Tyler Bremner becomes highest ever selected Gaucho in MLB Draft

Caleb Nguyen

ISLA VISTA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara Baseball’s strikeout king is now their highest-drafted player ever. With the second overall pick in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft, the Los Angeles Angels selected Gaucho pitcherTyler Bremner, making him both the first college player and the first pitcher selected in this year’s draft. He joins Michael McGreevy and Dillon Tate — who was previously the program’s highest-drafted player as the fourth overall selection in 2015 — in the club of Gaucho pitchers to be selected in the first round.

An All-American in both 2024 and 2024, Bremner established himself as the best strikeout pitcher in program history this season, ranking eighth in the nation with 111 strikeouts in 2025, the most of any pitcher west of Oklahoma and the ninth-most in a single season in program history. He also shattered the 42-year-old program record for career strikeouts, bringing his total up to 295 in Blue and Gold this season. Over the final seven weeks of the season, Bremner turned in six double-digit-strikeout performances, including a career-high 13 in two different games.

The newest Los Angeles Angel is the 68th Gaucho drafted since Andrew Checketts became UC Santa Barbara’s head coach, the most in The Big West over the last 14 years. He is the fifteenth Gaucho selected by the Halos, with Jack Dashwood their last pick out of UC Santa Barbara, back in 2019. The Gauchos have now had a player selected in the first ten rounds of five straight drafts and six of the last seven.

The first three rounds of the MLB Draft continue on ESPN Sunday evening, with rounds four through 20 taking place on Monday, streamed live on MLB.com.

The event, which was in collaboration with Vitalant, took place at the lodge’s meeting room from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Elena Mejia, the chairperson of the Elks Lodge #476 Blood Drive, says 90 to 95% of the blood collected in Yuma County stays in the county.

Mejia says Elks Lodge #476 is the second blood drive contributor in Yuma County, with Onvida Health being the first and St. John Neumann Catholic Church being the third.

While the lodge sees more than 35 people donating blood during the winter time, Mejia says between 25 to 35 people donate blood at the lodge during the summer.

Tatiana Fuentes was last seen at her Idaho Falls home around 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 12. Tatiana was reported missing shortly after 11:00 a.m. when family couldn’t find her.

Authorities believe Tatiana is traveling with Marvin Juan Godoy Castillo, an 18-year-old man possibly from Texas, and another unidentified man believed to be around 20 years old.

Small plane crashes after takeoff from Sisters Eagle Airport, catches fire; all 3 people aboard escape serious injury

Barney Lerten

(Update: Crash witness comments, DCSO releases details; more info, photos)

SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) – A small plane crashed just after takeoff from the Sisters Eagle Airport late Sunday morning, but all three people aboard were able to climb out a window and escape with only minor injuries, officials and witnesses said. The plane caught fire after the crash, sparking a brush fire that crews were called out to extinguish.

The crash of the single-engine Cessna Skyhawk SP occurred shortly after 11 a.m. by the airport, located on Barclay Drive north of Sisters.

“Initial reports are the plane took off and crashed shortly after,” Jason Carr, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office’s public information officer, told KTVZ News.

“Three people got out and were okay,” Carr said, adding that Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District crews responded to put out the resulting fire.

Carr later said in a news release that the pilot and two passengers managed to escape the plane before it became fully engulfed. They suffered minor injuries and were taken to St. Charles Bend for evaluation.

Deputies Jared Bearson and Tanor Steinbrecher were first on scene, quickly supported by Sergeant David Turkington and other sheriff’s office personnel. Deputies secured the area and assisted the injured occupants until fire crews arrived.

Fire crews from the Sisters-Camp Sherman and Cloverdale fire districts responded rapidly, along with personnel from the U.S. Forest Service, Carr said, adding: “Their swift action prevented the fire from spreading to nearby trees or structures in the residential area.”

“This was a textbook example of interagency partnership,” Carr said. “Our deputies, local fire districts, and the U.S. Forest Service all worked together seamlessly to protect lives and keep the situation from escalating. We’re grateful everyone walked away safely.”

Sisters-Camp Sherman Deputy Fire Chief Tim Craig told KTVZ News the two men and one woman aboard the plane were from out of the area. He said one man and the woman were assessed to be in good condition and the other man was in fair condition.

The cause of the crash is not known at this time, the DCSO spokesman said. The aircraft wreckage will remain in place pending an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.

An airport neighbor who shared dramatic photos of the crashed plane with KTVZ News told us he first heard  “just a thud. I didn’t hear any plane in distress.”

Christine Browning, who lives along Deer Ridge Road, also shared photos after witnessing the end of the crash from her kitchen window. She told KTVZ News the plane apparently hit a tree across the street, then its nose hit the road before the plane flipped over and came to rest across her fence.

All three people who were aboard the plane escaped through a window before it caught fire, Browning said.

FAA flight records show the plane’s registered owner was H&R Aviation LLC of West Linn, Oregon, and it was built in 2011. Online flight data indicates it arrived in Sisters Sunday morning from Aurora State Airport, near Portland, and was on the ground for about an hour before taking off again.

KTVZ News has reached out to the FAA and other officials for additional details and will update the story as we get more information. Join us on KTVZ News at 6:00 p.m. for the latest.

International organization working to send vital supplies to Texas flood victims

Praji Ghosh

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — Following the devastating impacts of flash floods in Texas, one organization is mobilizing to collect and distribute essential supplies and medical items to support those affected by the disaster.

This is a humanitarian organization that is responsible for responding to disasters all around the US.

Heart-to-Heart was able to send out a shipment of 1200 hygiene kits, wound supplies, and hydration salts. They are continuing to work and finding different ways to help out community members.

“What that means on our side is we’re talking to our local partners who are on the ground, and we are sending them hygiene kits, wound care items and oral rehydration salts to the heat,” JP Fisher, Director of disaster response, said.

This is one of Heart-to-Heart’s core programs to identify the needs of people in the community and send first responders out on-site to help those who are impacted when a catastrophe hits.

They have also dealt with more international crises, including the conflict in Ukraine, Israel, Sudan and the earthquakes in Myanmar, which happened a few months ago.

“Here in the US, we have a larger response because Hurricane Helene hit. We were able to provide health services to nearly 400 people who were impacted by the hurricane,” Fisher said.

Heart-to-Heart’s team is constantly monitoring disasters and events happening around the US and overseas.

They conduct extensive training for their volunteers, doctors and nurses, ensuring the team is always ready to respond to emergencies.

“We’ll get our mobile unit to do some practices, so everyone is familiar and aware of our processes and can deploy within 72 hours if we need to,” Fisher said.

Fisher said the program plans to prepare plenty of supplies and hygiene kits so it can reach everyone who is impacted by flooding.
