Local nurse’s aide accused of stealing tens of thousands from elderly woman she was caring for

Mackenzie Stafford

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – KRDO13 Investigates has obtained an arrest affidavit that details allegations levied against 36-year-old Patricia Wallace. Wallace is a certified nursing aide who detectives believe was writing herself tens of thousands of dollars in checks from the 84-year-old she was taking care of.

On Wednesday, KRDO13 Investigates went to get answers from the Colorado Springs certified nurse’s aide accused of stealing from an elderly woman she was caring for. We went to Patricia Wallace’s home address listed in police records. A woman came to the door. The woman said no comment and drove off in the car that police say was paid for with the stolen money.

Arrest records say Wallace told detectives she wrote the checks for the 84-year-old, since she was unable to write them herself.

The nursing aide said the 84-year-old wanted her to have the money. However, family members say she was in no state to consent to that.

The 84-year-old’s wheelchair had a fanny pack on the back that held her credit card. Police say the suspect took her card out and stole the information starting in April 2024.

Following that, detectives say checks made out to Wallace paid for her credit card debt, car loans, and thousands that she told police she gave to family, a friend, and a boyfriend.

Wallace told detectives the money totaled approximately 70 thousand dollars.

Wallace is facing multiple charges, including money laundering and crimes against an at-risk person.

KRDO13 Investigates contacted Wallace’s attorney, and as of Wednesday night, we have not heard back.

As of Wednesday, Wallace is still licensed as a CNA.

Memorial grows for 13-year-old along Harbor Blvd

Tracy Lehr

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. – A memorial is growing at the site near Oxnard where a teenager’s body was found.

Oscar Omar Hernandez’s remains were discovered near Mcgrath State Beach Park, two weeks ago.

The 13-year-old had taken a Metrolink train from his family’s home in the San Fernando Valley on March 28th to help out a soccer Coach in Lancaster.

That coach, Mario Edgardo Garcia Aquino, 43, has been charged with the teen’s murder during the commission of lewd acts on a child.

Aquino faces additional charges of felony sexual crimes involving two other teens.

The memorial along the road and down the embankment honoring Hernandez includes balloons, photos, letters, flowers, a soccer ball and a jersey.

A former Division I athlete returns to Yuma to coach the next generation

Eduardo Morales

Former Grand Canyon University track and field athlete returns to help develop high school students.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Mia Corners is back in Yuma coaching Kofa High School’s track and field team after competing at the Division I level.

Corners graduated from Gila Ridge High School in 2019.

During that time, she signed on to compete in track and field for Grand Canyon University.

While at college Corners suffered some setbacks as she suffered a torn labrum and ACL.

However, she made sure to turn these negative setbacks into something positive.

“Build myself up, build myself stronger, build myself up to be more confident and give back to the people who are injured around me,” said Corners.

Her positive mindset continued to open up opportunities for her.

She was selected for an internship with the NCAA, working on developing her leadership skills.

“I was just able to like experience so many things in the world that opened my eyes and I was like, ‘Wow! There’s so much out there that’s in my reach,” said Corners.

Corners embraced her newfound knowledge and decided to share it where her career started.

She returned to Yuma last summer and landed this job, and her athletes are happy to have her.

“It feels great. Honestly man, it feels amazing ’cause she’s an excellent mentor like I said, ‘She’s helped me through a lot, not only track, but my mental too. She’s helped a lot and I’m really grateful for her,” said Kalueb Haynes, a senior at Kofa.

For Corners, being back home is where she feels she belongs.

“I really do genuinely love being around these kids whether I’m teaching or coaching and I think the impact and the difference that I know I can make,” said Corners.

While Corners hopes to lead Kofa’s track and field to success, she also hopes to inspire the athletes, as she was once in their shoes.

Gusty Winds Trigger Weather Alert for Blowing Dust & Poor Air Quality Across the Valley

Katie Boer

A First Alert Weather Alert is in place until midnight Thursday due to increased gusty winds, blowing dust, reduced visibility, road closures and poor air quality.

This is how air quality looked just before 3pm.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued a Air Quality Alert due to windblown dust from 2pm Wednesday to 8pm Thursday.

Windblown dust has led to several road closures across the northwest valley.

Winds will be the biggest impact here over the next 24-36 hours.

Otherwise look for a cooler, cloudier, and windier stretch through Friday, with some changes on the horizon just in time for a big festival weekend as winds die down just a hair.

We’re continuing unseasonably cool temperatures the next few days with highs tomorrow running 10-15° below average thanks to a passing low pressure system. While the desert and the Coachella Valley stays dry, there’s a slight chance for light coastal and mountain showers late tonight into Thursday morning west of the mountains.

Another weak system moves in Thursday night into Friday, keeping rain chances alive again–west of us–but even at that, very minimal moisture is expected—and the Coachella Valley looks to remain dry.

The big story here locally across the valley? Wind. A tightening pressure gradient will bring strong southwest to west gusts through Friday night. Expect 40-55 mph gusts, with gusts up to 65 mph for the mountain passes. Strongest winds peak Thursday, but remain breezy into Friday.

By the weekend, we’ll see temperatures begin to climb a couple of degrees with more sunshine and daytime highs climbing back closer to seasonal norms.
