Motorcycle club member pleads guilty for involvement in armed assault

News-Press NOW

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — A Pagan’s Motorcycle Club member pleaded guilty Tuesday before a U.S. district judge for his part in an armed assault and attempted armed assault against rival motorcycle clubs.

Jeremiah Z. Hahn, who also goes by “Pass Out,” 42, of Cameron, Missouri, pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering, one count of attempting to commit assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

The charges stem from a May 30, 2022, incident in which Hahn and other Pagan’s members, their support club members assaulted a lone member of a rival motorcycle club at a business in Grain Valley, Missouri. Hahn used his fists and an axe handle during the assault, according to a U.S. District Court for Western District of Missouri press release.

In a later incident on Sept. 3, 2022, in Topeka, Kansas, Hahn and other members planned to carry out a revenge attack on another rival motorcycle club. A plan was in place to use an axe handle or a gun on one of the rival members.

A rival member was spotted in a hotel parking lot once arriving in Topeka. Hahn was armed with a gun and prepared to shoot the person, but a dispute happened among the members and they returned to the Kansas City area, according to a press release.

Hahn and other present members were awarded patches for participating in the events.

A trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol stopped Hahn for speeding on May, 3, 2023, on Highway 36 in DeKalb County, Missouri. Hahn tried to flee at first but later stopped.

After Hahn’s arrest, the trooper found a Smith and Wesson, model M&P Shield, .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his possession. Hahn, who had multiple felony convictions, stated that he had stolen the gun from a member of a rival St. Joseph motorcycle club.

Hahn is subject to a sentence of up to twenty years in prison without parole under federal statutes. The defendant’s sentencing will be based on advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentence hearing will be set after a presentence investigation by the U.S. Probation Office, the press release stated.

Hotel San Carlos in Downtown Yuma sold for redevelopment

Manoah Tuiasosopo

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A historic building in Downtown Yuma is in the process of being sold for redevelopment, and Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls and locals downtown talk about the future of the Hotel San Carlos.

Constructed in 1930, the hotel was once the tallest building in Yuma and served as a social hub for Hollywood stars like John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe. However, after it’s heyday, the building began to deteriorate.

Since the 1980s, the building has been used for federally funded low-income housing.

But now, the building faces a rebirth, and will bring a positive impact to the economy and social life of Downtown Yuma, according to City of Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls.

“When it’s sold, it will be able to go back into private hands and contribute to property tax, as well as the Downtown Maintenance District. It can really change the quality of nightlife and activities in the Downtown area,” says Nicholls.

The preservation of Yuma’s historical landmarks has been a challenge Nicholls says.

Examples include floods destroying the earliest adobe homes and the fire at the Pacific Freight Depot last March.

Nicholls says this redevelopment will contribute to keeping Yuma’s rich history alive and well.

“The hotel has been a monument in our Downtown, the Art Deco style, it’s kind of fallen away. The San Carlos would be worth preserving to understand how the community grew and really reflect that in our culture and in our history,” he explains.

Nicholls adds that he would like to see the building used for apartment or condo living believing it would draw in singles or young couples seeking a semi-urban setting.

Local Claude Crutchfield says finding an affordable place to live is becoming increasingly difficult and would like to see some affordable units after the redevelopment.

“They should make rooms available for qualified people at reasonable rates because right now there’s an 8 month wait to get a place that $400/mo-$600/mo. Everybody raised their rents,” Crutchfield shared.

Crutchfield believes the location and condition makes it a gold mine, adding that there are buildings much older than Hotel San Carlos still in great shape.

“They may have to spend a million dollars or more to get it up to snuff but they’ll make the money back in 2-3 years. That’s a good investment except it’s kind of noisy here, so get a room in the back, not the front,” he joked.

Now the time frame and exact plans for the building’s redevelopment are still in the early stages and KYMA will be following this story as the pieces fall in place.

New bill aims to crack down on adults soliciting teens

Adrik Vargas

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – A new bill in California could soon make it a felony for adults to solicit sex from 16- and 17-year-olds. Right now, it’s a misdemeanor, but Assembly Bill (AB) 379 wants to change that.

People in the Imperial Valley say it’s about time something is done to better protect teens.

“By making it a more harsher consequence or penalty, I think it’ll sway the people from actually soliciting, and actually going younger and younger,” said local Erika Robles Marquez.

The bill still needs to pass in the State Senate. If it does, it would apply across California, including right here in the Valley.

Some locals think the tougher penalty could help, even if it’s not a perfect solution.

“Not completely because there’s still people doing it underwater, I believe, but that would help preventing more cases from happening,” said Hector Perea, another local.

Others say it’s not just about the law, it’s also about what happens at home.

“I believe it should be more on the family, to educate our teens on how to say no to dangerous situations,” said Maria Elena Maya, another local.

Maya also pointed to how the internet has made it harder for parents to keep track of what their kids are doing.

“Right now, there’s a lot of internet, a lot that keeps parents from knowing what our kids are doing. If we are more protective of our kids, it’s good, but also pass laws that should make more consequences for those soliciting sex from teens,” Maya expressed.

As AB 379 moves forward, many in the Valley say stronger laws could help send a clear message: Kids should be off-limits.
