Streets close down and construction begins for Santa Barbara’s largest Fiesta performance site

John Palminteri

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –  The transformation of downtown Santa Barbara’s main gathering spot into the hub of activities for Old Spanish Days has begun.

Parking restrictions for the next week are in place in De la Guerra Plaza in front of City Hall.

Volunteers and professional construction workers have arrived.

They are building booths and a stage for events taking place during Fiesta 2025 which begins Wednesday. A ribbon cutting is set for 11 a.m.

There will be at least 15 booths in the plaza and many more on the street between State Street and Anacapa Street.

Thousands of people come out for the events day and night. That includes many dancers from local programs along with the Spirit and Junior Spirit of Fiesta.

There will also be a full lineup of music each day until 10 p.m. at night.

Across the street in Casa de la Guerra there will also be a stage and additional performances.

Old Spanish Days Division Chief Sean Malis said, “we interact with so many different contractors, vendors, the non profits in the plaza and the for profit vendors in the street.”

The set up goes smoothly when those taking part have some experience in the process. “It’s wonderful when we have a returning vendor that knows the drill, comes in here and sets up in a few hours and nails it.”

Elubia Orozco from Elubia’s Kitchen has been cooking on site for several years. She has a spot at the top of the plaza. “In advance, we started working yesterday Sunday. We set up and now we are moving all of the stuff we need for Wednesday.” She is also running a restaurant in Isla Vista and a food truck this week.

The food choices will include tortas, tacquitos, tacos, tamales, churros, papusas, hot dogs, corn on the cob and beverages.

There will be some standup tables in the center of the plaza and some others located in front of the steps of City Hall.

It has a community spirit on the site and with the additional entertainment in the Casa de la Guerra across the street.

There will also be vendors in the Storke Placita area between the plaza and State Street.

North Idaho Authorities seize over 100 Gallons of Huckleberries in commercial picking crackdown

News Team

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho (KIFI) — Authorities in North Idaho seized over 100 gallons of Huckleberries from a group in Boundary County suspected of commercial harvesting, a practice prohibited within the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. The seizure was the result of a collaborative backcountry patrol aimed at protecting the region’s natural resources.

The operation involved the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), U.S. Border Patrol agents, and Kootenai Tribe of Idaho Law enforcement. According to a BCSO statement, the joint effort focused on “ensuring the safety of recreational users and berry pickers in Boundary County’s wilderness areas.”

Sheriff Travis Stolley emphasized the importance of preserving the area for all: “Our backcountry is something we want to ensure stays a safe place for berry picking and outdoor activities. We are committed to keeping it safe and accessible for everyone. Thanks to our partners and Forest Service grant support, we were able to take decisive action against suspected illegal commercial operations.”

Authorities believe the individuals involved in this seizure are the same group who evaded U.S. Border Patrol agents in a separate incident earlier last week.

Huckleberry Harvesting: Report Suspicious Activity

Boundary County Sheriff’s Office

Commercial harvesting of huckleberries is strictly forbidden within the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. It’s also illegal to damage or remove huckleberry bushes, a common problem associated with commercial gatherers who often use specialized equipment like racks, which can harm the delicate plants.

The BCSO urges anyone in the backcountry who observes suspicious activity related to huckleberry harvesting or other illegal acts to report it to authorities. Your vigilance helps protect North Idaho’s valuable natural resources.

‘That shouldn’t happen again’: Local man recalls family’s tragic loss at Dillon Falls, wants to see cable across river

Claire Elmer

(Update: adding video, interview with Bend man, full story, Forest Service response)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — As recovery efforts continue following the recent tragic tubing accident at Dillon Falls that claimed three lives, a local man says it’s a painful reminder of his family’s past tragedy.

In the 1980s, Danny Vanni lost his cousins, Steve and Ben, when they were swept over Dillon Falls.

“When I heard this had happened, I relive what happened with my two cousins. And I’m like – that shouldn’t happen again,” Vanni told KTVZ News.

Numerous people have lost their lives to the dangerous rapids over the decades, including a Bend man who died in 2022.

Vanni’s cousins had been floating with Ben’s three young sons, who miraculously survived.  While Steve was found immediately, in a heartbreaking way, it took three more weeks before Ben was found.

“The good news is, three little boys lived. My aunt had a really tough time, because she saw her grandson floating on something in the water, and it turned out to be Steve’s body. He just told them, ‘Hang onto my neck and don’t let go – no matter what.’ And he didn’t,” Vanni said.

Prior to his cousins’ terrible accident, Vanni says a safety cable was stretched across the river. The cable gave people a final chance to pull themselves out, if they missed the final take-out point before the rapids.

Vanni claims the cable was taken down to film the movie ‘Up The Creek’ and was never replaced.

“There was a safety cable there just for people coming around the bend, when all of a sudden realize they’re not on the smooth, easy river part,” Vanni said. “And the idea was to hold on to the cable and pull yourself to the edge, or tie off and wait for rescue. But, they took the cable down for, I believe, a shot they needed of a raft going over the falls. They never put it back.”

KTVZ News reached out to the Deschutes National Forest to confirm the cable’s past existence and whether there’s any option to install something similar. At the time this story first aired, they said they’re currently looking into the situation and will provide information as soon as possible.

Vanni said he is speaking out in hopes the community and those in charge will come together, to prevent future tragedies from affecting another family.

“Keep all politics and all ridiculousness out of it. Please put the cable back. That’s all we’re asking. We’re a cool town. Let’s keep it safer,” Vanni said.

With one devastated family still waiting for closure, 10 days after the most recent accident at the Falls, safety is top of mind in the Central Oregon community.

Vanni hopes some good will come from these unimaginable losses. “My heart goes out to this family that’s lost people. I know that feeling and our prayers are with them,” Vanni said.

After this story first aired, KTVZ News received this response from the Forest Service:

“Our thoughts are with the individuals, families, friends, and communities affected by the incident at Dillon Falls on Saturday, July 19, 2025.

Our staff don’t have historical context to share about whether or not there was a cable across the falls in the 1980s. Installing a permanent line or cable across the river would pose additional safety risks, because the water level fluctuates depending on the runoff and the time of year. Additionally, there are some skilled kayakers who enjoy this stretch of water, and we want to ensure that this access remains available and unimpeded for them, so we do not inadvertently create safety issues for those users as well.

We have evaluated options to help boaters and floaters be aware of the dangers of the rapids along this stretch of river but have not found ways to engineer a permanent solution that does not end up creating more safety issues for all users.

The Deschutes National Forest has focused on preventing accidents by posting signage at numerous points along the river with an emphasis on Know Before You Go. We encourage the public to understand the stretch of the river they plan to recreate on in advance, have deliberate discussions about how to safely exit the river, and ensure everyone has the proper protective equipment for the activity they are engaging in.”

Buc-ee’s critics not swayed after specific proposal details released

Michael Logerwell

TRI LAKES AREA, Colo. (KRDO) – This weekend, we got our first look at the official plan for the proposed Palmer Lake Buc-ee’s. Days after the town released the proposal, the ‘Stop Buc-ees’ group held a meeting in Monument.

KRDO13 attended the meeting and found that many still have concerns over the proposed development

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Buc-ee’s deal for Palmer Lake revealed: What’s in the proposal and what’s next?

On Friday, Palmer Lake Mayor Pro Tem Amy Hutson sat down with KRDO 13 to discuss the proposal.

“It’s not set in stone. We still have to vote on it. It has to go before the planning commission, but it’s a really strong deal for Palmer Lake,” Hutson told our station on Friday.

Hutson said Buc-ees made concessions to limit light pollution off their property, as well as paying for the building of two new wells and road upgrades in the area.

Plus, Palmer Lake is set to pull in $1 million annually.

Despite those factors, attendees at Sunday’s Buc-ee’s resistance meeting said that those details didn’t address their biggest concerns.

“The water issue, the traffic, the effect on the environment. Those are the main issues that we are concerned about,” Mike Kopyzinski said. “Yes, lighting is part of that overall package of issues that we have, and yes, there were concessions, concessions made on paper.”

“Water is a finite resource in this area, and we have to make smart development,” Shawn Sawyer said

Many that KRDO13 spoke to on Sunday lived in unincorporated El Paso County, not Palmer Lake, but near the site of the proposed Buc-ees and are mainly concerned about the size of the build and the water it will require, despite Buc-ees’ plans to build new wells in Palmer Lake.

The Palmer Lake Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on the Buc-ees in late August.

3 dead and several injured in an early-morning shooting outside a Reno casino

CNN Newsource

By Elizabeth Wolfe, John Miller, Sara Smart, CNN

At least three people are dead and several others injured after a gunman opened fire early Monday outside a resort and casino in Reno, Nevada, police said.

Those killed outside Grand Sierra Resort included visitors in town for a bachelor party and a Reno resident driving nearby, according to police in the neighboring city of Sparks.

Reno police shot a suspect, 26-year-old Dakota Hawver, authorities said. Hawver was taken into custody and sent to a hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday, according to Sparks police.

Investigators allege Hawver first shot five people in the valet area, killing two of them – Justin Aguila and Andrew Canepa, both 33-year-old Southern California residents, Sparks police said. Aguila and Canepa, visiting for a bachelor party, were shot from behind while waiting for a ride to an airport, police said.

The sixth person shot and third person killed, 66-year-old Reno resident Angel Martinez, was driving his car through the casino parking lot when Hawver ambushed him and shot him several times, police said.

Two others who were shot still were hospitalized Tuesday but are expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Investigators have not identified a motive in the shooting, according to police. Hawver does not have a criminal history or any documented issues with mental health, Sparks police said Tuesday. Details about what charges he would face were not immediately released.

A multifaith candlelight vigil honoring the victims will be held Wednesday evening at the Unity Center of Reno, according to the organization’s website.

How the shooting unfolded

The suspect was seen pacing the parking lot of the resort – located less than 3 miles east of downtown Reno – for about 45 minutes before the shooting, a law enforcement official briefed on the incident told CNN.

At some point, the gunman walked into the resort’s valet area and began shooting, Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth told reporters Monday. The shooting was reported shortly before 7:30 a.m., authorities said.

“Once at valet, the suspect produced a handgun and pointed it at a group of victims,” Crawforth said. “The suspect’s firearm malfunctioned. However, he was able to make it operable. Once operable, the suspect fired multiple times at the group of victims at valet.”

Five people were shot in the valet area, one of whom died at the scene, and another of whom was declared dead at a hospital, Sparks police said.

After the gunfire in the valet area, the suspect, who had multiple magazines of ammunition, turned and fled through the parking lot, where a resort security guard confronted him, the police chief said. The suspect shot at the security officer, who returned fire.

As the suspect fled, he shot at a person who was driving through the parking lot, killing that driver, according to Crawforth.

Reno police received a report of the shooting at 7:25 a.m. and were at the scene within about two minutes, according to Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance.

Officers found the suspect in the parking lot, and he began firing at officers, striking a patrol vehicle, Crawforth, the Sparks police chief, said.

Reno police officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect, Crawforth said, without specifying how many officers shot him.

“The bravery and rapid response by our officers stopped the suspect’s rampage on innocent victims, which definitely saved lives and prevented additional people from being victimized,” Nance, the Reno police chief, said.

Because the shooting of the suspect involved Reno officers, Sparks police will take a lead role in the investigation of the whole incident, Nance said.

The six Reno police officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy, Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson told CNN Tuesday.

Nance joined Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and other emergency response officials in offering condolences for the victims’ families.

“Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure, not just for the victims, the first responders and the people who are there, but for everyone who calls our community home,” Nance said. “Violence is not acceptable, especially in our public spaces. Everyone has the right to be safe here.”

There was initially confusion surrounding how many people were injured or possibly killed. Northern Nevada District Health Officer Dr. Chad Kingsley told CNN Monday morning that two people were found dead and three were taken to a hospital. A law enforcement official who had been briefed on the incident told CNN two people were killed and at least two others were injured. Johnson, the Reno police spokesperson, dismissed both tolls as inaccurate.

Guest shaken by ‘unmistakable gunshots’

As the shooting began, resort guest Michael Sisco was about to head outside when he heard “unmistakable gun shots” in “rapid succession,” he told CNN.

“I looked out the window and saw people running,” Sisco said.

He saw one person, who appeared to be shot, stumble and crawl to a nearby car and then lie down on the ground.

After the incident, Sisco heard an announcement over the resort intercom that warned of “an active law enforcement incident outside.” It informed guests, “You are safe inside.”

Guests later received a text from the resort that said, “We currently have a law enforcement situation on property which has been contained. We apologize for any inconvenience as we continue to resolve the situation.”

Photos taken by Sisco show emergency vehicles, including an ambulance, fire truck and police cars, outside the casino following the incident.

The resort entrance was still closed off at 10 a.m. Sisco said, though guests were allowed to leave from a different exit. The entire valet parking area was roped off.

The resort’s leadership is “incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team, whose immediate actions helped prevent further harm,” the resort said in a release. “We also want to thank the Reno Police Department for their rapid assistance and coordination, which was instrumental in quickly eliminating the threat and protecting lives.”

No resort worker was injured, the business said.

Reno City Council member Devon Reese called the incident “yet another act of senseless gun violence.”

“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,” Reese said in a social media post.

Shooting at Reno casino leaves 2 people dead and multiple injured, health official says

CNN Newsource

(CNN) — A shooting at a casino and resort in Reno on Monday left two people dead and at least three others with injuries that required transport to local hospitals, according to Northern Nevada District Health Officer Dr. Chad Kingsley.

Circumstances of the shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort are still unclear, but an adult male suspect has been taken into custody, Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson told the Associated Press.

The suspect was seen pacing the parking lot for about 45 minutes before the shooting, a law enforcement official briefed on the incident told CNN. The suspect initially opened fire, but their gun jammed, the official said. Once he cleared the jam, he resumed shooting.

The suspect was transported to the hospital and is in unknown condition, Kingsley said.

The gunman’s motive is still unknown, and investigators are speaking to the suspect, the law enforcement official said. The victims do not appear to be connected.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. Monday outside the casino in the valet area, Johnson told the Associated Press.

The Reno Police Department warned residents to stay out of the area. Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, were seen outside the casino on Monday.

“My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,” Reno City Councilmember Devon Reese said in a social media post.

Idaho Falls-based beef processing plant sold to American Farmers Network

News Team

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) — American Farmers Network (AFN) has officially acquired Intermountain Packing LLC (IMP), the Idaho Falls-based beef processing plant.

According to a press release, the move allows AFN to fully integrate and control its supply chain, bringing cattle processing, fabrication, and further processing in-house. Sanin Mirvic, Founder and CEO of AFN, called the acquisition a “game-changer” for the company.

“We can ensure the highest quality standards from the ranch to the consumer’s table. This acquisition of Intermountain Packing not only enhances our operational efficiency but also strengthens our commitment to providing sustainable, highest quality grass-fed beef,” said Mirvic.

Bill Hampton, CEO of Intermountain Packing, echoed Mirvic’s enthusiasm, highlighting the partnership’s potential for expanding the plant’s current capacity. “We are thrilled to join forces with American Farmers Network,” said Hampton. “Together, we are poised to set new standards in the grass-fed beef industry, delivering exceptional products to our consumers while optimizing our operations.”

The acquisition comes after a year of challenges for Intermountain Packing, including a large number of complaints from Idaho Falls residents due to a pungent odor emanating from the plant. In February, former IMP CEO David Adams was charged with creating a public nuisance in connection with the smell. The following month, Bill Hampton assumed the role of Chief Operating Officer at IMP, according to his LinkedIn profile.
