4-alarm fire burning near Oakland Coliseum

KTVU FOX 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU-TV) — Firefighters are responding to a four-alarm blaze burning near the Oakland Coliseum.

The Oakland Fire Department announced on X just before 5:10 p.m. that crews were on the scene of the fire at a commercial building in the 5200 block of East 8th Street.

OFD Fire Chief Damon Convington told KTVU that the fire was first reported at about 4:55 p.m. and was quickly upgraded to a two-alarm, then a four-alarm response.

“This easily could have been a two or three block radius fire had the crews not acted so quickly to get it under control,” Covington said, adding that firefighters were still working to fully extinguish the blaze as of about 6 p.m.

OFD Battalion Chief Porya Jeddi told KTVU that an Oakland Police Department officer on scene who spoke with a tenant of the burning building learned there was a possible marijuana grow operation inside the one-story warehouse, though authorities could not comment on the legality of the operation or if it was related to the fire.

Jeddi noted that the entire warehouse was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, which he said was “not normal” for a building of that size.

“On a bigger building like this, we have some time to recover. However, upon arrival, the whole warehouse was gone,” Jeddi said.

Jeddi added that the size of the fire meant responders had to switch to defensive tactics once they arrived at the scene. Firefighters focused on defending adjacent buildings that were exposed to the flames.

Jeddi added crews managed to halt the fire from spreading to nearby residential buildings, though the fire spread to RVs parked in the area and to an adjacent abandoned building.

Jeddi said more than 70 firefighters managed to stop forward progress of the fire by about 6 p.m. No firefighters or bystanders were reported injured in the fire.

Prostate cancer numbers rise leading doctors to urge early screening that can save lives

Peter Daut

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) -The CDC says prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. With prostate cancer cases on the rise across the nation local health experts want you to know how critical it can be for men to get screened to catch potential cases as early as possible.

About 313,000 new cases of prostate cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year. Doctors say men who are 55 to 69 years old should talk to their doctors about being screened for prostate cancer with what’s called APSA test.

Many wonder what they can do to prevent the onset of this condition. Official Dr. Amir Lavaf, the Radiation Oncologist at Desert Regional Medical Center explains, “Healthy diet and exercise is what we always recommend. But there is no one common intervention or pill or supplement that will actually prevent it.”

The average age of men when they are first diagnosed with prostate cancer is 67 but healthcare officials say if you have symptoms that worry you, see your doctor right away.

Local high school marching band takes their show on the road to Washington DC

Michael Coats

WASHINGTON D.C. (KIFI) – They’ve practiced in parking lots, performed in gymnasiums, and spent months fundraising. Now, they’ll be coming home after performing on a national stage. Right in the heart of Washington, D.C. Hillcrest High School’s marching band just represented their school this Fourth of July. They were carrying the sound of their hometown to the steps of the Capitol.

Idaho Senator James Risch nominated the Hillcrest band to perform in the National Independence Day Parade. For many of the students who made the trip, it was their first time on a plane, their first time seeing the Capitol, and their first time performing for a national audience.

The annual parade takes place every Independence Day, on Constitution Ave along the National Mall.

The students were also taken on a tour of the city for several days, seeing monuments, museums and even laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery.
