Popular Mexican restaurant at University Village fails health inspection

LOW SCORES

Even though it only racked up 9 violations, Hacienda Colorado inside the University Village shopping center on North Nevada was ‘no bueno’ on its health inspection last week.

Some of the problems include:

Cooked ground beef, cooked corn, and diced tomatoes held at the wrong temperature

Numerous pans were not properly dried before being stacked

The staff was using an improper method of thawing frozen fish

The restaurant was packaging and selling certain foods without the required permit

KRDO13 stopped by Hacienda on Monday to ask about the violations.

The manager politely thanked KRDO13 for coming, but said he had no comment on the violations specifically, nor how the staff was addressing them.

It was re-inspected on June 11, and once again, the pans were stacked before they were dry, but none of the other violations were found.

Also failing last week was the Mariscos Altamar on South Academy near the Hancock Expressway.

The 16 violations found during its health inspection include:

A kitchen worker not washing their hands before changing tasks

The ice machine, utensils, and several containers were dirty

The inspector also found foggers, a roach killer spray, and other pesticides not allowed in restaurants

A mixture containing Windex (a toxic chemical) was being used for cleaning parts of the kitchen

When KRDO13 went inside to ask about the failed health inspection, a member of the staff at the counter said the owner was out of town on vacation and unavailable to respond to the violations.

Other restaurants earning a failing score last week:

Sliced Bagels & More – 115 S. Main St

Sliced, earning a Perfect Score on May 30, just celebrated its one-year anniversary in May.

Yes, the Fountain spot for breakfast and lunch sells uncut bagels by the bag, but it’s really more of a sandwich shop that happens to use bagels instead of bread.

Owner and New York native Shannon Badgeley takes her bagels seriously, and has them imported several times a week from the East Coast.

“A New York bagel has to be cooked in New York water. It’s boiled in their water. There’s just something in the water, who knows what it is?” she said, smiling.

The sandwiches on the menu, from the Florida Meemaw to the Jalapeno Copper to the Love You Lox, were all named by her family members.

“This is a family business, so we wanted to bring the family into the shop,” she explains.

Badgeley says the Plain Blaine is the most popular sandwich.

Named by her father-in-law, includes bacon, egg, and cheese on a buttered toasted bagel with salt and pepper.

Another feature that makes Sliced unique compared to most other bagel shops is the fact that most sandwiches are steamed in a special machine after they’re prepared.

It’s a way of making sure a bagel sandwich appeals to as many people as possible.

“I know that a lot of people don’t like a bagel sandwich because the bagel is big,” Badgeley explains, “and this helps make it soft and nice and hot, and gooey, and brings all of the flavors together.”

The menu also includes a section called “Home Away From Home”.

Each month, Sliced offered the signature sandwiches from two other states as a way of giving members of Fountain’s military community a taste of home from time to time.

The current states offered are Missouri and Kansas.

Desert Hot Springs man caught with child porn sentenced to prison

City News Service

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – A 24-year-old Desert Hot Springs man caught with hundreds of pornographic pictures and videos depicting children was sentenced today to 16 months in state prison.

Victor Christopher Lascano pleaded guilty in March to two counts of possession of child porn, as well as a sentence-enhancing allegation of possession of explicit material showing minors younger than 12 years old, under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.

During a hearing at the Larson Justice Center in Indio on Thursday, Superior Court Judge John Ryan imposed the stipulated sentence.

Lascano was originally arrested in August 2022 following an investigation by the Desert Hot Springs Police Department and the county’s Child Exploitation Team, which combines resources from multiple agencies to ferret out offenders.

The investigation was focused on Lascano’s residence in the 66200 block of Flora Avenue, where warrants were served on Aug. 16, 2022.

“The defendant was found to be disseminating child porn through social media apps,” DHSPD Sgt. Christopher Saucier said in a bail-setting declaration filed immediately after the defendant’s arrest. “During a search of his residence, he was found to be in possession of 600-plus images or videos containing child sexual abuse material on his cell phone and computer.”

The detective said Lascano “admitted downloading the videos and images and sending them via the internet.”

There were concerns expressed about what Lascano might be capable of doing “to juvenile female relatives,” though none of them ever alleged inappropriate contact with him, according to Saucier.

Not long after his arrest, the defendant was granted permission to be on home detention, using a GPS device that monitored his whereabouts at all times, according to court documents. However, last fall, he was evidently caught downloading child porn again, court papers showed.

That resulted in him being re-arrested in January and held in lieu of $60,000 bail at the Smith Correctional Facility.

Lascano had no documented prior felony convictions, only infractions stemming from traffic violations.

Santa Maria area high schools celebrate Class of 2025 during graduation ceremonies

Dave Alley

SANTA MARIA, Calif. – ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ was the song of the day on Thursday throughout the Santa Maria Valley.

All three large public high schools in the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District (SMJUHSD) held graduation ceremonies during the day.

Pioneer Valley High School was the first to hand out diplomas, starting its commencement ceremony at 9 a.m.

Under ideal weather conditions, more than 3,500 people filled Panthers Stadium to cheer on a class numbering 669 graduates.

“We worked really hard to be here today,” said valedictorian Dayanna Soto. “I’m really excited. I think we are all really amazing students. I had the pleasure to work with them for four years. They’ve supported me through many battles that we’ve had together, through walking in the hallways with our masks on because of Covid to being here today. They were also very helpful and so I’m happy it was this class.”

Santa Maria High School held its graduation ceremony in Ralph Baldiviez Stadium for 715 students later in the morning at 11:30 a.m.

“It’s a special day,” said Kacey Van Horn, who served as president on Santa Maria’s award winning FFA program. “All of our hard work is paying off, and we get to celebrate each other. We’ve been together for the last four years and being able to come together and celebrate each other one last time before we go on to our future endeavors is super exciting.”

At 2 p.m., Righetti High School celebrated its Class of 2025 with a festive ceremony inside Warrior Stadium, where 550 purple-clad graduates received their diplomas.

“It really means a lot for me,” said valedictorian Dan Bishop. “Walking across with all of my fellow classmates, my friends. It’s really been a community that we’ve built here. Everyone in our class is really close. It’s really exciting to be here with everyone and experience this not just alone, but with the whole community.”

A day earlier, Delta High School, the continuation school for SMJUHSD, celebrated 550 graduates during a ceremony at Righetti’s Warrior Stadium.

In total, more than 2,000 students in the school district are receiving diplomas this year.

Kehoe activates National Guard ahead of weekend protests

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Gov. Mike Kehoe signed an executive order on Thursday, activating the National Guard ahead of protests scheduled around the state and country this weekend.

“We respect, and will defend, the right to peacefully protest, but we will not tolerate violence or lawlessness in our state,” Kehoe said in the release. “While other states may wait for chaos to ensue, the State of Missouri is taking a proactive approach in the event that assistance is needed to support local law enforcement in protecting our citizens and communities.”

Kehoe signed the order ahead of the “No Kings” protests that are occurring around the nation on Saturday in response to President Donald Trump’s military parade. One of the gatherings will occur from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. in Columbia at the Boone County Courthouse. Other gatherings are planned in Jefferson City and Boonville.

Additionally, protests have occurred around the country this week in response to ICE operations, with the most attention occurring in Los Angeles. Protests against ICE have also been reported in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas. Kehoe’s order specifically mentions “the rule of law must be maintained in the cities of Kansas City, Springfield, St. Louis, and other affected communities.”

“Executive Order 25-25 declares that a State of Emergency exists in the State of Missouri due to civil unrest and calls on the Adjutant General, or his designee, to forthwith call and order into active service such portions of the National Guard as he deems necessary to aid executive officials of Missouri to protect life and property.”

The order lasts through June 30.

Reactions from around the state

State Democrats made several statements criticizing the governor’s declaration, with state House Minority Leader Ashley Aune calling it “unwarranted.”

“Governor Kehoe’s preemptive declaration of a state of emergency as Missourians prepare to protest an increasingly authoritarian presidential administration is a blatant attempt to intimidate and suppress First Amendment rights,” Aune wrote in a statement. “The protests planned this weekend across Missouri and throughout the nation were sparked by the president’s unwarranted and heavy-handed military response to opposition to his policies. By doing the same, the governor will only heighten tensions and increase the possibility of conflict. Governor Kehoe should staunchly defend the rights of Missourians, not mimic the authoritarianism of the president.”

State Rep. Michael Burton (D-St. Louis County) also called on Kehoe to rescind the order, stating:

“Let me be clear. There is no need for the Missouri National Guard to be deployed at this time. The activation of military personnel in response to peaceful protests does nothing but inflate anxiety and increase tensions. Missourians have the constitutional right to peacefully assemble and make their voices heard without being met with armed force or intimidation.”

Rep. David Tyson Smith (D-Columbia) pushed back strongly on the order, saying it will raise tensions at the protest.

“The problem is when you bring in the National Guard, you raise attention and it causes increased agitation. So it almost becomes that you’re—it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. So people want to get together. They want to protest peacefully. But then you bring in the military and then it just raises tensions,” Tyson Smith said.  “It’s really a slap in the face of the citizens. And you’re basically saying, ‘I don’t trust the citizens to protest peacefully.’ The citizens of Missouri have been protesting peacefully all season. So there’s no reason to bring in the military.”

Missouri Republicans backed the governor’s order.

“We will not allow what is going on in LA to happen in Missouri. Thank you Governor Mike Kehoe for taking these preemptive measures to ensure the lawlessness we’ve seen across our country does not reach our state,” Attorney General Andrew Bailey wrote on social media. “We will continue to support our law enforcement officers in protecting Missourians and preventing violence.”

Lisa Gore, Chair of the Boone County Republicans Central Committee, says she supports the governor’s decision but emphasized the importance of both safety and free speech.

“We do totally respect the right of free speech in the protest. I believe they are permitted to do that, and we do support them in being able to express their viewpoint. There’s many people in the military who have died in the past defending our rights,” Gore said.

While Boone County Republicans say they respect the protestors’ right to free speech, Gore added the military takes an oath to defend the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic, and that activating the National Guard is a smart move to help maintain the peace.

“I just would not want to see anything happen to families or children or any protesters or anything. Especially with our business downtown, I’d like us to maintain safety down there so that the businesses are not damaged,” Gore said.

However, Tyson Smith sees the activation of the National Guard as part of a broader, more troubling national trend.

“We’re in dangerous times in our country. The president is attacking the courts. Congress isn’t doing their part. They’re not standing up to the executive. We have to do our part and come out and let people know this is not acceptable,” Tyson Smith said. “We haven’t seen anything like this in this country since the thirties leading up to World War Two. It’s time for people to stand up to oppression and stand up to tyranny.”

Governor Kehoe activates Missouri National Guard as a precautionary measure

News-Press NOW

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — In response to immigration enforcement protests planned across Missouri, Governor Kehoe signed an executive order activating the Missouri National Guard as a precautionary measure.

The activation is in reaction to recent instances of civil unrest across the country.

“We respect, and will defend, the right to peacefully protest, but we will not tolerate violence or lawlessness in our state,” said Gov. Kehoe, in a press release. “While other states may wait for chaos to ensue, the State of Missouri is taking a proactive approach in the event that assistance is needed to support local law enforcement in protecting our citizens and communities.”

The Missouri Department of Public Safety, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Missouri National Guard established a Unified Command to monitor situations on the ground and prepare to assist local law enforcement.

Executive Order 25-25 declares that a State of Emergency exists in the State of Missouri due to civil unrest and calls on the Adjutant General, or his designee, to forthwith call and order into active service such portions of the National Guard as he deems necessary to aid executive officials of Missouri to protect life and property.

It is further ordered and directed that, “the Adjutant General or his designee, and through him, the commanding officer of any unit or other organization of the National Guard, to take such action and employ such equipment as may be necessary in support of civilian authorities and provide such assistance as may be authorized and directed by Gov. Kehoe.”

The order comes after almost a week of protests in Los Angeles and also comes before the nationwide “No Kings” Rallies on Saturday, June 14.

A “No Kings” rally will be held in St. Joseph from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, at the intersection of Frederick and the Belt Highway.

‘ICE out of 805’ Press Conference in Santa Maria Urges Protection for Farmworkers

Jarrod Zinn

SANTA MARIA, Calif. – A coalition of immigrant-advocacy groups gathered in Santa Maria this morning to denounce recent immigration raids.

Several organizations including: CAUSE, MICOP, FLA, The FUND for Santa Barbara, the 805 Immigrant Coalition, and other community partners gathered at the Joseph Centeno Government building in Santa Maria on Thursday.

The small, peaceful rally aimed to raise awareness about the impacts of recent ice raids.

“We are urging our elected officials at the city level, at the county level, calling our governor to take action and protect our community,” says Fernando Martinez, community organizing manager for MICOP.

At least 40 farmworkers from Santa Maria down to Oxnard were detained two days ago, and it could have been more if the employers hadn’t denied ice’s entry.

“I think it’s an issue that it’s affecting us one way or another,” says Martinez. “If there’s no farmworkers, most likely the cost of produce, it’s going to go up.”

Speakers brought up that some immigrant workers are dealing with errors, delays and miscommunications from immigration offices.

In some cases, the logjam dates back to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think the narrative that they’re only pursuing criminals or people with criminal histories is completely false,” says Maria Salguero, Immigrant Legal Defense Center senior attorney. “And I see it with the people that I’m consulting with that are being detained in our community.”

Salguero says a significant number of immigrants have been unaware they missed a hearing, hence the surprise when ICE comes to detain them.

“Under immigration law, if you don’t go to your hearing, you’re ordered deported in absentia, in your absence,” says Salguero. “And I want to emphasize that immigration enforcement is not criminal enforcement. Immigration proceedings are not criminal in nature. They’re civil in nature.”

In a social media post the same day, President Trump acknowledged his aggressive immigration policies are taking workers from the farming and hospitality industries, who are difficult to replace.

He wrote, in part, “we must protect our farmers, but get the criminals out of the USA.”

DSUSD school board passes resolution expressing concerns for fairness in girl’s sports involving transgender athletes

Kendall Flynn

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – The Desert Sands Unified school board has passed a resolution calling for “fairness in girls’ interscholastic sports.”

Attachment.aspxDownload

The discussion of transgender athletes have been an ongoing across the nation, debating transgender girls’ participation in sports. Amid the controversy, the DSUSD board voted 4-0 to pass the resolution, despite highlighting the complex views on the subject from the district’s community.

The resolution upholds the district’s support for Title IX, describing it as an outstanding core value in women’s sports. Title IX, a federal law, prohibits sex-based discrimination in education and emphasizes equal opportunities for girls in sports.

District boards members discussed the need to protect fairness in girl’s sports and cited the impact of biological differences in athletics. With the resolution, the district says it will not change anything for athletes – it is an expression of opinion.

“The resolution adopted by the Board is a statement of opinion intended to express concerns related to fairness in girls’ athletics. It does not establish or alter any existing Desert Sands Unified School District policies or regulations.” – Desert Sands Unified School District

News Channel 3 reached out to other districts in the Valley about the decision and getting answers on if they have a stance on “fairness in girls’ sports.”

We received the following statement from PSUSD:

“We remain committed to upholding state directives and legal requirements regarding Title IX compliance. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) policy, which aligns with the California Education Code has remained in effect since 2013, and safeguards students from discrimination on the basis of gender identity. The California Department of Education (CDE) has affirmed that state law ensures equal and inclusive access to athletic programs for all students. We fully support the positions of both the CDE and CIF and reaffirm our dedication to nondiscrimination and the protection of every student’s rights in school athletics.” – Dr. Antonia Hunt, PSUSD Director of Title IX, Compliance

Stay with News Channel 3 to hear what lead DSUSD to this decision and how officials who work with the transgender youth are reacting.
