Columbia man accused of shooting at neighbors in mobile home park

Matthew Sanders

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 64-year-old Columbia man was in the Boone County Jail on Monday, facing six felonies for allegedly shooting at his mobile home park neighbors over fireworks.

Nevada Henderson was charged Monday with three counts of first-degree assault, being a felon with a gun, armed criminal action and child endangerment. His initial court appearance was set for Monday afternoon.

One of Henderson’s neighbors at the Blue Acres mobile home park told deputies that Henderson came out of his mobile home yelling at them over fireworks early Saturday, according to a probable cause statement. Henderson then walked toward them and began firing as they ran to their home for cover, according to the statement.

Deputies say they found several 9mm shell casings next to Henderson’s vehicle. Police found a .22-caliber pistol in Henderson’s home, but he denied having a 9mm handgun.

Henderson is being held without bond.

Fayette woman charged in 2021 infant’s death back in Boone County Jail

Madison Stuerman

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Fayette woman charged with murder for the death of an 8-month-old girl in 2021 is back in the Boone County Jail after she was released by mistake.

According to jail records, Jennifer Johnson, 49, of Columbia, was booked into the Boone County Jail around 5 p.m. on Saturday. She was arrested and jailed in Pulaski County, Arkansas, on June 26.

She was extradited to Boone County after an arrest warrant was issued for Johnson in June, following her release on parole from a Missouri prison.

Online records show she was sent to the Arkansas Department of Corrections. A spokesperson for the Arkansas DOC said in an email there was not anyone by her name in their custody.

Johnson is charged with second-degree murder and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child for the death of Hannah Kent in 2021.

Boone County Prosecutor Roger Johnson told ABC 17 News in June that this is the first time he has seen something like this happen and is working with the Department of Corrections to address the issue.

Columbia police arrested Jennifer Johnson in April 2021, after being called to a home in the 1000 block of Elleta Boulevard in Columbia.

According to court documents, police were dispatched to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Columbia on the morning of April 18, 2021, where they were informed that an 8-month-old, Hannah Kent, who was under her care, had died.

Jennifer Johnson allegedly told police that she last saw the infant alive at 2:15 a.m. after giving her a bottle, the probable cause statement says.

A court hearing is set for July 14 at the Boone County Courthouse.

Tips on reducing your summer electricity bill

Nicole Ardila

As temperatures increase, so does your electricity bill. ABC-7 spoke with El Paso Electric for tips on how you can reduce energy costs this summer.

The more you use air conditioner — especially refrigerated air — the more energy customers use.

The lower you set the temperature, the more it could cost you.

Here are some things El Paso Electric says you can do to cut costs on electricity in the summer:

Set the thermostat to 78°F — The higher, the better.

Keep curtains and blinds closed to keep rooms cooler.

Reduce AC usage and use fans instead.

“Customers typically will set the temperature of their thermostat and kind of leave it there,” says Robert Heimer from El Paso Electric. “So maybe they’ll say, ‘I didn’t change anything. I’m doing the same thing I always do.’ But because it’s hotter outside, your air conditioner system has to run longer to maintain that temperature, and that’s really where most of the high bills are coming from.”

El Paso Electric has certain programs that can help customers track their electricity usage before the bill comes.

July, August and September are the months with the highest rates, Heimer says.

The following are Paso Electric’s Smart Energy Tools that can help customers reduce their electricity costs:

Budget Billing: Pay the 12-month average every month instead of paying much higher bills in the summer.

Smart Meter: Helps track your energy usage before the bill comes to monitor and prevent a higher bill from coming in.

All the tools can be found on their website, here.

First full week of July brings six new road-related projects starting in El Paso County

Scott Harrison

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — It seems like nowadays, there’s no true off-season for projects that can affect traffic and pedestrians.

And now, the post-holiday period brings six new projects to the area — some of which start Monday — so residents in affected areas should be aware of them.

Three of the six projects are in Manitou Springs, where traffic has already been disrupted this year by two emergency utility line repairs and a scheduled utility line replacement.

Those three projects also involve fiber optic cable installations that require closures of streets, sidewalks, and shoulders.

One project is centered around the intersection of Beckers Lane and El Paso Boulevard; it will reduce available parking spaces at Colorado Ski Furniture and affect four residential streets.

The second project is near the intersection of Manitou Avenue and Old Mans Trail, just east of downtown.

The third project is in the heart of downtown, at the intersection of Canon Avenue and Lovers Lane.

Likely the biggest project is in Colorado Springs at the intersection of Hopeful Drive and South Blissful Circle, east of the major intersection of Academy Boulevard and Austin Bluffs Parkway.

The Hopeful/Blissful intersection will close for a month so that crews can replace a storm sewer line; the project requires a 24-hour crew to pump drainage around the project and ensure that the pumps aren’t too loud for surrounding neighbors.

The project is part of the major drainage improvements underway in the Park Vista South area, where flash flooding from the Templeton Gap Floodway often posed a flash flooding risk and required closing Siferd Boulevard for safety reasons.

Two projects are happening in El Paso County; one is a water line installation that requires a weeklong closure of the north entrance to the new Falcon Marketplace, at the intersection of Meridian and Eastonville roads.

The water line will serve future development north of that shopping area; customers can still access the Marketplace from the west and south.

Finally, the extension of an existing water line will close the south end of Fontaine Boulevard at the Powers Boulevard and Marksheffel Road intersections for two days; the water line will serve a new development north of Fontaine.

All six projects will be spread out between Monday and the end of July, with work happening during daylight hours.
