Rocky Mountain Power discusses boat restrictions on Alexander Reservoir to control erosion

Sam Ross

SODA SPRINGS, Idaho (KIFI)– Rocky Mountain Power representatives cite erosion as a major concern for the Soda Springs area’s Alexander Reservoir, prompting changes to recreational access this summer.

The Alexander Reservoir and connected ‘Soda Development’ hydroelectric dam are owned by Rocky Mountain Power’s parent company, Pacificorp, and representatives say they have been monitoring increased erosion of the reservoir over the past three years.

The recent, advanced erosion coincides, Rocky Mountain Power representatives said, with an increased use of wake boats and other ballast watercraft on the reservoir.

“We’ve become concerned that the bank erosion has continued to occur, and we’ve lost, in places here on this bank, five to six feet of shoreline,” said David Eskelsen, company spokesman for Rocky Mountain Power. “It’s generally the result of the increased wake and wave action on this relatively soft shoreline.”

Eskelsen said the erosion is starting to impact the quality of the water coming from the reservoir and degrade the wildlife buffer zone, Rocky Mountain Power is required to keep around the reservoir as part of their land use contract.

Rocky Mountain Power plans to ban the use of wake boats on the reservoir starting this summer and monitor whether erosion conditions improve.

A public meeting will be held at the Second Bridge boat access point parking lot on May 21 from 4 to 6 p.m., where members of the public can meet with Rocky Mountain Power representatives to discuss the changes and future plans for the reservoir.

Pretrial motions begin for man accused of killing Cathedral City teen

City News Service

MURRIETA, Calif. (KESQ) – Pretrial motions got underway today ahead of jury selection for the trial of a man accused of gunning down a 17-year-old Cathedral City boy in a car-to-car shooting.

Juan Alfredo Landeros Garcia, 24, of Cathedral City is charged with first-degree murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations for the 2020 slaying of Isaiah Guerra.

Garcia’s case was transferred Monday from the Larson Justice Center in Indio to the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta, where a courtroom was available for trial proceedings.

On Tuesday, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Johnnetta Anderson received motions from the prosecution and defense regarding evidence, witnesses, scheduling and related matters. Jury selection was expected to start before the end of the week.

Garcia is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center.

According to the Cathedral City Police Department, shortly before 8 p.m. on April 4, 2020, Guerra was driving in the area of Avenida Alvera and McCallum Way when he was allegedly targeted by the defendant, for reasons that were not disclosed by police.

Garcia fired more than a dozen rounds from a semiautomatic firearm while in another vehicle, investigators alleged.

The victim was struck 11 times, causing him to crash into palm trees. The defendant allegedly sped away from the location as witnesses called 911.

Patrol officers and paramedics arrived minutes later and discovered Guerra slumped over the wheel of his car. He was gravely wounded but still showing signs of life, prompting first responders to attempt resuscitative measures that were unsuccessful; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives procured videotape from security surveillance cameras mounted on several homes near the intersection, enabling them to piece together what happened and identify the vehicle from which the shots were fired, according to the prosecution.

Garcia was identified as the alleged perpetrator, and an arrest warrant was served on him two days later on Modalo Road, where he was taken into custody without incident.

He has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.

Columbia sex offender indicted by federal grand jury on child porn charge

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia sex offender was indicted in federal court on Tuesday for a child pornography charge, according to a press release from the Department of Justice.

Andrew Charles Nicholls, 38, was charged last month in the Western District Court of Missouri with sending and receiving child pornography. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond.

Tuesday’s press release says that Nicholls used a dark web browser to send and keep child porn.

Court documents in previous reporting say the Boone County Sheriff’s Office Cyber Crimes Task Force received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on Jan. 5 about Nicholls uploading multiple child porn files to his Google account.

Google was initially aware of the uploads on Sept. 5, the complaint says. The email on the NCMEC report matched Nicholls’ email on the sex offender registry, as did the phone number, court documents say.

The IP address also allegedly matched a device at Nicholls’ residence, court documents say. Nicholls was arrested for a different charge in March and law enforcement took his cellphone, examined it and found child porn, the complaint says.

He is also charged in Boone County with second-degree kidnapping and his bond was surrendered. He is also charged in Boone County with first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle. He appeared for a hearing on Monday by video from the jail.

RespectMoVoters organizing statewide rallies

News-Press NOW

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — Rallies will be held across Missouri to give voters a chance to express concerns for politicians interfering with ballot measures that have already been passed by voters.

The “Save Our Say” rally in St. Joseph will be held at 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Civic Center Park and is sponsored by RespectMoVoters.

In a press release sent to News-Press NOW, the RespectMoVoters group said, “The rally will inform those in attendance of the actions of the Missouri Legislation to subvert the will of Missouri voters. Missourians have used the citizen initiative process for over 100 years to have a say in laws of the state.”

The press release also mentioned the efforts Missouri politicians have put forth to take away “the say” of Missouri voters in this legislative session, by overturning Amendment 3 and Proposition A- which were both passed by voters in November 2024, as well as other ballot initiatives in recent years.

RespectMoVoters is a non-partisan grassroots effort of volunteers across the state, that will draft a citizen-led petition, which will ban politicians from interfering with initiatives voters have already passed.

The canvassing of petition signatures is expected to begin on July 1 by RespectMoVoters volunteers. The group aims for the petition to appear on the November 2026 ballot.
