Missouri attorney general pledges appeal over abortion decision

Matthew Sanders

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Missouri’s attorney general said Monday that he is appealing a Jackson County judge’s injunction, issued last week, that allowed abortion to proceed in the state.

Attorney General Andrew Bailey said in a news release that his office has filed an appeal of the injunction issued last week. Judge Jerri Zhang issued the ruling on Thursday. The Missouri Supreme Court had blocked one of Zhang’s similar rulings in May and told her to reconsider under a different legal standard.

Planned Parenthood clinics in Kansas City had said they would resume services Monday after last week’s ruling.

The lawsuit centers on state regulations that abortion choice advocates say make abortion de facto illegal. Planned Parenthood argued those regulations were at odds with Amendment 3, which was approved by voters in November and enshrined a right to abortion in the state constitution.

The injunction stops enforcement of those regulations while the lawsuit proceeds.

Bailey and other abortion opponents say the regulations are needed to protect women’s health.

Bailey claimed in a news release that the Jackson County injunction means the state can’t enforce laws against coerced abortion, require sterile equipment and clean facilities or require emergency complication plans. The injunction also means abortion providers can refuse to let pregnant women see an ultrasound of the fetus, Bailey claims.

Crook County fire grows to 450 acres, new 3-acre fire stopped near Mt. Bachelor ahead of Red Flag Warning, more lightning

Barney Lerten

(Update: New size on Sunrise Fire; new blaze near Kapka Butte stopped)

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) — One of several new fires quickly grew to about 450 acres in eastern Crook County on Monday, while another east of Mount Bachelor burned about three acres before it was stopped, as crews prepared for potential abundant lightning from a new round of storms on Tuesday.

The Sunrise Fire was reported shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, five miles southeast of milepost 49 on state Highway 380, and was reported at 450 acres by late afternoon, Watch Duty reported.

The smoke plume could be seen over a wide area, including from the AlertWest-University of Oregon camera on Hampton Butte.

Another new fire, the Katalo Fire (Incident 485) was burning Monday afternoon southeast of Kapka Butte on the Deschutes National Forest, east of Mt. Bachelor. It was estimated at three acres before forward progress was stopped, according to a post late Monday afternoon by fire officials.

Heavy helicopters were cooling hot spots while a bulldozer, a Type 2 hand crew, a five-person Oregon Department of Forestry crew and two engine crews worked to establish a fire line around the perimeter. Once the spread was halted, firefighters shifted to securing the perimeter and mopping up the fire.

Other smaller fires were tackled around the region, including a brush and grass fire reported at midday off Yucca Court in the Cimarron City area east of Bend Airport that burned about a quarter-acre before it was doused.

Further east, the 35-acre Bad Water Fire off U.S. Highway 20 near milepost 176 in the Drewsey area prompted ODOT to advise drivers to prepare to slow down and use caution.

KTVZ News Fire Alert will keep you up to date as a Fire Weather Watch (Red Flag Warning) is in place for 2-11 p.m. Tuesday for potential lightning.

Work begins this week on I-15 bridges toward the Montana state line

News Release

The following is a press release from the Idaho Transportation Department:

DUBOIS, Idaho (KIFI) — Repairs and improvements are starting today on the first of 11 bridges along Interstate 15 north of Roberts toward the Montana state line. Crews will be replacing water damaged concrete and installing anti-skid surfacing to greatly extend the life of the bridges. Travelers should expect to see lane restrictions and lower speed limits where work is occurring through the summer and fall.

Crews are beginning today where the most significant repairs are needed, on the northbound lanes of Exit 184 at Stoddard Creek. Traffic will be routed off the bridge and on to the ramps, with travel affects much like those seen last year on the southbound lanes.

Stoddard Creek Road underneath I-15 is the access to popular camping areas and will be restricted to one lane or closed intermittently during construction. The closure will only be in place when passing under the bridge is not safe based on the work being done. When closed, motorists can proceed to Exit 190 at Humphrey, turn back around and head south to Stoddard Creek, then make a right turn toward camping areas.

From I-15 mileposts 136 to 189, repairs are also being done on ten other bridges and interchanges through the summer and fall. Work at Exit 180 at Spencer and Beaver Creek Overpass will continue for approximately six weeks. At the other locations, it will last just three to four days. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on I-15 where these efforts are being completed.
