During the early morning hours of Wednesday, ECPD says their Night Shift Patrol Officers found the stolen vehicle on Eighth and Main Street, prompting them to attempt a traffic stop.

However, the driver did not stop and initiated a pursuit, which ended in Seeley when the suspect “crashed into a fence and tried to flee on foot,” according to ECPD.

ECPD says officers caught and arrested the suspect, who was then booked into the Imperial County Jail on multiple felony charges.

Trial date set for Wayne Sells’ lawsuit against CPS for football field naming rights

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Trial dates have been scheduled for next year in the case over the name of Rock Bridge High School’s football field.

Wayne Sells refiled a lawsuit in October 2024 against Columbia Public Schools over the naming rights to the field. Sells previously filed a lawsuit against the school district in 2021, claiming CPS had a legal contract with him after he gave Rock Bridge High School a $100,000 donation.

Court filings from Tuesday indicate a pretrial conference was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 2026; while the jury trial is set for 9 a.m. May 12, 2026.

The Columbia Board of Education unanimously voted to rename its athletics field in 2020 after Sells went on Facebook and criticized professional athletes who were protesting during the national anthem before games by kneeling. Sells had suggested renaming the field Veterans Memorial Field.

Sells claims that he has naming rights to the field as a part of an agreement he made with the then-athletic director and that renaming it is a breach of contract. The district previously argued that there was never a formal written agreement.

A cool trip: Lava River Cave tour proceeds support forest program hit by federal funding cuts

Jillian Fortner

(Update: Adding videos, Adding details, Jillian Fortner has a report at 6)

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Lava River Cave, Oregon’s longest known lava tube, is now open for summer guided tours. The nonprofit Discover Your Forest is offering tours for a second season, after launching the program as a pilot last year.

The tour lasts roughly 90 minutes to two hours.

“We stop along the way to discuss geology, ecology, the bats in the cave and what visitors are seeing. We do kind of give an introduction so people know what they’re getting into to feel safe and comfortable as well”, said Sophia Zoll, Conservation Educator for Discover Your Forest.

The cave stretches two miles underground, with ceilings reaching up to 60 feet.

Visitors are encouraged to dress in warm layers, as temperatures inside the cave stay around 42 degrees year-round. A strong flashlight is also recommended.

“We do provide flashlights here, available for rent for $7. They’re really nice, powerful flashlights. If you do bring your own flashlight, you’re absolutely welcome to, but just make sure they’re really powerful.” Zoll said.

Visitors are also asked to wear clothing and gear that haven’t been inside other caves, to help prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome, a deadly disease that affects bats.

“There aren’t any official confirmed cases of white-nose syndrome in Oregon, as of 2025. But as of 2024, white-nose syndrome spread through Washington more than it ever had. So that’s right up against the Columbia River Gorge,” Zoll said.

All proceeds from the tours go to Discover Your Forest, which supports conservation and educational programs in the Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests.

The nonprofit says the funding comes at a critical time.

“It’s more important than ever for us to keep our education programs free and have programs like this, the guided tours that allow us to do so due to the changes in federal funding,” said Laken Bose, Discover Your Forest’s Director of Education and Interpretation.

These funding issues are part of a nationwide trend that has seen thousands of probationary and seasonal Forest Service employees laid off in 2025, further straining nonprofit partners like Discover Your Forest.

“Because so many nonprofits are feeling that lack of federal funding, competition for grants has become more intense than it has in the past as well,” Bose said.

Tour prices range from free to $60, depending on age, and donations can also be made online to support the organization’s mission.

Lava River Cave guided programs are available on Thursdays, June 6 through September 5, with the exception of Thursday, July 4. Programs are at 2:00 p.m. and last one and a half to two hours. No hiking or caving experience is necessary.

Prior registration is required. Please register at: Lava River Cave Tours – Discover Your Forest. A Recreation.gov timed ticket is not required for this program.

For questions, please contact Laken Bosé, Education and Interpretive Programs Manager at (541) 383-5557 or laken.bose@discovernw.org

Bryan Kohberger admits he killed four University of Idaho students

Ariel Jensen

BOISE, Idaho (KIFI) — Bryan Kohberger has admitted in court that he killed four University of Idaho students.

Judge Stephen Hippler accepted the plea deal at a hearing that wrapped up around noon on Wednesday in a Boise courtroom. Kohberger pleaded guilty to four first-degree murder charges for the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, and Madison Mogen. The murders happened at a home near the University of Idaho campus in November 2022.

During the hearing, prosecutors laid out some of their evidence, including pings showing Kohberger’s cell phone in the area of the King Road home where the murders happened. The judge read the plea offer and confirmed that Kohberger accepts and understands the consequences. After that, Judge Hippler walked through each of the four murder charges, as well as a burglary charge. Kohberger pleaded guilty to each of the charges.

The judge started the hearing by admonishing those who had contacted the court to share their opinions on the plea deal. The judge said some of those comments had been forwarded to law enforcement.

As part of the plea deal, Kohberger will avoid the death penalty and will receive four life sentences in prison. He will also receive an additional ten-year prison sentence on the burglary charge. He will also waive his right to an appeal.

The family of Kaylee Goncalves is blasting the plea deal, accusing the prosecutors of mishandling and rushing the deal.

Hear more from Kohberger’s hearing tonight on Local News 8.

Downed electric line leads to temporary closure of Highway 63 in Columbia

Matthew Sanders

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Highway 63 reopened north of Grindstone Parkway in Columbia after being closed for about an hour after a power line broke Wednesday.

The Columbia Fire Department said at about 3:30 p.m. that both sides of the highway — northbound and southbound — would be closed for about an hour. That followed single lane closures earlier as electric and fire crews responded to the scene.

Emergency dispatchers said in a public alert just before 5 p.m. that all lanes had reopened.

Boone County dispatchers sent a public alert a little after 1:30 p.m. saying electric lines were down in the area of Highway 63 and Grindstone Parkway. The alert urged drivers to avoid the area.

A subsequent alert said the lines were down on Highway 63 north of Grindstone. One lane of northbound Highway 63 was closed.

The Columbia Water and Light outage map showed 773 customers without power in one outage along Highway 63 near Grindstone. The outage has also affected traffic signals in the area.

Columbia Water and Light spokesman Matt Nestor said a line was down on Highway 63, and the large outage was caused by Water and Light crews shutting off a substation to make repairs.

The utlities said in a social media post that most customers had their power restored by about 4:45 p.m.

YCSO detention captain graduates from National Defense University’s National War College

Dillon Fuhrman

WASHINGTON (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) says Detention Captain Kelly Milner graduated from the National Defense University’s National War College last month.

Captain Milner, according to YCSO, earned a Master of Science in National Security Strategy after being “competitively selected to attend the 10-month-long program.”

Milner, who is also a Lieutenant Colonel with the Arizona National Guard and has 30 years of service in the U.S. military, joined YCSO in 2002 as a Detention Officer before being promoted to Deputy Sheriff two years later.

Five years ago, Milner was promoted to his current rank and was assigned as the Detention Center Commander, where he “oversees the day-to-day operation of the Yuma County Detention Center,” YCSO says.

Desert Regional reminds residents of fireworks safety, when to seek medical help for injuries

Kendall Flynn

PALMS SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – Desert Regional Medical Center said every year they expect to see an increased number of people in the trauma center. Not only are people dehydrated from the Valley heat, but they get injured from fireworks, despite it being illegal in Palm Springs.

Last year Desert Regional only saw one patient with fireworks related injuries, which they say was surprising. They attribute the only injury to the fireworks ban in the city, but they say it doesn’t mean this year won’t be different.

Some cities in the Valley, including Indio, are “safe and sane” communities, meaning non flying or explosive fireworks are legal. Medical officials are warning even those types of fireworks, like sparkers, are dangerous, especially for children.

Sparklers can burn at up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, and medical officials say children do not know when to let go or understand that the flame works its way to the base of the sparkler stick.

Burns are just some of the injuries trauma centers see, and they can range from mild burns, to nearly or partially amputated extremities.

Desert Regional says you can see the trauma center for any medical treatment no matter the severity. However, if you have a burn larger than the palm of your hand, a near or partial amputation or eye injury, you should seek medical attention.
