Training camp unites community ahead of Red Rally

Kyle Schmidt

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — After a day off Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs were back at training camp — and the fans showed up.

The entire team was available for autographs, and fans lined up before and after practice for a chance to get their favorite player’s signature. Keyton Reck has been a Chiefs fan his whole life and hoped to get an autograph from one of the players.

“I know there’s a lot of people here, so I might have a small chance,” Reck said. “But whatever I get I am going to be grateful for, no matter what.”

Season ticket holder, Phil Smith, has been lucky enough to collect many autographs over the years. Sunday wasn’t about the signatures for him — he was more interested in watching the offensive line.

“I’m here mostly to watch Josh Simmons and some of the players,” Smith said. “I’m here to see what kind of offensive line protection that we’re going to have for Patrick Mahomes.”

Each year, the Chiefs attract fans from all over the country to training camp. For Shaunta Griddine, said team impacts the community in ways that go beyond football.

“It is a family dynamic that’s what we do every year,” Griddine said. “That’s the reason why we get better: because it is a family dynamic.”

RBI Diamondbacks continue dominant run in Seattle

Paul Vozzella

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The RBI Arizona Diamondbacks, with five Yuma County athletes, continued its terrific performance in Seattle on Saturday.

The team made up of some of Arizona’s best high school baseball players pulled out a 12-2 win in the morning to advance to the west regional semifinal game.

Kofa High School shortstop Julio Reina led the way going 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple.

In the semifinal game, the D-Backs did not show any signs of regression. Behind a complete game shutout and massive offensive production, led by San Luis’ own Carlos Gonzalez – who registered an RBI-single and a walk – the Diamondbacks smoked the RBI Colorado Rockies 12-0.

RBI Diamondbacks coach and Gila Ridge High School head coach James Kuzniak took a look at the bigger picture of the tournament.

“It’s a really cool, eye opening experience for them of seeing what baseball is like on the next level, while getting to compete and make friends,” he said.

And the experience isn’t over yet. The team will play the RBI Seattle Mariners, who they beat earlier in the tournament, in the championship game tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Military family has their truck stolen while moving to Fort Carson

Karla Sosa

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)- A military family that was moving from Oregon had their car stolen while they were staying at a hotel in Colorado Springs over the Fourth of July celebration.

The family is asking for help from the community in hopes that someone will find their stolen car, which is filled with family memories.

Kaylee Schaible said her family moved to Colorado Springs because her husband got stationed in Fort Carson.

The family of 6 stayed at the Fairfield Hotel off Geyser Drive when their car was stolen.

“I had ashes of loved ones in it. He had ashes of past dogs. It’s kind of stuff that can’t be replaced at this time,” said Schaible.

This is affecting their children.

“My son, my seven-year-old son, has a genetic condition called CDLF, which is Cornelia de Lange Syndrome. He had all of his paperwork, his toiletry needs, his sensory stuff, and since his stuff has been gone, his behaviors have been erratic and sporadic,” said Schaible.

KRDO13 did reach out to the Colorado Springs Police Department to see if they have an update on this incident, but we haven’t heard back from them.
