Salinas Valley State Prisoner convicted of first degree murder; DA’s Office

Associated Press

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) — The Monterey County District Attorney announced Friday that a Salinas Valley State Prisoner was convicted of first degree murder and assault three years after a stabbing at the prison.

The District Attorney says that life prisoner Lawrence Adams stabbed fellow inmate Robert Tunstall more than 15 times in the prison’s yard in October, 2022 using a makeshift weapon.

Tunstall died within minutes of the attack, according to the DA’s office.

Adams now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Inmates die after being attacked in California prison yards

FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) — Two inmates serving life sentences have died after being attacked at California prisons, corrections officials said Wednesday.

Robert Tunstall, 64, died Wednesday morning after another inmate attacked him in the recreation yard at Salinas Valley State Prison, according to a statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Life-saving measures failed and Tunstall was pronounced dead about a half-hour after the attack, authorities said.

An inmate-made weapon was recovered and a suspect identified as Lawrence Adams, 42.

Tunstall was admitted to prison from Solano County in 1976, to serve life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, corrections officials said.

Adams was admitted from Tuolomne County in 2007 to serve life in prison with the possibility of parole under third-strike convictions for arson and other charges. He also was serving additional years for two attacks on other inmates at separate prisons, authorities said.

Meanwhile, authorities were investigating the death of an inmate at State Prison, Sacramento on Tuesday afternoon.

Two fellow inmates assaulted Felipe Rodriguez in the prison yard and the 36-year-old was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.

Two inmate-made weapons were recovered, authorities said.

Rodriguez was serving life sentences, including one without the possibility of parole, for crimes including mayhem, extortion, attempted murder and kidnapping resulting in death. He was first sent to prison from San Bernardino County in 2015 to serve nine years for carjacking, authorities said.

Investigators named two suspects: 41-year-old Selso E. Orozco Jr. and 36-year-old Mike A. Calderon.

Orozco is serving a 23-year sentence on robbery and weapons charges. Calderon received a life-without-parole sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder.

One dead after road-rage shooting east of downtown Colorado Springs

Sadie Buggle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – Colorado Springs police have confirmed that one person is dead after a road rage incident overnight led to a fatal shooting just east of downtown Colorado Springs.

The CSPD said that they were called to the area of Platte Avenue and Cedar Street at around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, to investigate what was initially reported to be a drive-by shooting.

An early investigation revealed that as three vehicles were driving in the area, there was a “minor disturbance” between two of the drivers, CSPD said.

The three drivers all pulled to the side of the road, where two of them began arguing – but the confrontation soon turned physical, police say.

The driver of one of the vehicles then grabbed a weapon and fired at the person he had fought with; police said that the victim died at the scene.

Officers spoke with the other two drivers on scene and transported them to the police department for further interviews.

The CSPD confirmed that the male shooting suspect has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder. His name, as well as the name of the victim, is not being released at this time, police said.

Eastbound Platte was closed off overnight as police investigated the scene; the street reopened shortly before 7 a.m. Friday.

Katie Gallegos lives across the street and said that she was in bed when she heard eight gunshots, followed by screaming.

“I ran outside, heard some screaming, and went down the street a little bit farther, right in front of the house, and saw a man lying on the ground,” she said. “I’ve dealt with some homicides in my family, and I know the feeling that they were going through.”

Gallegos’ door camera recorded some of the incident.

Millie Fick recently moved back to town after being away for a while, and was stunned by the fatal shooting down the street from her home.

“At first, I thought the gunshots were fireworks,” she said. “It doesn’t keep me from wanting to be here, by no means. But it’s sad. It’s so sad.”

Some longtime neighbors said that the shooting was reminiscent of the Halloween 2015 shooting in the same area; Noah Harpham shot and killed a man on a bicycle, then killed two women sitting on a front porch before he himself died during a shootout with police.

This is a developing story and may be updated as we learn more.

Joining the Force: Law Enforcement Academy graduates 23 new cadets

Cameron Montemayor

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — It was a special night for more than 20 cadets who saw months of intense training and determination through the Law Enforcement Academy finally culminate in graduation.

Missouri Western State University played host to the latest Law Enforcement Academy graduation ceremony Friday night, an occasion that saw countless friends, family and fellow officers cheer the start of what many hope will be the start of a long and successful career.

This year’s class brings a strong mix of both men and women of different ages and backgrounds who will now join the force in their respective departments, including the St. Joseph Police Department, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office and Nodaway County Sheriff’s, among others.

Seven of the 23 were officially sworn in to the St. Joseph Police Department on Friday, including 21-year-old graduate Jaxon Ball of St. Joseph.

Ball called Friday’s graduation a moment he’s been eagerly awaiting for years. The Law Enforcement academy begins in January and runs through June.

“I’ve been wanting to be a cop since I was a fifth grade little kid. So I’m getting done with all my classmates . Making it to here was a pretty big life acknowledgment, I’m pretty excited,” Ball said with a smile.

Ball said he’s seen tremendous growth in himself over the course of the six-month academy, both physically and personally.

“First goal is just to get on the street, be the best I can be there … eventually I’d like to be on the SRT (Special Response Team) and then I’ll see what the job takes me from there,” Ball said.

Fellow cadet and St. Joseph native Matthew Weathermon called it a surreal moment to graduate from the academy, crediting his instructors, cadets and directors for helping him find his calling in life.

“I have definitely found myself more in the past six months than I have the past 26 years of my life. The fact that I’m here, it’s almost indescribable,” he said.

Like Ball, Weathermon is focused on developing on the front lines on patrol. He hopes to one day become a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and help get narcotics off the street.

“I knew it was a tight knit community, but seeing how much everyone cares about each other, it’s amazing. Just with my fellow cadets, the relationships we’ve grown over the past six months, it’s something that I will never forget,” he said.

Sentencing for man convicted twice in murder of a Palm Springs art dealer rescheduled again

Karen Devine

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – The sentencing was once again rescheduled for a former attorney convicted for his role in the murder of a Palm Springs art dealer.

In 2022, David Replogle, 76, was convicted of murder and multiple other charges following a retrial for the 2008 death and disappearance of 74-year-old Clifford Lambert.

Clifford Lambert

Sentencing hearings have been scheduled multiple times in the three years since the conviction, but it has been pushed back.

On Friday, Judge Anthony Villalobos stated there was no time to hear the motion because it could take too long, as he had a jury trial in the middle of closing arguments set for today.

Asking both attorneys if they could come back later this afternoon, the attorney representing Replogle said no.

Sentencing is now set for July 18.

The case, originally involving six co-conspirators who murdered Lambert for financial gain, has dragged on for 15 years.

All the men have been convicted or made plea deals.

Replogle, once a prominent Bay Area attorney, forged Lambert’s name on official documents, allowing the men to drain bank accounts and take assets.

One of the other co-conspirators in this case, Craig Anthony McCarthy, is also scheduled to be sentenced on Friday. There is no word on whether that will also be rescheduled.

Man sentenced 3 years for making terroristic threat at West Broadway Gerbes

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man who was found guilty of two felonies last month for making a grocery store to go on lockdown last year was sentenced on Friday.

John Linzie, 46, was found guilty of second-degree making a terroristic threat and first-degree property damage. He was sentenced to three years in prison and was given credit for time served.

According to court documents in previous reporting, Linzie allegedly threatened to “grab a shotgun and shoot everyone” on Monday, July 29, 2024, at the Gerbes Supermarket on West Broadway.

Court documents say Linzie threw trash cans at the store’s glass door and that Linzie broke some of the cart corrals during the attack.

Multiple store employees allegedly told police that they saw Linzie throw trash cans and damage the cart return, the statement says. A manager at the store had locked down the store to keep Linzie from entering, the statement says.

He also allegedly threatened to fight staff.

Man injured in Lake of the Ozarks boat explosion

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 35-year-old man suffered moderate injuries after a boat exploded and sank at the Lake of the Ozarks on Friday.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol report indicates a 1986 Wellcraft Cabin Cruiser exploded after the driver – a 70-year-old St. Joseph man – started the motor. The 35-year-old man from St. Joseph was brought to Lake Regional Hospital by ambulance, the report says.

A press release from the Mid-County Fire Protection District says that first responders were called to the 5-65 Marina off of Twin Rivers Point Road in the Greenview area. People in the area initially pushed the boat away from the dock so damage wouldn’t occur to the dock or other boats, the release says.

The fire was brought under control in minutes, but the boat sank in about 40 feet of water, the release says. A fireboat marked the GPS coordinates where the boat sank for a salvage company, the release says.
