Calexico families rally for safer parks

Adrik Vargas

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – Parents and Little League players gathered outside Calexico City Hall to demand safer, updated parks for the city’s children.

The rally, which took place before the City Council meeting, was sparked by concerns that many parks in Calexico are unsafe and unusable.

Families are urging city leaders to prioritize park improvements rather than removing or demolishing them.

Jessica Perez, President of the Calexico Baseball Network, spoke during the meeting, highlighting the consequences of the city’s current park conditions.

“Not only are there consequences for the children of Calexico that still don’t have safe parks, but it could also have severe consequences in our city,” Perez said.

City Council members acknowledged the concerns and mentioned that past planning decisions had complicated efforts to improve the parks. However, they reassured the community that they are actively working on solutions for the future.

Locals and visitors participate in nationwide protest

The protest, hosted by Yuma County Indivisible, happened at 9:00 a.m. on the corners of Fourth Avenue and 16th Street, near Sprouts and Del Sol Market.

This is the second protest this month where people across the country are responding to the Trump administration’s policies regarding healthcare, Social Security, civil rights, and more.

“We don’t want to slip into authoritarianism, and it’s a slippery slope for democracy. You have to stand up for democracy. For everybody,” said Darlene Erwin, one of the organizers of the protest.

According to Erwin, over 400 people attended the protest earlier this month, and said she was expecting over 100 people to attend Saturday’s protest.

Erwin also said they will be holding another protest next month. To learn more about the upcoming protest, click here.

City of Goleta held its 3rd annual Beautify Goleta Earth Day event Saturday

Andie Lopez Bornet

GOLETA, Calif. – “We have a pizza box, an old blanket that was in a storm drain, a few beer bottles, a number of doggy poop bags,” said Brooke Armstrong, a volunteer at the annual Beautify Goleta Earth Day event.

To beautify the City of Goleta, the city held its 3rd annual Beautify Goleta Earth day event on Saturday.

“Last year we got over 50,000 pounds of trash and we had close to 40 cleanups with over 400 volunteers throughout the year so building a good community,” said Ryan Wong, Co-founder of Tidy Seas.

People of all ages gathered at Evergreen Park in Goleta early Saturday morning to help gather trash and hear from different organizations about living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, as well lending a hand in making Goleta a beautiful and clean place.

“It brings out the inner treasure hunt in them,” said Wong. “But having the Kids learn at a young age, it’s cool to see after if they come to another cleanup. The parents are like ‘now everywhere I walk my kid wants to pick up trash and you know we can’t leave that there.’”

The event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of its volunteers and informational tables showing up to help and share. Elubias Kitchen was also at the event.

“It’s great that the city organizes these events just to keep things environmentally clean,” said volunteer Brooke Armstrong, who is also part of Rotary Club of Goleta.

We asked Armstrong about what he thinks should be done to help keep Goleta a clean place.

“Just be mindful.” said Armstrong. “You know, when I go out for a walk and I see a stray poop bag that’s good karma just to pick it up on your route and deposit it where it needs to be.”

Fun activities were available for kids like getting the chance to touch a truck from MarBorg.

Earth day is Tuesday April 22, 2025.

Wrong way driver causes multi-car crash Friday morning on Highway 101 in Oxnard

Caleb Nguyen

OXNARD, Calif. – A 37-year-old drunk driver caused a multi-car crash after trying to U-turn from driving the wrong way on Highway 101 in Oxnard just past 9:00 a.m. Friday, according to the Ventura CHP.

The drunk driver realized she drove northbound in her Chevy when a semi-truck hit her during her attempted U-turn, according to the Ventura CHP. The 60-year-old male semi-truck driver was uninjured from the crash.

The Chevy stopped in the middle of the road when a Ford slowed down to avoid it. A Jeep then rear-ended the Ford, detailed the Ventura CHP.

The 38-year-old Ventura woman driving the Ford suffered minor injuries and the 33-year-old Oxnard woman driving the Jeep suffered moderate injuries, requiring transport to St. John’s Hospital.

Traffic was shut down on the northbound side of the 101 for about an hour and reopened at 10:15 a.m. following clean up, according to the Ventura CHP.

The drunk driver declined medical aid at the scene and was arrested on DUI suspicion. This investigation remains ongoing and those with information should contact the Ventura CHP.

Air Force to base C-130Js in Wyoming

NewsPressNow

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — According to a story posted yesterday by the Department of the Air Force website, the military branch has selected the Wyoming Air National Guard as the next location to host C-130J airplanes.

The announcement could spell bad news for the local 139th Airlift Wing of the Missouri Air National Guard. The 139th hosts a fleet of C-130H planes at its base at Rosecrans Airport. The release said, “A total of eight C-130J aircraft will be used to recapitalize the aging C-130H fleet, where older C-130H models will be fleet managed out of service and replaced by C-130H models from converting units.”

It’s unclear what impact this move will have on the 139th. Last July, Gov. Mike Kehoe approved $7.5 million to design a new aircraft maintenance hangar and $2 million to relocate the fuel farm facility at Rosecrans.

Both projects were hoped to enhance the 139th’s chances of receiving the newer C-130J models.

In addition, the Air Force announced that 19 “excess” manpower positions “due to this shift will be repurposed through the Air National Guard corporate process.”

The Air Force said the first fleet of eight C-130J aircraft will arrive at the Wyoming Air National Guard base in Cheyenne in early 2028.

Attempts to reach Missouri’s 6th District Congressman Sam Graves and Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt were unsuccessful. Graves is a member of the House’s Arm Services Committee while Schmitt serves on the same committee in the Senate.

Samaritan hosting ‘Taco ’bout it’ walk/5k

Patrick Holleron

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — To encourage mental health discussions, the Samaritan Counseling Center held it’s “taco ’bout mental health” walk and 5k at the Bode Ice Arena.

“It’s amazing what they do for our community,” 5k runner Matthew Payden said. “Community outreach is such a significant thing for us. But what they do specifically, how they help people, and money not being in the equation is huge. It’s just simply how they can serve our community. And the people that need it the most is what impresses me about what they do. It’s a worthy cause for us to be here today.”

This years run was geared toward providing awareness to substance use recovery. Among counties in Missouri, Buchannan County is in the top ten highest for opioid overdoses.

Speakers were present to provide information on Narcan and ways for people to get involved in helping reduce opioid overdoses.

Tacos were also provided for participants of the walk and 5k.

The event saw 143 people registered to participate, with a 75% turnout. The 5k raised roughly $8,000 in donations.
