.”

Optimist Skatepark is located at 972 N 7th Ave in Pocatello.

Time’s ticking, tell ITD what Idaho roads need!

Ariel Jensen

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — The Idaho Transportation Department wants your feedback on what to work on next, but the clock to submit your responses is ticking.

The department has a 30-day open comment period where anyone can comment on the long-term plan for some projects across the state, but it ends Thursday, August 1st, 2025

ITD says they are seeing a lot of great feedback on their Facebook page, but if you want to see actual change, you need to submit your suggestions through the correct channels.

“People care greatly about the roads that affect them the most. Of course, we all care about the ones we have to travel, right? So we get a lot of comments on interstates, get a lot of comments on places with the most congestion or the highest safety concerns, and many of which people will find that those projects are already in our long-term plan. But there are some, of course, that we’re happy to hear when it’s like we didn’t realize we might need to think about that, and people give us good feedback to be able to do that, said Sky Buffat, Public Information Officer, of the Idaho Transportation Department.
