COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — City officials announced late last week that they are delaying two closures on busy Dublin Boulevard, west of Marksheffel Road, that were to start Tuesday morning and continue through the end of July.

Columbia woman charged in baby’s death to be in court Tuesday

Jazsmin Halliburton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia woman charged in connection with a baby’s death is set to be in court Tuesday morning at the Boone County Courthouse for a pre-trial conference.

Sarah D. Brown is charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter for the death of Ayla Gibson. Prosecutors charged Brown after she allegedly put Gibson in a crib with a loose, unfitted blanket and pillow in a position that resulted in death by suffocation, according to court documents.

Gibson’s parents allegedly told Brown the baby had a viral lung infection and told Brown to have the baby sleep on her back, but a probable cause statement says Brown ignored the parents’ instructions.

Brown allegedly admitted to police that she lied about how she found the baby. She told police she found Gibson lying on her back.

Court documents say the daycare was unlicensed. Brown had 12 children in her care at the time of Gibson’s death and was not licensed with the state.

Brown will be in front of Judge Jeff Harris at 10:30 a.m.

Brown’s jury trial is set to begin on June 10.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Did the dreary weather ruin your holiday weekend?

Matthew Sanders

What is usually the unofficial start of the summer vacation season felt more like March or April in Mid-Missouri.

Temperatures over Memorial Day weekend didn’t climb past 72 degrees in Columbia on Saturday or Sunday. Monday was cool and cloudy, too.

Hundreds of people didn’t let the weather stop them from attending Columbia’s renewed Gold Star Memorial Day Parade. But for people who spent the weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks, there wasn’t much fun in the sun to be had.

Did the weather ruin your holiday weekend? Let us know by voting in the poll.

Memorial Day Service at Veterans Memorial Hall in Solvang sparks conversations about freedom

Mina Wahab

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article has been updated with additional information. The Memorial Day Celebration event in Solvang was hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7139, lunch was provided by the Santa Ynez Valley Elks Lodge.

SOLVANG, Calif. — Warm applause filled the Veterans Memorial Hall in Solvang as service men gave speeches about the sacrifices of fallen soldiers and as music honored their memory.

The event was hosted by VFW Post 7139. The celebration featured the Santa Ynez Valley Chorale, SYV Jazz Band, Vandenberg SFB and Post Speakers, American Legion Post 160, and the Boy Scouts.

“The purpose of Memorial is here we stand free. And this is a lot different than you see in other countries,” said veteran Rudolph Henderson, who lives in Buelllton.

Monday was not only a day to reflect on the legacy of fallen soldiers, but it was also a day that brought up important questions about America’s history and what it means to truly be free.

“It’s getting better as a black American I went through a whole lot that I didn’t deserve. But it’s my country, and I’m going to stick with it, try to make it better and just be a good citizen,” said Phillip Merritt, who lives in Buellton.

“Being Native American means I am an American and to the truest sense. We will defend. I’ll always back everybody who defends our country. And I’m always here to defend those people who defend it for us,” said Stefan Ornelaz from the Santa Ynez Valley Elks Lodge.

The Elks Lodge provided a complementary tri-tip lunch following the ceremony.

“Doing anything in service to our veterans touches my heart no matter where they serve. How long they serve. We think of all of the veterans throughout the decades since we became a country, the United States of America,” said Terry Bunn from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that the veteran population will decrease by about 34% from 18.3 million to 12.1 million by 2048.

Memorial Day at Bend’s VFW combines a piece of little-known history alongside military-themed comfort food

Tracee Tuesday

BEND, Ore. [KTVZ] — Following a number of Memorial Day ceremonies, many gathered at Post 1643, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bend, on Monday, to continue the day’s observances.

The VFW serves as a gathering place for veterans and their families, and it’s open to the public.

These local Memorial Day events not only honor those we’ve lost but also strengthen the bonds within the community.

Chris Thomson, a veteran who served in the Marine corps during the Yugoslav wars in the1990’s said, the VFW is home to an incredible piece of Oregon history.

“We’re very fortunate. Tha’Fridge, the food cart out here has loaned us this flag, which was made 167 years ago to commemorate the 33rd, state of our union, and this flag is bearing 33 stars. It’s very tattered. It went on display over 100 years ago.”

Thomson, who currently serves as the adjutant for Bend’s VFW, says the flag will embark upon a mini tour with stops at libraries and the Oregon state capitol.

The flag, which is owned by Tha’Fridge, the food truck located on the premises of the VFW, serves up comfort food – made with love and uniquely named.

“I mean, really, everything is military based. You know, it resonates with any person. We all kind of had… This is my nephew Jonathan, my mother, Judy Trego. Yeah. She really had a huge part in it, and it’s just something that is fun, that kind of takes the, you know, the real reality out of, what they deal with, and put it in the food and make it into something that they can appreciate now, and make them feel good,” said Tha’Fridge owner, Ryan Trego.

Memorial Day means so much to many military service men and women, along with their families.

Bend stands united in remembrance and gratitude for the heroes who gave everything for our freedom.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) – The “Murph” workout is a popular CrossFit Hero workout often done on Memorial Day to honor Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan.

It involves a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1-mile run, all in a 20-pound weight vest. Many CrossFit gyms and individuals participate in this challenging workout to remember fallen service members.

On Memorial Day, members of multiple local gyms, including CrossFit Palm Springs, took on the “Murph,” a grueling workout honoring the fallen Lt. Murphy.

Pharos Athletic Club in Palm Springs also got in on the action. Trainer Josh Phillips talked with News Channel 3 about what the challenge includes.

Phillips explains, “So Murph is a one mile run followed by 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 squats and then another mile of run at the end. And you’re probably wondering, why am I wearing this weight vest? It’s not just a fashion statement. It’s because the workout is meant to be done with a 20 pound weight vest.”

CPW adds new life jacket loaner stations at Lake Pueblo for Memorial Day Weekend

Michael Logerwell

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) – Forgetting to bring your life jacket, or not being able to afford one, is no longer an excuse not to wear one at Lake Pueblo State Park.

For this Memorial Day Weekend are two new life jacket loaner stations located along Sailboard Rd and S Fishing Rd, respectively.

“We try to provide those with life jacket stations so that there’s, you know, fewer barriers to folks having those life jackets that they need,” CPW Spokesperson Joey Livingston told KRDO13.

The Drennen’s Dreams foundation built the wooden stations housing dozens of life jackets, and they’re already getting used.

The two new stations came in just in time for the busy season.

“It’s one of the busiest times of the year, out on our waters, in Colorado,” Livingston said. Every Memorial Day Weekend, people eager to welcome the summer season flock to Lake Pueblo.

Lake Pueblo State Park has over 4,600 surface acres of water, a body of water that size carries significant risk, especially when the water is still colder than outside temperatures.

“The past three years, we’ve had someone die over Memorial Day weekend,” Livingston said.

Livingston says they hope adding safety measures, like making quality life jackets available for free, will help curb that trend.

According to the US Coast Guard, 75 to 85% of people who die in water were not wearing a life jacket. And, the people who were wearing a life jacket have a significantly greater chance of surviving if they go into the water, ” Livingston said, “Life jackets save lives.”

All you need to do to use these loaner life jackets is stop by one of the loaner stations, pick up a life jacket then make sure you wear it properly while out on the water. Once your done, just return it to the station for other lake enthusiasts to use.
